taxi rolls up, introducing mysterious new character to the scene without being able to see
his face. As well as this, rainy day is pathetic fallacy for disequilibrium
in the narrative.
Still unable to see face – building tension for who he is and points out something is ominous and imminently about to happen. High-angle shot shows him to powerful and meaningful to the plot.
Close-up on Brad Pitt’s character (Mills) shows shocked and confused facial
expressions as he finally sees the mysterious character the scenes been building to. Non-diegetic music begins playing as high-pitched strings getting
increasingly louder boost the intensity of the scene.
Finally reveals his face showing a bloodied costume in this medium shot of Kevin Spacey’s character (John Doe) ending the tension while also acting as an eyeline-match after Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are seen looking towards something then revealing it’s him.
Close-up shot on the man shows his confidence while another high-angle
shot of him, again, emphasises his power and control.
A long shot of many police officers pointing guns at John shows he is clearly thought of as being a great danger.
Close-up on John with diegetic dialogue “I’d like to speak to my
lawyer, please”. Implies John has a plan due to the sinister nature of his
voice and strange nature of his actions, appearing calm throughout.
