Money - making it manageableIs the cost of studying putting you off? Affordability isone of the biggest factors in going back to education.Here at Walsall College, we make it easier withstraightforward financial advice from our dedicatedteam and a range of support funds to help with costs.

How much will I pay for a course?If you’re under 19, full time courses are FREE. If you’re19 or over, you’ll find the costs of different courses inthis guide - including tuition and exam fees unlessotherwise indicated, however depending on yourcircumstances, tuition fee on certain courses may beFREE. You may still have to pay for exam/registration ormaterials costs but the Walsall College Bursary may beable to help with the cost of these (if you are studying 6hours per week or more).

You’re eligible for FREE tuition if:

• you get state benefits such as Job Seeker’sAllowance (JSA), Employment and SupportAllowance (ESA) or in the Work Related ActivityGroup (WRAG) - you must be aged 19 or over andapplying for a course up to Level 2

• you are enrolling on a full Level 2 qualification, aged19-23 (at the start of your course) and don’t alreadyhold a full Level 2 qualification or higher

• you are enrolling on a full Level 3 qualification, aged19-23 (at the start of your course) and don’t alreadyhold a full Level 3 qualification or higher

How can I find out if I qualify for a FREEcourse?Our Enrolment Team can help. They will be able to giveyou all the general advice you’ll need on 01922 657000.

Is there other financial help available?The Walsall College Bursary can help with travel,equipment, exams, childcare or the cost of studying ingeneral.

Are there any other costs?You will be expected to make a £10 contribution toprinting and copying costs. Your learner pass will giveyou access to printing facilities and will be preloadedwith a minimum of £15 worth of printing (dependenton your area of study).

How do I pay?You can pay by either cash, cheque, credit or debit card.

Can I pay in instalments?Instalment payments are available for courses costing£100 or more. Speak to a member of the GuidanceTeam who will work out an instalment plan with you,at no extra cost. An initial payment must be made onenrolment.

What do I need to bring with me toenrolment?1. One of the following forms of ID:

• Passport • Driving Licence • National Insurance card • Bank credit or debit card • Results slips/exam certificates

2. Payment of your £10 contribution forphotocopying/printing

3. Payment of your fees, if you’re not eligible forconcessions

If you are unemployedTo claim concessions, you will need to bring along proofof relevant benefits dated within three months ofenrolment.

If your employer is paying for your courseBring along a letter, on company letter-headed paper,confirming that they can be invoiced for your fees.

If you are a non E.U. studentBring along proof of residency, e.g. Passport or Visa.

If finances have been holding you back fromstarting a course, you can now apply for aloan to help with the cost of course fees!

Aged 24 or over and thinking aboutstudying a course at Level 3 or above?You must be enrolling on to an eligible course at Level3 or above (such as a Certificate/Diploma).

Your household income isn’t taken into account andthere’s no credit check. Repayments do not start untilApril 2016 and you will not have to pay anything backuntil you are earning over £21,000 a year.

How much can you get?The amount you will get depends on the type ofcourse you take and how much the fees are for thecourse. The minimum loan you can get is £300.

How many loans can I apply for?You can apply for more 24+ Advanced Learning Loansafter you finish your course (up to 4 in total), but:

• you can only get 1 loan at a time

• once you’ve received a loan to undertake a courseyou won’t be able to take out another loan to dothe same type of course at the same level. You’ll beable take out further loans to complete differenttypes or levels of eligible courses.

EligibilityTo get a loan you must be:

• 24 or older on the first day you start yourcourse and the start day of your course must be onor after the 1st August 2014 (there’s no upper agelimit)

• living in the UK on the first day of your course, andhave lived in the UK, the Channel islands or the Isleof Man for 3 years immediately before the startdate of the course

Studying at this college or a training organisation inEngland approved for public funding.

Getting a loan does not depend on your householdincome and there is no credit check.

How to apply?You can to apply online or by post now for coursesstarting between 1st August 2014 and 31st July 2015.

What you need to know?You will need a National Insurance number before anymoney can be paid. However, you can still apply for aloan before confirming your National Insurancenumber details. You need your passport details oranother form of identity to apply - e.g. your birthcertificate.

Paying back your loanIf your course finishes before 2016, repayments won’tstart until April 2016. You pay back your loan (plusinterest) when you have finished your course and startearning more than £21,000 a year. If your incomedrops below this amount your repayment will stop.Each month you pay back 9% of any income over£21,000.

Leave or change your courseIf you leave or change your course after 2 weeks youwill have to pay back any money that has been paid tothe College.

Access to Higher Education (HE)If you get a loan to cover tuition fees for an Access toHE course (e.g. a course that will prepare you forHigher Education) and then complete a highereducation course, you will not have to repay theremaining loan for the Access course.

Do you want to gain the skills needed to progresson to an Apprenticeship? Traineeships are a new programme for young people aged16 to 24 to help them take the first step on the careerladder. By completing a traineeship, candidates willdevelop the skills and workplace experience required byemployers when hiring apprentices. Students will also havea lot more confidence in their own abilities and be job-ready.

Areas covered in the programme include:• focused work preparation training - eg CV writing,

interview preparation, job searching, inter-personal skills

• high-quality work experience - giving young people real-life work placement to enhance their skills andconfidence

• English and maths - for young people who have notachieved a GCSE grade C or equivalent or better

The initiative is part of the government’s wider aim toensure the future workforce possesses the skills thatemployers want in their apprentices and employees.
