Message from the Head of School

Dear SFS Community and Friends, I am pleased to present our Annual Report for the 2012-13 academic year. The year was marked by some outstanding achievements in Academics, the Arts and Athletics. But we are also pleased to report a high level of Service and Christian Ministry activity among our students. We were also deeply involved in planning for our future. The 2012-13 Board approved an exciting Campus Master Plan, which looks far into our future at SFS. As you’ll see in the pages that follow, our Seoul Foreign School has been blessed with a strong fiscal foundation, a financially supportive group of Alumni and friends and gifted students who performed well in the arenas of academics, athletics, fine arts and in Christian ministries. I hope the information in this Annual Report will be helpful in gaining a more complete understanding of the dynamics and profile of this very special school. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or comments. I am eager to respond to any questions or suggestions you might have. We appreciate your partnership through your prayers and giving. We are committed to being good stewards of your gifts as we facilitate the education of our future global leaders. Faithfully Yours,

John Engstrom Head of School

NORTHWEST EVALUATION ASSOCIATION (NWEA) MAP TESTING The NWEA MAP Test is designed to detect progress with our School students and is administered three times during the year. Each student is tested both for growth in reading, math and language and for proficiency in the same areas. These individual scores help teachers place students in appropriate achievement groups and detect progress or lack of progress compared with the previous test. * EARCOS: East Asia Regional Council of Schools

The IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) results at SFS are outstanding and reflect the hard work of our students and teachers involved in the IGCSE program. The experience of completing courses that are two-years in length followed by a set of external examinations, not only rewards the students with a qualification from the University of Cambridge, but also helps to prepare them for a program with a similar Structure; IB Diploma courses. A total of 420 individual IGCSE grades were awarded in May/June 2013; an increase from 282 grades in May/June 2012. 7 students achieved the International Certificate of Education, the group award for IGCSE: these students studied a full complement of IGCSE courses during their 9th and 10th grades at SFS.

SFS SAT Results

2011

SFS students continue to exceed the US National Average of combined SAT scores (Writing, Math and Critical Reading). The U.S. National Average for 2012 was 1498.

Our most recent data reflects SFS’s strong SAT scores. This is well above college-bound students in the US.

Standardized Assessment Tasks (SATs) and SOSCA

In the British School, a number of assessments are used to benchmark the students’ progress and reported on the Students’ Progress Reports during the year. There are no ‘passes’ or ‘fails’ in these assessments—they provide a ‘snapshot’ of each of our students at that point in their education.

During Key Stages 1-3 (Y1-Y9), progress in National Curriculum subjects is assessed against seven levels. At the end of Key Stage 2 (Y6), the level will reflect the child’s national test results in Maths and English. The UK average is Level 4; the majority of SFBS students are expected to achieve level 5.

Standardized Assessment Tasks (SATs) and SOSCA

At the end of Key Stage 3 (Y9), the level will be based on the teacher's assessment and the student’s SOSCA (an on-line version of SATs) test results. The UK average is Level 6; the majority of our children are expected to achieve level 7 in Science, Maths and English (Bands B and A).
