Welcome We are delighted to present a Spring series packed with wonderful concerts and events for music-lovers of all ages. The programme reflects the great range of music we embrace, from the small, intensely intimate works that afford a deeply profound listening experience in the Crucible Theatre Studio, to the exuberant and dynamic pieces that feature in programmes for all the family when we take over the Crucible’s main stage for the whole day on 24th January, including a ‘Pay What You Want’ concert to which we encourage you to bring as many friends and family members as you like.

We are thrilled that we will be joined for recitals by internationally renowned pianist Melvyn Tan, La Serenissima – with the beautiful surroundings of St Marie’s Cathedral to complement their glorious Venetian Baroque programme – and the Benyounes Quartet, who are participating in our Exploring Haydn festival. The events packed into this weekend offer a great platform for Ensemble 360 and guest speakers to illustrate the many and varied reasons why Haydn is often considered to have been the most progressive and influential composer of all.

With this Spring series, we reach the final concerts of both Tim Horton’s and the Elias String Quartet’s wonderful complete cycles of Beethoven’s piano sonatas and string quartets. But please do not despair – we have an exciting ‘plan of succession’ in place with concerts that will launch a compelling new series commencing in the Autumn!

Monday 16 – Wednesday 18 February String ProjectSheffield Music Hub leads holiday courses three times a year for musicians aged 5-18 from across South Yorkshire. Our collaboration with the Hub continues this year as we work with the Maxwell String Quartet to coach, rehearse and perform alongside 250 young string players on the half-term course. The Maxwell Quartet, comprising four Scottish musicians who met at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2010, see education as a vital part of their music-making and run an extensive programme of workshops, lecture-recitals, and other work. Wednesday 25 March PowerPlus This unique, ground-breaking composition project, run in partnership with Sheffield Music Hub, is led by members of Ensemble 360 and Robin McEwan. It offers GCSE composition students the chance to develop, workshop, and record their pieces in a professional environment. Through this project, Ensemble 360 gives over 140 world premieres each year! On 25 March, students from schools from across Sheffield come together with Robin, Ensemble 360, and sound engineer Shaun Trotter for a day-long recording session.

Robin McEwan won an award for PowerPlus in the School, Care and Voluntary Community category of Sheffield City Council’s Celebration of Success Awards in 2009.

The Elias String Quartet presents the final two instalments of their compelling and dramatic presentation of the complete Beethoven string quartets. At the heart of each concert lies one of the masterly Razumovsky quartets, works which, as one writer said, “catapulted the quartet genre into the new revolutionary domain…with the Third Symphony, the Appassionata Sonata and the opera Leonore.” Musicians of the day reacted angrily to the quartets, complaining that they “were not music” and that the scores were a waste of money. Beethoven responded with the words: “They are not for you; they are for a later age.”

“A final thought. Regardless of whether Beethoven intended Op.135 to be his final statement or not, I find it hard to see it as anything other than profound. It gives an impression of being between this life and the next and what better way to go than with a bang?”

Friday 16 January, 7.30pm Crucible Theatre, StudioJohn Taylor’s New Group The collaboration between Diana Torto and John Taylor, born ten years ago, has gradually developed to a perfect balance where the blend of both artists and music is beautifully defined. The invitation to extend the duo to a trio, asking leading British saxophonist Julian Siegel to join them in a new band, was made naturally by John after a few recent concerts together. The main feature of their music-making is the incredibly sensitive and responsive interplay where each single nuance creates a new episode in their musical kaleidoscope. The repertoire is based on John Taylor’s arrangements of Paul McCartney songs, together with his own compositions and those of other contemporary composers.

Melvyn is a regular performer at the finest concert halls around the world and at festivals such as Salzburg and Edinburgh. Reviews unanimously acknowledge his scintillating virtuosity, yet they also praise his exquisitely balanced clarity and lyricism, and his refinement and grace.

Exploring HaydnFESTIVAL WEEKENDFriday 27 February to Sunday 1 March

If ever a composer warranted being the focus of a festival weekend it is Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). His place is assured in music textbooks as the man who stood at the crossroads of the transition from Baroque to Classical and from Classical to Romantic music. Yet it is only through hearing his music that the sheer genius of his invention, his powerful mastery of drama, and the boundless humour and imagination of his music can be fully appreciated. Ensemble 360 and the Benyounes Quartet present a wonderfully varied selection of his chamber music, including performances of all the monumental Opus 76 string quartets. We are also delighted to welcome Professors Julian Horton and David Wyn Jones who will shed further light on one of the most strikingly original composers of all time.

HEAR THE COMPLETE OPUS 76 STRING QUARTETS IN ONE WEEKENDCommentators have not shied away from using highly emotive language in declaring that Haydn’s final set of string quartets – the six that comprise Opus 76 – were the pinnacle of his writing in that genre. Descriptions such as “the harvest”, “Excelsior”, and “songs of experience… in which Haydn’s creative life reaches its fulfilment” abound. We are delighted that the festival weekend allows us the luxury of programming the complete set of quartets in close proximity. Friday 27 February, 1.30pmCrucible Theatre, StudioBenyounes QuartetMeet the Composer: HaydnSchools’ Concert (Key Stage 2)This concert explores the life and music of ‘Papa’ Haydn, often known as “the father of the string quartet”. Using extracts from quartets including Nos. 20, 33, and 54, the Benyounes Quartet bring pupils and their teachers a bit closer to the many aspects of Haydn’s character – his wit and humour, his warmth, his love of dance. The musicians encourage active listening and provoke imaginative creative responses to the music through interactive activities.

Haydn’s music expresses his great zest for life, and the participatory elements of this concert are fun and engaging, aiming to develop an awareness and understanding of rhythm, tempo, contrasts, ensemble skills, character and mood. An ideal way for young people to experience this wonderful music in an engaging and intimate setting.

The Benyounes Quartet’s evening recital features four wonderful quartets. Commentators have identified an affinity with Mozart in the Opus 50 set and an ‘anticipation’ of Beethoven in the Opus 54 pieces, yet the brilliance of the writing and the emotional and intellectual range expressed in both quartets stand as testimony to a composer at the height of his creative powers.

Prize-winners at the 2012 1st International Sandor Vegh (Budapest) and 2014 Orlando International (Holland) String Quartet Competitions, the Benyounes Quartet have already performed at Wigmore Hall, St Martin in the Fields, LSO St Luke’s, Vienna Konzerthaus, Gstaad New Year Festival and with Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company.

Saturday 28 February, 3.00pmCrucible Theatre, StudioSymposium: (Re)Discovering HaydnWe are delighted to present a 75-minute symposium examining why Haydn is revered by musicians as the fountain-head of so many ideas and innovations. Professors David Wyn Jones and Simon Keefe will examine the ‘Age of Haydn’ and the relationship and interaction between Haydn and Mozart.

DAVID WYN JONES is Professor of Music at Cardiff University. He has published numerous books and articles on Haydn and was recently awarded a Major Research Fellowship by the Leverhulme Trust to produce a new study of the history of music in Vienna.

SIMON KEEFE is J. R. Hoyle Chair of Music at the University of Sheffield and is especially renowned for his award-winning publications on Mozart, including a recent study of the Requiem (Cambridge University Press, 2012).

Saturday 28 February 10.15am and 11.30am Family-Friendly Backstage Tour Explore the home of Music in the Round as we go behind the scenes at the Crucible Theatre. This 50-minute tour gives you a glimpse into the world that lies beyond Stage Door, the spaces that our musicians inhabit as they prepare to play. Engagingly led by Sheffield Theatres’ Learning team, we’ll discover the dressing rooms, roam the rehearsal space, learn about lighting, and see the Studio from a very unusual angle! And along the way we’ll take a sneak peek at Ensemble 360 rehearsing for the rest of the Festival Weekend’s concerts.

The tour is suitable for ages 5+ and lasts 50 minutes. Numbers are limited so book early. Please meet at the Box Office at least five minutes before your tour is due to begin.

In this 50-minute lecture-recital, Ensemble 360’s string quartet and Professor Julian Horton examine one of Haydn’s most sublime creations, the Emperor quartet. We were treated last year to Julian’s brilliantly clear and illuminating analysis of Schubert’s music and he now turns his attention to Haydn to reveal how the composer plays with emotions on direct and subliminal levels.

JULIAN HORTON is Professor of Music at Durham University. Research interests include the analysis and reception of 19th-century instrumental music and the theory of tonality.

Haydn’s piano trios can be regarded as a demonstration of what chamber music, at its most fundamental level, is about. This is repertoire that was composed for use in domestic situations rather than public performance, though it makes no concessions with the technical demands that are set for the pianist in particular. The charming Divertimento in E flat was written for a horn player in Count Esterhazy’s orchestra in 1767 and, though short, calls for considerable stamina with a relentlessly high-lying part. The Sunrise quartet owes its name to the image evoked by the initial rising theme accompanied by sustained chords.

On one of Haydn’s trips to London, publicists mischievously attempted to manufacture a rivalry between Haydn and Ignace Pleyel, composer, publisher and piano-maker. In fact, the two men – one-time master and pupil – admired and respected each other and Pleyel’s deliciously fresh and spirited Opus 2 string quartets were dedicated to Haydn.

Haydn’s Symphony No.86 (one of three ‘Paris’ symphonies), in its string quartet version, is prefaced by a short talk by Professor David Wyn Jones that outlines the fascinating detective work he has undertaken over many years to uncover conclusive evidence that the arrangement was made by the great master himself.

Haydn’s enchanting piano trios stand out in comparison with those of his contemporaries, not only for their freshness and zest, but because they are conceived with an unusual emphasis on the role of the piano that requires sensitive accommodation from the string players. This concert also keeps the music in the family, as Ensemble 360 play an engaging horn trio written by Joseph’s younger Salzburg-based brother Michael, a composer of exceptionally fine sacred music, tutor to Weber and Diabelli, and a demonstrable influence on Mozart.

In the concluding concert of the Haydn festival weekend, Ensemble 360 present the two remaining quartets of the Opus 76 collection together with two other captivating pieces, both of which were written for the pianist Therese Jansen, whom Haydn had met on both his visits to London. Jansen did not pursue a career as a solo performer – an undertaking that would have been fraught with challenges for a woman in the 1790s – but she was recognised as one of Clementi’s best pupils and a renowned teacher in her own right.

Be transported to Venice for a concert featuring the music of the great master Antonio Vivaldi and one of the great violin virtuosi of that generation, Johann Georg Pisendel (1687-1755). The programme brings together six incredible sonatas: two fabulous works by Vivaldi and one by Albinoni which are dedicated to Pisendel, a piece by Montanari which survives in Pisendel’s own hand, and two effervescent works by Pisendel himself.

La Serenissima, led by the brilliant violinist Adrian Chandler, is one of the UK’s leading historical performance ensembles specialising in the work of Vivaldi and his contemporaries. They have carved themselves an enviable position in the UK’s early music scene: in 2010 they won a Gramophone award for their recording, The French Connection, and two years later their disc Venice by Night reached the top 10 of the UK classical charts.

Wednesday 1 April, 7.15pmCrucible Theatre, StudioAn Evening with pianist Tim Horton ‘Exploring the Beethoven piano sonatas’Everyone who has heard even a single performance of Tim Horton’s grand project to play the complete cycle of Beethoven piano sonatas will have been transfixed by the outstanding musicianship and technical bravura of this remarkable Sheffield-based performer. In conversation with writer and broadcaster Paul Allen and with a liberal sprinkling of musical examples, Tim will discuss and answer audience questions about the demands of playing this extraordinary music and the personal impact that comes from total immersion with these masterpieces.

This special evening comes one week before the final recital in Tim’s complete cycle.

This event will last approx. 75 minutes with no interval.

Tim Horton reaches the final performance in his monumental series presenting the complete Beethoven piano sonatas and plays three sonatas written in a period between 1820 and 1822. Fully deaf by this stage of his life, Beethoven nevertheless unleashes a rich array of new ideas that make extensive and innovative demands on musicianship and keyboard & pedal technique. Each sonata has its own distinct character, yet all of them mark a significant development of the form even from the strikingly original works of his middle period.

Thursday 9 April, 7.30pm Crucible Theatre, StudioMarius Neset QuintetThe young Norwegian saxophonist and composer Marius Neset has made a huge impact. His 2013 album Birds was hailed a masterpiece, and the young Norwegian has since been touted as the heir to Jan Garbarek’s mantle.

His amazing technical prowess, paired with profound expression, is supported by an all-star Anglo-Scandinavian band including British vibes wizard Jim Hart. The group will be featuring music from Marius’s newest album, bringing together his world of influences with remarkable energy, creativity and, most of all, his highly original sound.

Bridge Young Quartet SchemeJanuary 2015 sees the start of our three-year Bridge scheme, offering a young string quartet the chance to be mentored by Peter Cropper and Music in the Round. The quartet has now been chosen, and we will keep you informed of their progress and of opportunities to hear them play here and around the country.

We are delighted that the Festival will include Ensemble 360 giving the world première of a new work by the brilliant young American composer Elizabeth Ogonek, commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society.

Re-Sales If the event is sold out Sheffield Theatres will endeavour to re-sell your tickets on your behalf at a charge of £2.00 per ticket.

Booking Fees A transaction fee of £1.50 (£1.00 online) applies to all bookings (excluding cash) for events at the Crucible Theatre and Studio. The fee remains the same irrespective of the number of tickets you purchase.

Any bookings that include events at Upper Chapel or St Marie’s Cathedral are instead subject to an alternative transaction fee of 10%, which is applied only to tickets for events not held at the Crucible and is instead of the £1.50 (£1.00 online) fee outlined above.
