Welcome!!! Sylvia “Sylvie” Artiles, ECHO apprentice

from the University of Notre Dame.

ECHO is a two year service, learning, and lay ministry formation program through Notre Dame’s Institute for Church Life

designed for young men and women interested in exploring catechetical ministry while doing concurrent graduate theological study. Apprentices are paired with a parish catechetical mentor, who in conjunction with the pastor, staff, and parish community will provide a valuable hands-on leadership experience and opportunity to learn the art and profession of parish catechetical ministry. Four dioceses in the United States will host a total of 12 apprentices, of which four will call the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston home. Sylvie arrived at our parish on August 23rd to begin a 2-year apprenticeship under the mentorship of Cheryl Scott. She will be a full time staff member here at Most Holy Trinity, which will be her learning community for the next two years. Sylvie’s family originated in Cuba, settled in Kansas where she grew up. Her family eventually made their way to Dallas, where Sylvia graduated with a BA in Theology from the University of Dallas in 2008. She has worked in Campus Ministry in the Diocese of Beaumont, and performed inner city missionary work in Washington, DC and Kansas City, MO. She is excited to be given the opportunity to work at Most Holy Trinity and looks forward to meeting everyone here and becoming part of our parish family. Sylvie and the three other apprentices will be living in a common house in the Pearland area. As anyone knows who moves into a new home, there is lots of expense to set up house. If you would like to offer a simple, small but big Angleton welcome to Sylvia and the other apprentices, (such as a gift card, gas card, etc.) contact Cheryl at the parish office.

¡Wow! ¡Es tan bueno estar de regreso en la parroquia y estar escribiendo esto desde mi oficina! También fue bueno estar de nuevo celebrando con ustedes este fin de semana pasado. ¡Es bueno estar en casa! Tenemos dos personas que necesitan ser presentadas a la parroquia: El Padre Sean Garrity, CSB, y Sylvia Artiles. Algunos de ustedes ya conocieron al Padre Sean, durante su estancia en Cameron House la primavera pasada, como parte de su sabático. Ahora ya ha sido oficialmente asignado a los Padres Basilianos en Cameron House, y estará ministrando tanto en el Sagrado Corazón en Manvel como aquí en la Santísima Trinidad. El estará aquí con frecuencia los lunes y

Wow! It is so good to be back at the parish and to be writing this from my office! It was also good to be back celebrating with you this past weekend. It’s nice to be home! We have two people that need to be introduced to the parish: Fr. Sean Garrity, CSB, and Sylvia Artiles. Some of you already met Fr. Sean, during his stay at Cameron House last spring as part of his sabbatical. He has now been officially appointed to the Basilian Fathers at Cameron House, and will be doing ministry at both Sacred Heart in Manvel and here at Most Holy Trinity. He will often be around on Mondays and Wednesdays for those who would like to make an appointment to visit with him. I am so thankful to have his gentle presence and his willingness to serve. And Sylvia has arrived as our new ECHO apprentice. Many of you will remember Kristi, who was with us as part of the Notre Dame’s ECHO program. We are now blessed to have Sylvia Artiles for these upcoming two years. Please give her a warm Angleton welcome! Although she grew up in Kansas, her parents now live in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, so she is no stranger to Texas! We now have air conditioning once again in Heyck Hall, so we can finally get the ceiling repaired in the kitchen there! With the new installation by parishioner Charles Kaspar, we should be able to save considerable energy compared to what we had before. And, I would like to congratulate Deacon Luis Hernández, who complemented his diaconate studies by taking a six week course to become a Case Sponsor for Nullity requests. Thank you for your hard work and dedication! Finally, I wish each and every one of you a happy Labor Day holiday. May each of us be always mindful of the dignity of human work.

Gospel Reflection for Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2012

¿Recuerdan haber oído esto cuando eran niños, “lávate las manos antes de comer.”?

Las manos de los niños se ensucian después de jugar y lavarlas es cuestión de higiene. El lavado de manos que se encuentra en el evangelio de hoy no es sobre higiene exterior sino más bien sobre la pureza interior. Cuando guardamos los preceptos de la iglesia es un acto externo que representa nuestra concordancia interna con Dios. Pero también debe haber un compromiso interno con Dios que va mucho más allá de lo exterior. Si el precepto se mantiene pero no hablamos y actuamos de acuerdo con el significado interno corremos el peligro de escuchar las palabras de Jesús en la lectura del Evangelio de hoy “Este pueblo me honra con los labios, pero su corazón está lejos de mí.” El propósito de “la ley” es para que nosotros centremos nuestros

corazones en Dios. El corazón humano es en donde los valores se inician y se concluyen. Jesús nos enseña que es en el corazón donde se encuentra la verdadera obediencia y conversión. La siguiente letra del himno de un escritor del siglo 21, Thomas Troeger, refleja maravillosamente el mensaje del evangelio de hoy.

Como un cáliz moldeado en oro, Pulido, brillante y rebozando en vino,

Hazme Señor, apto para contener, te imploro Gracia y verdad y amor divino.

Que comience mi alabanza y adoración Con la limpieza de mi corazón.

Cuando tu alabanza danzo o recito,

Cuando entono un himno o una canción, Cuando tus amorosos caminos predico,

Que su Amén añada mi corazón. Que cada preciado rito exterior

Así refleje tu luz interior.

Remember hearing this as a child, “Go wash your hands before you eat.”? Children’s hands are dirty after playing so washing them is a mater of hygiene. The washing found in today’s gospel story is not about outward hygiene rather it is about inner purity. When we keep the precepts of the church it is an external act that represents our internal conformity to God. But there must also be an inner commitment to God that goes far beyond the exterior. If the precept is kept but we do not speak and act according to the inner meaning we run the danger of hearing the words of Jesus in today’s gospel reading’ “This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” The purpose of “the law” is for us to center our hearts on God. The human heart is where values begin and end. Jesus teaches us that it is in the heart where true observance and conversion is found. The following hymn text by 21st century hymn writer Thomas Troeger wonderfully reflects the message of today’s gospel.

As a chalice cast in gold, Burnished bright and brimmed with wine,

Make me, Lord as fit to hold Grace and truth and love divine. Let my praise and worship start With the cleansing of my heart.

When I dance or chant your praise,

When I sing a song or hymn, When I preach your loving ways,

Let my heart add its Amen. Let each cherished, outward rite Thus reflect your inward light.

Baptisms: Preparations sessions are required for parents and godparents and a recognition Mass. Parents should be registered in the parish and practicing Catholics. Call the parish office as early as possible during pregnancy to pre-register for classes. Baptism will be set upon completion of the required classes.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): For individuals who are not baptized, baptized in another denomination and interested in becoming Catholic, or baptized Catholics who never completed the sacraments of initiation (Eucharist & Confirmation). This process leads to full communion in the Catholic Church.

First Reconciliation/First Communion: Enrollment in the sacrament preparation process is open to children in grade 2 or older who are registered in the parish, faithfully attending Mass and enrolled in ongoing faith formation programming. Classes include required parent & child sessions for both sacraments.

Confirmation: Enrollment in a 2-year preparation process is open to youth in grade 10 or higher who actively practice the Catholic faith and are registered in the parish. Youth must be regularly attending Mass and ongoing faith formation classes. An entrance interview may be required.

Marriage: By appointment only, 6-12 months in advance. Either one or both of the couple must be registered in the parish. Marriage Preparation Program required. No weddings during Lent.

Holy Orders: If interested in the Priesthood or Diaconate, contact Fr. Maurice Restivo, C.S.B.

Death in the Family: Call the Parish Office before you make an appointment with the funeral home. We are here to help you spiritually and emotionally.

Llamen a la oficina parro-quial tan pronto como sea posible durante el embarazo para pre-registrarse para las clases. La fecha del bautismo se establecerá después de haber comple-tado las clases requeridas. RICA (Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos): Este proceso lleva a la plena comunión en la Iglesia Católica. Es para las personas que no están bauti-zadas, o que están bautizadas en otra religión y están interesadas en convertirse en católicos. También es para católicos bautizados que no han recibido los sacramentos de iniciación (Eucaristía y Confirmación). Primera Reconciliación / Primera Comunión: La inscripción, para iniciar el proceso de preparación para este sacramento, está disponible a los niños desde el 2º año escolar en adelante, que están registrados en la parroquia, que están asistiendo fielmente a misa y que están inscritos en el Programa de For-mación de Fe en curso. Ambos sacramentos incluyen sesiones de preparación que son requeridas tanto para los niños como para los padres de familia. Confirmación: el proceso de preparación para este sacramento es de 2 años. La inscripción está disponible para los jóvenes del 10º año escolar en adelante, que practican activamente la fe católica y están registrados en la parroquia. Los jóvenes deben de estar asistiendo regularmente a Misa y a las clases de formación en la fe en curso. Una entrevista de admisión podría ser requerida. Matrimonio: Únicamente con cita previa de 6 a 12 meses de anticipación. Cuando menos uno de los dos novios debe estar registrado en la parroquia. Se requiere un Programa de Preparación para el Matrimonio. Durante la Cua-resma no se efectuaran bodas..
