A Trip to Brooklyn

by Sue Baldock

June 20th marked the Summer Solstice and with it came the mer-maids! I’m ashamed to admit it, but I cheated on Sunnyside and crossedthe border to Brooklyn for some fun in the sun. With the lure ofMermaids, Neptune, fishes and octopuses, I was drawn to Coney Islandfor the 29th Annual Mermaid Parade last Saturday.

Celebrating summer, water and fun, participants come from all overto express their creativity and artistry. A young woman from NorthCarolina marched ala Tippy Hendren in The Birds complete withseagulls attached to her dress.

With men on stilts, pregnant sea goddesses, and even a marchingband, the party atmosphere and music had everyone dancing as theywalked along Surf Avenue. From Mermaids to Guppies, this parade hadit all; with the best costume, in my opinion, going to local SunnysidersPatrice Lee (a fish) and Jonathan Dunn (a fish caught in a net)!

(continued from front page)

After giving her his award, Van Bramer had a lot on his plate, too, buthe took the time to listen to Asha’s words, even displaying emotion andapproval of the youngster’s public-speaking skills before heading to hisnext gig. In all, he attended graduation ceremonies at P.S. 199, P.S. 150,P.S. 11, P.S. 78, P.S. 166 and P.S. 12. He also stopped by P.S. 152 andP.S. 112 to congratulate the classes of 2012 and award City Councilcitations to certain graduates.

As for Asha, she went directly to her Sunnyside home after hergraduation and celebrated with family. Her next academic stop is theInstitute for Collaborative Education, a public junior and high school inManhattan.“I felt proud,” Asha said about her big day and elbow-rubbing with power. “I feel excited about the next year, but I’m going tomiss my old school.”

City’s Marketing ChiefTalks Tourism InWestern Queens

by Rob MacKay

NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta spoke about the eco-nomic benefits of the ongoing tourism boom in the Big Apple duringthe Long Island City Business Improvement District’s membershipmeeting on June 20. New York City is the world’s most populartourist destination, he said, hosting more than 50 million visitors, including 10.6 million foreigners, in 2011. These sightseers spentroughly $32 billion, supporting 320,000 jobs. Of this group, roughly8.2 million people spent about $4.1 billion in Queens. As proof of thenew reality, plans are in the works to build the 19th hotel in LongIsland City, which only had one such lodging a decade ago. Don’t Take a Vacationfrom Investing

Summer is here — whichmeans a vacation most likely isn’tfar away. Whether you’re hittingthe road, jumping on a plane oreven enjoying a “staycation” athome, you’re probably lookingforward to some down time withyour family. But not every aspectof your life should be relaxed. Spe-cifically, you don’t want to take avacation from investing — whichmeans you need to become a dili-gent, year-round investor.

Here are a fewsuggestions that can

help:Keep on investing. Don’t head

to the investment “sidelines” whenthe financial markets experiencevolatility. You don’t want to be anonparticipant when things turnaround because, historically, theearly stage of any market rally isgenerally when the biggest gainsoccur. (Keep in mind that pastperformance of the market is not aguarantee of future results.)

Keep learning. In just aboutany classroom, the best studentsare the ones who get the most outof their education and put theirlearning to the best use. And thesame is true of the investmentworld: The more you know aboutthe forces that affect your invest-ments’ performance, and aboutwhy you own the investments youdo, the more likely you are to makethe right moves — and the less

likely you’ll be to make hasty andunwise decisions.

Keep your focus on the longterm. As an investor, you need tolook past those events — such asnatural disasters, recession fearsand political instability abroad —that may have noticeable short-term effects on the financial mar-kets but little impact over the longerterm. So instead of making invest-ment decisions based on today’sheadlines, think about what youwant your financial picture to looklike in 10, 20 or 30 years — andtake the appropriate steps to helpmake that picture materialize. These steps include following along-term, disciplined investmentstrategy that’s suitable for yourindividual needs, making adjust-ments as time goes on and workingwith a professional financial advi-sor who knows your situation andcan help you make the right choices.

Keep looking for growth op-portunities. To achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortableretirement, you’ll need to owngrowth-oriented investments, suchas stocks and other investmentsthat contain equities. The percent-age of your holdings devoted tostocks should be based on your risktolerance, time horizon and prox-imity to retirement. But no matterwhat your situation, you want aportfolio that’s designed to helpyou meet your investment goals.

Keep relying on“hardworking” investments. Tohelp ensure your investments areworking hard for you, choose thosevehicles that can help you in mul-tiple ways. For example, when youinvest in a 401(k) or other em-ployer-sponsored retirement plan, your money grows on a tax-de-ferred basis, which means it canaccumulate faster than if it wereplaced in an investment on whichyou paid taxes every year. (Keepin mind that taxes are due uponwithdrawal, and withdrawals priorto age 59Ω may be subject to a10% IRS penalty.) Plus, you typi-cally fund your 401(k) with pretaxdollars, so the more you put ineach year, the lower your taxableincome. Furthermore, with thechoices available in your plan, youcan create a good mix ofinvestments.Enjoy your vacationthis summer. But no matter whatthe season, don’t take a break frominvesting. Your efforts may payoff nicely for you in the future. This article was written by EdwardJones for use by your localEdward Jones Financial AdvisorVincent Renda, whose office islocated at 47-01 Queens Blvd.Suite 203 Sunnyside NY 11104.Phone him at 718-361-1306.

A Dearth Of MirrorsIt seems there is an unacknowledged crisis in our society – missing mirrors. Observing the attire (or

lack of it) sported by so many, one can only conclude that they are oblivious to their own reflections. Therefore to avoid the visual assault of the underclad and overflowing folks among us, I suggest the giftof mirrors as a solution.
