WelcomeWe are delighted to share our autumn 2013 season with you.
The season opens with two co-productions. A Passionate Woman, written and directed by Kay Mellor and starring Lynda Bellingham in the Lyceum Theatre, and in the Studio, a collaboration between Sheffield Theatres and HighTide Festival Theatre on a major new production of Stuart: A Life Backwards. In the Crucible, we open with this year’s Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale, which will be directed by our Associate Director, Paul Miller (Hamlet).
At Christmas, the Lyceum Theatre welcomes Damian Williams back alongside Ian H Watkins (Steps) in Jack and the Beanstalk; tutti frutti will return to the Studio Theatre with the delightful The Boy Who Cried Wolf and, in the Crucible, we will stage a new production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver!, featuring 60 wonderfully talented local young people alongside 22 professional actors and 15 musicians.

We hope to welcome you through our doors this season. As ever, we would also love to know what you think about Sheffield Theatres. Do email us at [email protected] or tweet @crucibletheatre or @sheffieldlyceum

My Theatre Matters!Sheffield Theatres is supporting My Theatre Matters!, the Theatrical Management Association’s major national campaign that invites audiences to shout about how important their local theatre is to them.
Over the past few years, we have suffered some major cuts to our funding. In the midst of financial hardship, we’re very proud that the people of this city and region come together to be moved by the shows on our stages and that they continue to value and support our work with such generosity.
With the prospect of further changes to our financial landscape, we need your help to ensure that our local councillors know how much you value your theatre and its role in the community. We want you to tell them why you visit the Crucible, Lyceum and Studio theatres; how much you enjoyed the last workshop you took part in, and what a difference we make to the city of Sheffield.
Actors including Matthew Kelly and Siân Phillips, seen recently on stage here, are supporting the campaign too, as are the actors union Equity, Bectu and The Stage newspaper, plus lots of other venues across the country.
Now is your chance to influence the decision makers the next time they are making choices about funding.
Join the campaign by filling in a postcard on your next visit to Sheffield Theatres and returning it to a member of staff, or visit www.mytheatrematters.com and find other ways to get your voice heard.
You can also follow the campaign on Twitter @theatre_matters or Facebook at www.facebook.com/mytheatrematters

It’s the morning of Betty’s son’s wedding and she decides to go up into the attic to dust.
Surrounded by clutter, memories and ghosts from her past, Betty finds herself torn between the three men in her life – a husband she’s never really loved, a son she’s about to lose and a man she had a passionate affair with over thirty years ago. Desperate to escape it all, there’s only one place to go and that’s…up.
Most recently, Lynda Bellingham created the role of Chris in Calendar Girls playing to sold out houses in the West End and across the country. A Passionate Woman reunites her with Christopher Timothy for the first time since 1990 when they starred as James and Helen Herriot in the BBC’s All Creatures Great and Small. Multi-award winning Polish film star Mateusz Damiecki and Peter McMillan complete the cast.
This first ever major revival of Kay Mellor’s glorious comedy opens in Sheffield before transferring to the West End. See it here first!

Double BAFTA award-winner Jack Thorne’s new play tells the story of an unlikely friendship and of Stuart’s entire life – told backwards by Alexander.

Maureen Lipman
Haunting, funny, poignant and full of mystery, Daytona is a play with not one but two love stories at its heart.
Happy in their shared passion for ballroom dancing, Joe and Elli plan to win the next big competition. But the unexpected arrival of a figure from their past threatens to throw everything off balance. What can this man possibly want of them on this cold winter’s night? What can be gained from this uneasy reunion?
When they discover the story behind his sudden return, Joe and Elli must confront a profound moral dilemma.

The Ugly Sisters
Sat 5 October 7.45pm
Once upon a time there was us - Ruby and us.
Ruby was our mum. She had to work a lot. We played in the burnt out car round the back. We could do anything- except play with the needles.
Then everything changed, and there were bright lights and loud noises and flashing cameras. And there was her, and she was different. Everyone loved her.
Whoever holds the pen writes the story.
Thumping drums, clanging keys and violent voices, RashDash tell the real story of Cinderella - a sinister and sensuous cabaret.

BeatsBy Kieran Hurley
Wed 4 December 7.45pm
Beats tells the story of Johnno McCreadie, a teenager living in a small suburban Scottish town at the time of the 1994 Criminal Justice Act – a new piece of legislation which effectively outlawed raves, or ‘public gatherings around amplified music characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats’.
Beats is a coming-of-age story exploring rebellion, apathy and the irresistible power of gathered youth. With techno. Lots of techno.
Following sell-out runs at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre and London’s Bush and Soho theatres, Kieran Hurley’s Beats, breaks out on tour.
‘A tremendous piece of storytelling that takes us back to 1994’ ★★★★ The Guardian

Cried WOLF!
A beautiful new wintery tale about a boy who, unable to find delight in what is around him, seeks adventure, excitement and the thrill of the unknown!

Brassed OffAdapted by Paul AllenBased on the Screenplay by Mark HermanDirected by Damian Cruden
Wed 7 – Sat 10 May
It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, band-leader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distant dream. But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse.
Featuring rousing live music including Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Jerusalem, Brassed Off is a funny and heart-warming drama that reaches stirring heights as a local brass band performs the final scene, set in the Royal Albert Hall, live on the stage of the Lyceum Theatre.

FOOD & DRINKComplete your visit to the theatre with a drink at one of our bars and a delicious meal
Café CrucibleAt the hub of Sheffield Theatres, our Cafe offers a variety of freshly made sandwiches, Panini, salads, cakes and hot food daily.
A great place to sit and relax with friends or colleagues or to simply watch the world go by, our friendly service and reasonable prices are a great reason to pop in and say hello.

Crucible CornerA favourite of patrons, cast and crew, Crucible Corner offers a superb view of the theatres and Tudor Square. With its open fronted setting and spacious outdoor seating area, it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the summer days.
Choose a freshly prepared dish from our new a la carte menu of light bites, main meals and weekly specials complemented by a wide variety of wines, real ales, draught and hot drinks to enjoy as you soak up the sun.
If you are visiting the theatre enjoying a show, join us at Crucible Corner afterwards to receive 10% off your drinks simply by showing your ticket- you never know who you’ll see!
We can’t wait to see you on your next visit.
The opening of Cafe Crucible has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Foyle Foundation.
