Punk IPA became the UK’s fastest growing alternative craft beer and the top selling IPA in Scandinavia. We also launched Equity for Punks and in a ground-breaking first, we offered people the opportunity to buy shares in our company online. Over 1300 invested and our anti-business business model was born. We brewed the world’s strongest ever beer, Tactical Nuclear Penguin at 32%. We also aged a beer on the deck of a fishing boat, smashed loads of industrial beers with a golf club and grew our business by 200% (in a recession).

What started off as a dream 5 years ago became a reality as we moved from a brewery we cobbled together on a shoestring to our new world class craft brewery. 6 new BrewDog beer bars opened across the UK with a new flagship site opening in Shoreditch as Diageo infamously cheated us out of an award for our bars which resulted in a global media storm. We were awarded the Fastest Growing Company in Scotland and named by The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 as the fastest growing food and drink company in the UK. We projected ourselves naked onto the houses of parliament, made a special beer for the Olympics, launched the phenomenal Dead Pony Club and hosted 2,000 Equity Punks in Aberdeen for our rock ‘n roll AGM.

Martin & James started BrewDog in April 2007. Both only 24 at the time, we leased a building, got some scary bank loans and started making some hardcore craft beers.

We brewed tiny batches, filled bottles by hand and sold our beers at local markets and out of the back of our beat up old van.

Our biggest mission when we set up BrewDog was to make other people as passionate about great craft beer as we are. And that is still our biggest mission today.

2008 2009

Things started getting crazy for us in 2008. We somehow persuaded the banks to give us money to buy loads more tanks and a proper bottling machine.

We masterminded the UK’s strongest ever beer, Tokyo. This beer resulted in a huge media storm, and, if you believed the headlines, the downfall of Western civilisation.

And in only the 2nd year of BrewDog we also became Scotland’s largest independent brewery: we worked hard.

Opening our first craft beer bar in our home town of Aberdeen was a dream come true. We picked up the Gold Medal for Hardcore IPA at the World Beer Cup. We brewed a 55% beer and packed it in road kill making it the world’s most expensive beer ever as we fused art, craft beer and taxidermy. We managed to find space for even more fermentation tanks in our increasingly cramped brewery and we also held our first ever AGM for our shareholders in a very snowy Aberdeen in December.

We opened bars in Edinburgh, Glasgow and a flagship London venue in Camden.

We also brewed a beer at the bottom of the ocean and dispensed a 28% beer from a modified deer’s head as we started building our new eco-brewery with demand for our beers reaching scary new levels.

Most significantly we also launched Equity for Punks II and in doing so raised over £2.2m to help us continue to grow and welcomed over 5,000 new shareholders. Martin also dressed up as the Queen for our year end video blog.

Not finished yet. Doing some bad ass stuff though.

We talk all things malt with our cracking team of brewers Are we the only ones that sometimes think that malt is the unsung hero of beer? With the craft beer scene alive and well with hopheads, we decided to spend time giving malt the recognition it deserves with some of the people who know best – our brew team. Here’s what they had to say:

BrewTeam

DaveMy favourite malt is chocolate malt because it’s absolutely ace! I really like using it in porter as opposed to chocolate stouts which is the beer most people probably associate it with. When used in a porter, chocolate malt creates depth of flavour as well as bite which is a cool combination.

FranzCarafa Special is a must try because it’s a dehusked, roasted malt which gives a lot of colour (black) as well as coffee and chocolate flavours while not being as astringent as other dark malts. It’s very versatile and can be used in Imperial Stouts to create insane coffee and chocolate flavours to Black IPAs where you only want the colour but not so much the dark taste.

John AllenMunich is a fantastic all-rounder in the world of speciality malt. It tastes a little bit roasted, a little bit caramel and a little bit like biscuit. At BrewDog, we generally use it in stouts and darker German beer styles. It gives the beer a rich, dark brown colour and works well when blended with Vienna and Caramalt too; if you really want to treat yourself to some malty magic!

NickEveryone needs to check out Gambrinus Honey Malt! It imparts a beautiful round honey character to the beer. I love it because it really fills out the beer with flavour and compliments any kind of hop; although works especially well with American varieties. Gambrinus is currently the smallest malting house in North America and it’s obvious they take great care of their malt. Try this malt in action in Kern Rivers’ Citra Double IPA.

StephenMarris Otter is really up there for me. It’s the perfect blank canvas; low in colour and flavour, but packed full of essential technical qualities - such as high sugar and nitrogen levels - which assist the yeast in converting the wort into beer. Marris Otter is the backbone of all our beers and an ideal building block which often gets overlooked.

BowmanRye is one of my favourite malts although it’s not really something people use a lot in brewing. It’s got a distinctive, crisp, spicy mouth feel. It can be difficult to brew with and increases the complexity of the flavour. We used a little bit of Rye malt in Nanny State and also in the Flying Dog and BrewDog collaboration – Dog Fight – which is a Rye IPA. This beer had a lot of big, America style hops in it which worked well with the dry, peppery body created by the malt.

James:

Martin:

Stone World Bistro & Gardens, Escondido, California

The bar is set in a lush, diverse garden, making it a stunning location while maintaining a really cosy, friendly and chilled atmosphere where you can relax with beer and friends.

Barcade, Brooklyn

This is a craft beer bar with loads of arcade video game machines inside. I think that says pretty much all I need to here! Hanging out with a few beers playing Contra is my idea of an awesome night.

BrewDog Glasgow

My favourite BrewDog bar, but don’t tell the others…shhh!

Popeye, Tokyo

This bar has 70 craft beer taps and therefore holds the widest selection of awesome beers in the whole of Japan. Oh and the staff all wear bow-ties!

Mikkeller Bar, Copenhagen

It’s an intimate, delicate bar. Their website says ‘beauty generates beauty’, a philosophy that’s intrinsically evident when you walk through the door.

Lagunitas Brewery Taproom, Petaluma, California

Lagunitas is one of my favourite breweries, and their taproom is a great little place to hang out, listen to live music, enjoy some awesome food and taste some brilliant beers.

Nidaba, Montebelluna, Italy

An excellent venue for beer paired with classic, delicious Italian dining. There are some cool craft breweries popping up in Italy, and Nidaba showcases these in the perfect way.

BrewDog Aberdeen

As our first bar, and our Flagship, it’s my favourite place to enjoy a beer. It’s got an awesome atmosphere and is like a second home for me.

Public House in The Venetian, Las Vegas

This place takes its beer very seriously, and is a brilliant craft beer haven in amongst the bright lights of Vegas. Expect a heavy dose of gourmet glamour and killer beers.

Feral Brewery Tap room and bistro, Swan Valley, Western Australia

The tap room and bistro are a lot of fun, and great for chilling with ace Aussie beer in the sun. They also run guided beer tours, which are like the Feral equivalent of BrewDog’s beer school.

Scott and FionaScott and Fiona both invested in EFPII and have increased their shareholding in our latest offering. Scott explains;

“I invested in EFP2 (and again in EFP3) primarily because I liked the beer, and the Aberdeen Bar was a cool place to hang out with my friends - I also ended up meeting the woman I love at the bar, so I’ve got some of the Aberdeen staff at the time to thank for their hand in that!

For me, being an Equity Punk is about the feeling like you are actually a part of what’s going on - through things like events at the brewery, shareholder discounts and not to mention the mighty AGM! Customer engagement and loyalty are much more valuable things to have than just our money, and it feels like BrewDog really gets that.”

CalvinAberdeen local’s will know Calvin as one of our stellar bar staff, but may not know that he was an investor before he started working at our flagship.

“When Equity for Punks became available I had no hesitation in investing. What better way to start your portfolio than with shares in the fastest growing food and drinks company in the UK?

Since my investment I have actually started working in the Aberdeen bar, and I’ve loved every second. It is great to meet like minded beer enthusiasts every day? Well, converting a liquid cardboard drinker into a craft beer fanatic - that’s why I love beer schools so much.

Lauren and RobMeet Rob and Lauren, this father-daughter duo’s involvement in Equity for Punks spans two offerings.

“I actually did a case study on BrewDog as I felt that it was a vibrant story worth sharing. Any company that can make such a success of it when the economy is in such a state is admirable. I bought shares in EFPII and am proud to be an investor. It’s simply a bonus that I love the beer!”

Lauren recalls her first visit to BrewDog Aberdeen as a pretty life changing event; “I never understood the whole concept of beer, I was a die-hard vodka or cocktail girl. One sip of Punk IPA completely changed that; I’m proud to say I’m a beer snob now! I felt such a zen when I finally bought my own shares just the other week. It’s so amazing to be a part of something which is so clearly taking off, and I can’t wait until the next AGM!”

Impending Liquid Anarchy:

Blitz ApricotBerlinner Weisse was once the most popular drink in Berlin with 700 breweries brewing this heralded speciality. Now the style is teetering on the edge of extinction and there are only 2 breweries left in Germany making this style of beer.

Blitz Apricot is a low alcohol, light, refreshing, effervescent, zippy and tart wheat ale. Traditionally, either raspberry or woodruff is used in Germany but we thought we would up the ante by using apricots for our beers. It is our intention to brew further variations of Blitz using different fruits over the next few months.

Transferring from oak into tank: Mix TapeMix tape is a blend of 2 huge oak aged IPAs. 50% of the beer is an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in single grain scotch whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other 50% is Triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, hopped up, amped up with American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch whisky and oak ageing. Expect it in early September.

Dog WiredBrewed in collaboration with Soren from New Zealand’s stellar 8-Wired brewery, this is an imperial pilsner. Sitting at a dangerously drinkable 7.1% ABV, there’s a touch of munich malt which gives this beer that little extra caramel biscuit bite to compliment the lip smackingly tropical hops. Expect an all out NZ hoppy riot.

Abstrakt AB:14 The latest release in our Abstrakt series is an oak aged Imperial Weizenbock. Expect a big, bold mouth-feel backed by some powerful banana, caramel, toffee, vanilla and spicy hits woven together with some classic weizen notes. As close to bannoffee pie as a beer can taste. Seriously.

Recipe Development:

How to Disappear CompletelyNew adventures in imperial milds. We are currently developing the recipe for this beer and intend to brew it next week. Based on a small batch we brewed back in 2009 and named after my (James) favourite Radiohead song. The beer will be a modest 2.8%, reasonably dark in colour with low bitterness and an absolute avalanche of dry hops.

Consider this like a series of mini movie trailers. Except they are not for movies, they are for upcoming BrewDog beers. These beers are currently either fledgling concepts, fermenting away in our tanks, ageing in oak barrels or rattling along our bottling line. If you are lucky, they will soon be in your beer glass and subsequently your mouth.

We are really excited to announce the latest BrewDog Bar location: BrewDog Shepherd’s Bush will be open by October 2013.

Our newest bar, which will be our third in London, will bring a bounty of hops and craft beer hope to the people of West London.

Located at 15-19 Goldhawk Road, London, W12 8QQ, BrewDog Shepherd’s Bush will feature 40 (yes 40!) beers on tap, a BBQ food menu and some vintage arcade machines.

We will announce a formal opening date for BrewDog Shepherd’s Bush later this summer, and you can keep up to date with news from the bar on twitter here @BrewDogShepBush.

CharlotteWhat do you get when you cross a girl from Newcastle with craft beer, weird otter knowledge, a love of cats and a healthy dose of sarcasm? The answer - our junior brewer, Charlotte.

“I tried my first craft beer whilst on holiday in Denmark. It completely blew me away and from then on I made it my mission to try all the cool beers I could find whilst learning about beer and brewing.

Working as a junior brewer, Charlotte’s job is to work with the Brewhouse, cellaring and operating the separator.

Charlotte is one of many craft beer-lovin’ ladies who work at BrewDog but an imbalance between the number of men and women working in the industry still exists. Charlotte explains why this might be: “Being a brewer is mentally and physically demanding...the gun show at BrewDog is quite impressive to say the least. This combination of having to be a scientist, who can lift weights, fix leaky plumbing and watch computer programs like a hawk seems to be off putting to some women, but if you’ve got the skills and the passion for it, there is no reason why women can’t be as influential as men in the brewing world.”

“We get to do loads of experimentation here at BrewDog. The only thing that’s limiting the craft beer movement as a whole is the imagination of the brewers. Luckily we’re a pretty creative bunch”.
