Annual Report : 1st April 2019 to 31st March 2020
We are pleased to present the annual report of Shabari
Seva Samiti for the year 2019-20. The work is successfully
being carried out by this organization in 12 tehsils of 7
districts. We support this work every year with new
initiatives. Along with the material development, we aim to
associate thought process with those programs. Our work is
progressing with the mutual belief between volunteers of the
organization, well-wishers and donors.
Ramnavami festival – Mr. Ashok Talekar Vice president of
our organization expired. So the Ramnavami was celebrated
in a simple manner at the residence of Smt. Kunda Nikam.
Barrage at Dhabadevipada – We decided to construct a
cement barrage at Dhabadevipada in Shirpur tehsil. The work
began in March 2019. The work was complete on 17 April
2019. The organization spent Rs 4.5 lakhs for this work. The
water and silt was allowed to flow away during the rainy
season. A gate was fixed to the barrage in October ’19. By
February 2020, the water was stored as far as 100 to 125
meters, at full capacity. Water level in the vicinity rose and
20-25 farmers have benefitted from this barrage.
Personality development camp for students, Kashele – A
personality development camp was organized at Kashele
during 15-17 April 2019. Thirty students from nearby 6
schools participated in the camp. The purpose was to educate
them about the novel educational programs. The schedule
was packed with scientific experiments, group songs and
paper craft, sports and brain games, sky gazing and acting in
drama. Students liked it very much and they insisted on
continuing for a week.
Environment growth – Shabari Seva Samiti decided to sow
seeds in all the villages where it has been serving. All our 40
volunteers got the students and the farmers involved in this
program. Various kinds of seeds were collected. It was sowed
on the farm boundaries, available space, open space around
the house and school. The seeds were of plants like jambhool,
mango, cashew, jackfruit, blackberry, karanj, lemon etc. Small
children, students and farmers participated eagerly. This
program was carried out through the month of June.
Particularly small children enjoyed the digging and sowing
work.
The children observed the progress thereafter. Stages
like budding out of the soil as tender red leaves and growing
further. This experiment of ‘nature study’ has reached the
students in many villages.
Environment protection (Delicate bonding with the plants) –
Rakshabandhan – This celebration highlights the mutual
caring relation between the siblings. On this day Shabari tied
thread (Rakhi) to the plants. The plants were worshiped and a
resolution was made to assist their growth and safeguard
them.
This year, Independence Day and Rakshabandhan
occurred on 15th August 2019. Shabari Seva Samiti celebrated
this day by flag hoisting in schools and tying rakhi to the
plants. The importance of Independence Day, environmental
growth and protection was explained to the students and
their parents.
Plantation of mango trees – In July and August this year,
5000 mango saplings were planted in the fields of farmers
residing in Talasari, Jawhar, Peth and Akkalkuva tehsils. We
have carried out this activity in Jawhar for the last 8 years.
Now the farmers are earning cash through the sale of
mangoes.
Talk with the volunteers – ‘तमाच्या तळाशी दिव ेलागल े रे’ This was the title of the program. On June 8 2019, this
program took place in Sahayog Mandir, central location in
Thane. Noted author Smt. Sampada Wagle interviewed 9
volunteers of the Shabari Seva Samiti. It was well responded
by the residents of Thane. The volunteers replied the
questions with confidence that showed their dedication in
the work. The interviews were interesting. Well known
economist Dr. Abhijit Phadnis was the chief guest. There were
more attendees than the venue could accommodate. The
first of its kind, this event by ‘Shabari’ proved to be a success.
Pustak-handi – Shabari Seva Samiti has been arranging
Pustak Handi past 13 years. This initiative offers the students
to fulfill the need to read other than academic books. This
year it was arranged in 24 schools in Shirpur, Dhadgaon,
Akkalkuva, Peth, Jawhar and Karjat tehsils. Children from
remote areas in Dhadgaon and Akkalkuva tehsils saw the
beautiful colored story books for the first time. They felt
joyous by looking at the pictures. They were happy to think of
possessing such a book. The children chewed the nuts, played
around, sang and danced and thus enjoyed the Pustak Handi’
event.
Construction work in schools – Many Zilla Parishad schools
face the shortage of classrooms. The organization had built a
big hall for the school in Hedavli. It also constructed toilet
blocks for the school in Kothimbe. During this year, our
organization helped the schools in Jamrukh (Karjat tehsil) and
Semlya (Shirpur tehsil) to construct halls. Many people
including Smt. Prabhatai Vaze, Smt. Vasrsha Talvelkar, Shri.
Dilip Patil helped the organizations with funds.
The organization provided monetary assistance to the
school in Tadvadi (Karjat tehsil) to do painting work. The
function arranged in this regard was graced by the presence
of the world renowned artist Shri. Parag Borse (Dahivali, Tal.
Karjat).
Worshiping the woman power –
During the Navratri festival,
‘Kanyapoojan’ (कन्यापूजन) was
arranged by our organization in 163
villages in 10 tehsils. To revive the
woman power and self-respect in all
the layers of the society was the
objective. It was backed with
enthusiasm. Many urban people participated in the program.
Girl student from 1st to 4th standards looked presentable.
They were adored and saluted by their parents and grand-
parents. Their parents expressed confidence in the girl. She is
the Goddess Lakshmi in our house; we shall respect her; care
for her; educate her and help her to become self-reliant. Girls
were elated to receive gifts from the people who came from
cities.
Training the volunteers – The volunteers of the Shabari Seva
Samiti assembled at the center in Kashele for 4 days, from 31-
10-19 to 03-11-19. Those who do field work come together;
share their experiences and resume their work with new
determination. There were 41 participants. Our volunteers
from cities around were also present. This is meant to be the
program for the residents in remote area hence traditional
dances became an inspiring theme every night.
Dialogue with the women from remote places – Shabari
Seva Samiti’s women volunteers staying in the urban area
took a novel approach. They visited women staying in the
forest areas in Dhadgaon and Akkalkuva. They travelled on
foot. The path they followed was a section of popularly
known ‘Narmda Parikrama’. There are many small habitats
and villages on the course from Dhadgaon to to Vadphali. Our
volunteers met the women staying there. The daily chores of
work done by women could be observed as the volunteers
resided there, had meals in their houses and chatted with
them. Strolling was not the only aim, but observing the rural
routine too was. The local women got an unusual experience
of their urban counterparts mixing with them. Assemblages
were held at many places where singing and question-answer
sessions were conducted. The ‘march and meet’ was
organized from 11 to 19 November 2019, covering Dhadgaon
to Vadphali and then to Shoolpaneshwar. Urban volunteers of
our organization gained broader views and feelings. Following
volunteers undertook the walkathon; Suvarna Nimkar,
Ranjana Karandikar, Kunda Nikam, Vinda Nimkar, Manju
Bhat, Nalini Athlye from Dombivali. Following women
participated in other events. With Preshita Admane , a girl
from Kalyan,Vaishari Phadnis from Nashik and Prajakta
Garware from Karjat making it a group of nine. Experience
gained by each of them would make us rethink.
Surya Namaskar competition – Surya Namaskar is an exercise
for the whole body. It has originated in India. Many Aasanas
are required to be performed in the act of Surya Namaskar.
This should be spread widely and specifically in rural places.
We have begun to provide training and conducting
competitions from last year. This year competitions were held
at the levels of village, residential colony, school and center.
Tehsil level competitions were organized in Palasner, Survani,
Molgi, Bardi and Jawhar . Winners were given cash prizes and
certificates. In 163 schools tis event was arranged. Girls
matched the count of Namaskars with boys, in some cases
surpassed them. Girls proved that ‘We are no lesser than
anyone’.
Temporary Barrages – Human, animals and plants need
water as an essential ingredient. The ground water level is
reducing constantly not only in Maharashtra but all over in
India. It becomes our national duty to stop the flow of water
from the rivers and streams, and allow it to percolate in the
ground. Shabari Seva Samiti has created this awareness
among the village residents. In the months of October,
November and December 47 barrages were constructed in
the tehsils of Jawhar, Akkalkuva, Dhadgaon, Shirpur and
Yawal. Villagers, women, students and teachers offered their
help in this work. The organization completed this by working
as a team. This would enable storing lakhs of liters of water in
the ground. Cattle and birds would also get more water. The
wells and bore-wells in the area will receive water from this
source. This is an attempt by us to transform positively.
Mass marriage – Persistence is maintained in the initiatives
by Shabari. The results prove it. Mass marriage ceremonies
are being held by our organization every year since 2006.
Rural families borrow money for the marriage and become
poorer under the burden to repay. This initiative helps them
perform marriage without borrowing. The couples also
receive utensils and clothes.
On 2nd February 2020, 52 couples wed in the single
ceremony in Aleevmal from Jawhar tehsil. On 1st March 2020,
48 couples got married d in Semlya from Shirpur tehsil.
Volunteers from Dombivli took lot of efforts for those two
mass marriage ceremonies. It is not possible to mention each
and everyone’s name. We received ample donations.
Particularly, Shri. Dilip Patil (Navi Mumbai), Shri.
Devakinandan Jindal, Shri. Rajesh Bajaj, Shri. Shantilal Kothari,
Msr. Paras Motors, Lioness Club of Khar, Smt. Seeta Gupta,
Smt. Sunita Sablok, Lions Club of Mumbai Bandra. Many
other donors help us every year. The ceremony at Semlya
was a success because our volunteer Vimal Pawra took the
lead in organizing it. At such a young age she performed well
and deserves the praise.
Mokas, place to stay for people in Narmada Paikrama –
Mokas is a place in Akkalkuva where people in Narmada
Parikrama stay in the house of Shri. Mogya Wasave. Shabari
Seva Samiti is erecting a permanent structure for the people
to stay. The work has begun and eEfforts are being made to
complete it by May 2020.
Health Camp – Twice a month, medical camp is being
organized in Palghar district. Malnourished children and
women are benefitted by this camp.
Distribution of Protein Powder – We receive ample supplies
of protein powder from Dr. Ulhas Kolhatkar and Dr. Varsha
Kolhatkar ,Dombivli. It is distributed to undernourished
children from the tehsils of Jawhar, Dhadgaon, Akkalkuva,
Taloda and Shirpur. Those children are gaining weight.
Ayurvedic examination center – Rukdikar Maharaj Trust,
Kolhapur arranges an Ayurvedic medical camp once a month
on the First Thursday of the month at Kashele, Karjat tehsil.
Patients are examined and medicine is given to them. Around
200 -225 patients from tehsils of Karjat, Murbad, Khalapur
etc. get benefit from this camp.
Shahada – Children from Dhadgaon and Akkalkuva tehsils,
who are suffering from malnutrition and other ailments, are
admitted to the Kulkarni hospital in Shahada for treatment
for last 10 years.
Training in stitching – Training center to assist in stitching is
functioning in Jawhar, Molgi, Dhadgaon and Shirpur (Mohide)
tehsils. Training was imparted to 565 women, out of which
342 women are earning well by doing the stitching business.
Miss Lata Kallu Pawra of the first batch in Shirpur is earning
Rs. 700-800 a day. Kavita Padwi from Survani doing the job of
stitching has set up a shop and gave Rs. 30,000 to her
husband to buy a vehicle, ‘Commander’.
Irrigation - Shabari Seva Samiti has completed 24 projects
related to water supply. It includes 17 wells, 6 irrigation
schemes and 1 barrage. This has enabled 500 acres of field to
receive water round the year. This has stopped migration of
400 families from 15 villages. Those families are now on the
prospering course.
Assistance – Shri. Devisingh Padwi (our full-time worker)
stayed in the house made from Kuda in Dhadgaon. The house
caught fire due to short-circuit. Incidentally, Pramod
Karandikar and Ranjana Karandikar of our organization
reached Dhadgaon on the same day. So it was possible to
provide grain, clothes, utensils and cash to Devisingh. As soon
as the message spread on the Whatsapp group of the
organization, volunteers from Thane, Dombivli, Karjat, kalian,
Mumbai, Pune offered to help in this regard. We shall build a
permanent house for Devisingh.

Publicity – We implement our initiatives and programs
silently. They get publicized in the daily newpapers like
Loksatta, Sakal, Pudhari, Lokmat, Navamaharashtra, Tarun
Bharat etc. and the weekly publication Vivek. The
organization has never tried to gain publicity; yet we got it.
We could achieve this because of the volunteers. They
are from urban areas like Dombivli, Thane, Karjat, Pune,
Mumbai and full time men, women volunteers working in
rural and remote areas. The manpower coupled with their
dedication and persistent efforts did it. I have no words to
describe their fervor. This is the result of united hard work.
The most significant factor is the apt support provided by
the donors. Belief of the donors is like the backbone and
mainstay for our organization! All the donors make their
contributions to this organization with firm credence.
It is the duty of each volunteer of this organization to
ensure that every single rupee from this fund will be spent for
the right cause. With the experience of past 17 years, we, the
trustees assure the donors that their donations will be
utilized for the proper social transformation. We heartily
express our gratitude towards all the volunteers, well-wishers
and donors!!
The organization does not receive any government aid.
Our differentiating characteristic is that 96% amount of the
donations received by the organization is spent on the
projects. So many donors have approached us themselves
and provided the funds. Following is the list of few companies
