Defer capital expenditures on new IT tech-nology or additional data center capacity.

Extending the life of your data center assets can help enable you to defer significant capital expenditures on new IT tech-nology or additional data center capacity. According to indus-try estimates, more than 80 million servers will be installed in the next few years, distributed server utilization is less than 15 percent and virtualization maturity is at 20 to 30 percent. So, there is a lot of opportunity to improve asset utilization. Operating a smarter data center can enable you to double IT capacity or reduce operational expenses by up to 50 percent.

OverviewBy enabling the integration of applications, services and platforms, an effective middleware strategy can help deliver multiple benefits. Along with a more efficient, optimized use of available IT resources, middleware can support collaboration, improve system performance and availability and offer flexibility. First, however, you need to develop a strategy and design that define your vision for delivering a middleware infrastructure. Without expert planning and architecture during implementation, a middleware infrastructure can be difficult to manage, expensive to operate and underutilized.

• Reduced the costs from $28 million to $8 million a year

• Reduced resource required to manage that middleware environment from 26 people down to 3

• Reduced servers required from 24 down to 8• Increased both availability and their

responsiveness to new customer demands from a more standardized environment

Rationalize Your Data Center

Get an optimal portfolio to provide a much more effective, responsive and flexible model for the future.

Chances are you have multiple server rooms, or multiple data centers, and under-utilized servers and storage devices. Typically, there are ways to rationalize those assets into an optimal portfolio to provide a much more effective, responsive and flexible model for the future.

Organizations rely on dedicated data centers as well as backup sites, remote locations, wiring closets and server rooms. Consolidation and relocation away from expensive data center leases or ineffective locations can significantly improve efficiencies, reduce the assets managed and improve resource utilization.

From 1997 to 2007, IBM consolidated the total number of data centers used to manage our own business from 235 to 12 in all geographies, consolidated from 31 different networks to one globally managed network, and reduced the number of deployed applications from more than 15,000 to just 4,700. The operational cost savings totaled US$1.5 billion over five years.

A comprehensive data center strategy can provide an objective analysis to help you rationalize your data center portfolio to address application availability and capacity requirements and to improve operational efficiency. Analytics enable mathematical modeling that can reveal your existing data center state in both financial and operational terms and provide alternative scenarios based on your business data. In addition, analytics offer logical dependency mapping tools for applications and servers to assist in relocation planning.

A major university in Australia needed to support rapid data growth to be able to serve a population of 45,000 students on 11 campuses. An IBM team conducted a data center strategy engagement to determine the risk factors and requirements for a new data center. The university then asked IBM to assist with implementing a scalable, modular data center. The university was one of the first institutions in Melbourne to adopt free cooling. This helped the university realize US$200,000 in energy savings over the ten-year life of the data center.

Customer ProfileA U.S. technology manufacturer needed to update its data center strategy to address asset concentration and improve application availability. Around 90 percent of its global production workload was concentrated in a single, nonredundant aging facility. With the help of IBM, the manufacturer developed a strategy that included upgrading the existing primary data center to improve resiliency and building a new data center outside the region, relocating critical production into the new data center and disaster recovery into the existing data center. As a result, the manufacturer can:

• Provide capacity for new acquisitions and meet service-level agreements and disaster recovery objectives.

• Realized 32 percent ROI from moving applications to another data center location

• Reduced capital expenses for infrastructure upgrades by 50 percent—all without increasing the existing operational budget.

IBM can help you plan, design, build and test a more effi-cient data center, whether you are building a new data center or expanding an existing one, saving you up to 50 percent in operational costs.

13

Flexible Data Center Design

14

Match your business requirements to your IT requirements and add data center capacity.

Your data center must be designed to be flexible and cost-effective to meet your company’s computing needs, no matter how demands change. But how can you increase data center capacity while avoiding the pitfalls of IT complexity and sprawling hardware?

Upgrade to a modular data center design with IBM. Modular data centers are not about containerization, but about us-ing smaller increments of standardized components. These enable you to match your business requirements to your IT requirements and add data center capacity when needed. A modular approach can enable you to pay as you grow and buy only what you need, when you need it, to defer capital and operational costs by perhaps 40 to 50 percent.

Data centers designed by IBM deliver flexibility throughout their entire life cycles, over an expected life of 10 or 20 years. But how can you estimate the capacity your business will need years from now? The best up-front investment is a statement of requirements created during data center strat-egy planning. We’ve infused our data center strategy with mathematical modeling services and tools to help bring the future into the present, so you can take action today. The ana-lytics are designed to reveal your existing data center’s status. They report on your data center’s financial and operational terms, while modeling alternative scenarios based on your business data.

OverviewThese services help align your IT capabilities and resources to better support your business goals and shift your focus from systems management to service management.
