“Peace comes from trust.”

Dear friends,

How often do we act like Martha – “anxious and worried about many things” (Luke10:41)? Fear, anxiety, and stress really get in the way of receiving the peace of God in our lives. Mary chose the better part, not by getting out of work, but by bringing everything to

the feet of Jesus and listening to him.

Occasionally I hear from someone that they pray for others but not for themselves. This is a terrible mistake! While it’s true that we should not pray for things in our lives in a selfish way, we are called to pray out of our relationship with the Lord. We need to unburden our hearts to the Lord, to talk to him about our anxieties, our worries, to let him know we are stressed or tired, and ask his help. Whether we are happy or sad, angry, stressed, bored... whatever it is... God cares and wants to help us in our burdens. We grow in a true friendship with the Lord, when we begin to trust him, to trust him with all our cares and worries, and entrust our hearts to him. When we trust in the Lord, we can find rest, comfort, and freedom in him. A simple phrase sums it

up: “peace comes from trust.”

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ

Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Your brother in Christ,

Father Josh

"La paz viene de la confianza."

Queridos amigos,

(Filipenses

4: 6-7).

Padre Josué

This Lenten season, Catholic Relief Services invites Catholics to pray with their families and faith communities; fast in solidarity with those who hunger; learn about our global community and the challenges of poverty around the world; and give sacrificial contributions to those in need. Seventy-five percent of Rice Bowl proceeds go to Catholic Relief Services and help fund development projects designed to increase food security in commu-nities in over 40 countries around the world. Twenty-five percent of Operation Rice Bowl contributions remain in the dioceses to affirm the importance of our global responsibility as Christians to assist those in need both around the corner and around the world. Rice bowls will be available to all parishioners on Ash Wednesday.

Easter Flowers As in previous years, the parish will offer the opportunity to purchase Easter flowers ($10 each) for the

altar at Easter, in memory/in honor of loved ones, friends and family. Names of the donors and honor-

ees/memorial will be printed in the Easter Sunday bulletin. Order forms are available at all church en-

trances.

Lent has started. How are you doing with your Lenten resolutions? If you aren’t doing very well, you can always start over. God is a God of mercy. The following children made their 1st Reconciliation on Feb. 20, 2016: Eloy Carvajal, Georgia & Tessa Castle, Pamela Dailey, Gloria Elebeke, Xander Estupin, Paul Jon Haslauer, Chioma Blessing Onuchukwu, Madalynn Santiago, Mikaela Santiago, Mi-chael Spencer-Cole, and Czarlotte Torino. This year we celebrated this special Sac-rament with our Hispanic 2nd grade classes for a total of 52. Wow, this was exciting! Parents, don’t forget this was just their first time for Reconciliation. Please take them again and again so they will learn they can go as often as they need or want to. This is the season for so many blessings to come. We have children preparing for their 1st Communion and we have four young adults coming into the Church this Easter and even more young people preparing for Confirmation in May. May God bless you all during this Lent and Easter Season. Margaret

SEDER MEAL

Palm Sunday, March 20th - 4:00 p.m. Good Counsel Gym

“Seder Meal”? What is that? – The “Seder” meal is the traditional Passover Meal that has been celebrated by our Jewish brothers and sisters for thousands of years, ever since the first Passover that delivered God’s people from slavery in Egypt. It was celebrated by Jesus and His apostles at the Last Supper in Jerusalem, and is still celebrated around the world today. What does it involve? – Through an ordered sequence of stories, dialogue, songs, ritual foods and drink, the story of God’s deliverance of His people is told. Then a full meal is enjoyed together, celebrating God’s gift of food and fellowship! Why now, at Good Counsel? – The Seder Meal is a wonderful way to begin Holy Week, by recalling the Jewish roots of our faith. We can better understand the connection between the Passover Jesus celebrated in the Upper Room, with His Passion on the Cross, and the faith that we share today at every Mass. What should I bring? –

Please bring your favorite potluck dish to share for the meal! (side dish, salad, dessert…) The parish will provide lamb and chicken, as well as all the needed ritual foods (matzah, horseradish, parsley, wine and grape juice, etc.). And…please bring a reverent and prayerful spirit as we move through the evening! How can I help? – GLAD YOU ASKED! Many hands will be needed to assist with setting up, serving and clean-up, of course! Special care must be taken in preparing for the Seder, so all volunteers are welcome on Saturday, March 19th, starting at noon in the gym. Should I sign up to attend? Who should attend? – Please sign up on the list in the vestibule, or call the church office, to help us know how much meat to prepare. Please feel free to invite guests from other parishes or other faiths to join us! Children are welcome, though very young kids may get restless during the quieter portion of the ritual.

Maria Luna

Hispanic Ministry

From Maria Luna’s desk, Since I started coming to Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, I have received many blessings, and I can see the wonders of the Lord. As you know the Hispanic Community just began six months ago in this church, and thanks to the Lord, in a short time it has come a long way. The number of parishioners has grown every day, and I am very grateful to the Lord for giving me the opportunity to meet Father Josh. And I thank you infinitely, Father Josh, for giving me the

opportunity to work in this ministry. Also I can see the greatness of the Lord in the Hispanic community. They are a blessing for this parish. And they have supported all the activities we have developed. Without them and their willingness we could not do all the activities that took place during the month of December. I could see the enthusiasm and participation of children and adults during the Novena to the Virgin of Guadalupe, which began on December 3rd and ended with the beautiful celebration of the Virgin. Four days later the traditional posadas began, where all participants were gathered in different places to ask for the posada and pray the Rosary.

Then the bags with candies were distributed, and the children broke the piñatas full of candy. At the end the owner of the house provided a delicious dish to please our palate. All shared in the happiness and joy that we experienced during the days of the posadas. That’s where I saw the Lord’s presence, because we all were very willing to do great things together, which we alone cannot do. As it is the Lord who does great things and we as humans can only do the smallest, the minimum. So praise, bless and give thanks to God the Father, for his great love and mercy that endures forever, because his loyalty is eternal and there is no one in this world like Him. “Great is his faithfulness” so we need to bless Him and praise Him forever. Trust in the Lord, He loves us.

“Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.” This semester’s focus has been on this great St. Catherine of Siena quote. Our first group of year 2 Confirmation teens are preparing to receive this sacrament in May and their hearts are totally and completely on fire for God! Through Confirmation, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and receive the strength to witness to God’s love and mercy in the world. We feel that each teen will be great soldiers for Christ. Please continue to pray for our Confirmandi as they complete this journey, and for our Year 1 class as they grow closer to confirmation as well. This summer, we will be attending the Steubenville Summer Conference again. This time we will be attending the conference in Dallas, TX. Two years ago, we took 2 teens. This summer, we will be taking 16 teens!! It is a testament to the power that Jesus has in the lives our young people. The reason we love taking our teens to the Steubenville Conference is because the focus is on building and growing a relationship with Christ: in the Eucharist, through Adoration and through healing in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is always such an incredible sight to see thousands of teens worshiping God together and then to see them line up by the hundreds in line for confession. Please continue to pray for our young people who are so hungry for Jesus, hungry for the “truth that will set them free” (John 8:32). Pray that their hearts will be so in love with our Lord that they truly will set hearts on fire for God’s love. In Christ, Nick & Kristin Ables

Question:

Why Do Roman Catholics Not Sing the Alleluia During Lent?

Throughout the liturgical year, the Catholic Church makes certain changes to the Mass to reflect the liturgical season. Next to the change in the color of the priest's vestments, the absence of the Alleluia during Lent is probably the most obvious.

Answer:

The Meaning of the Alleluia

The Alleluia comes to us from Hebrew, and it means "praise Yahweh." Traditionally, it has been seen as the chief term of praise of the choirs of angels, as they worship around the throne of God in Heaven. It is, therefore, a term of great joy, and our use of the Alleluia during Mass is a way of participating in the angels' worship. It is also a reminder that the Kingdom of Heaven is already established on earth, in the form of the Church, and that our participation in Mass is a participation in Heaven.

Our Lenten Exile

During Lent, however, our focus is on the Kingdom coming, not on the Kingdom having come. The readings in the Masses for Lent and in the Liturgy of the Hours focus heavily on the spiritual journey of Old Testament Israel toward the coming of Christ, and the salvation of mankind in His death and resurrection.

The Return of the Alleluia at Easter

That day come triumphantly on Easter Sunday—or, rather, at the Easter Vigil, on Holy Saturday night, when the priest chants a triple Alleluia before he reads the Gospel, and everyone present responds with a triple Alleluia. The Lord is risen; the Kingdom has come; our joy is complete; and, in concert with the angels and saints, we greet the risen Lord with shouts of "Alleluia!"

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS O Jesus, I pray for Your faithful and fervent priests, for Your unfaithful and tepid priests; for Your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for Your tempted priests; for Your lonely and desolate priests; for Your young priests; for Your dying priests; for the souls of Your priests in purgatory. But above all, I recommend to You the priests dearest to me; the priest who baptized me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way. O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.

Our Lady o f Good Counse l

Our Lenten journey of repentance and conversion

reaches the holy city of Jerusalem, celebrated on

Palm Sunday. Now we travel with the Lord Jesus

through the gates of the city in which he will be

betrayed, arrested, tried, tortured, and suffer

capital punishment. This holiest of weeks beckons

us to enter the Paschal Mystery once again. Let us

enter this week with hearts willing to be

transformed again by a paschal love that has the

power to lift us from the grave of sin and into the

light and life that come only from God.
