Weekend Worship Theme: “True Christian Community!” In our Gospel from Matthew 18, Jesus gives us clear guidelines on how to resolve conflict. It sounds like pure Law….but believe it or not, there is a tremendous Gospel message contained within. Pastor Steve explores this passage to see the balance God always provides in His Word, and how He calls us to live in a true Christian community. Child Care Ministry celebrated Saturday The Child Care ministry, directed by Deb McDonald, cares for approx 130 children every day. Most of these families are not members of OS, and some do not have a church home. In Saturday’s service, we thank God for the “front line” of evangelism our Child Care teachers serve every day, sharing the Gospel with children who carry the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ into their homes. Dear Volunteers: THANK YOU “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” 1 Cor 12:27, We recognize and thank the many volunteers who keep OS moving forward. Whether you have spent numerous hours in service over the last year, or just one, know that your work is for the Lord; it is holy and sacred, and it matters to our Heavenly Father. Whether you served communion, cleaned the church, prepared meals, or swept a floor, we all share a single job description: sharing God’s love, and telling others about Jesus. Thank you for your partnership in the Gospel. Your work here at Our Shepherd truly makes a difference. Rev. Michael Salemink Speaks Today The mission of Lutherans for Life International is to equip Lutherans to be Gospel-motivated voices. Their message is “Here is what God has done that gives value and dignity to all human life.” We are blessed to have Pastor Salemink with us this weekend. He will speak before all services, and will lead the main Bible study in the sanctuary. OCTOBER BLOOD DRIVE!

Our next drive is October 2nd and is online for registration. The need is always there, but the recent flooding disaster in Houston makes your donation even more crucial. Mark the calendar for Monday October 2nd-from 1:00-7:00pm- and register at redcrossblood.org or call Beth at 248-828-7802. It will be in the lower level. If the 2nd is not a good date for you and you are eligible to give sooner, please do so at another location. Stay hydrated, have some iron intake, and avoid tea consumption a few days before giving your blood.

New book released by member Steve Luhring

“While Charles Dickens' immortal story is a compelling tale of transformation, imagine what it would look like had Dickens been ambitious enough to have had Scrooge go on to tackle some of the greatest questions in life, such as: Does God exist? If so, why is there such evil and suffer-ing in this world? Is there meaning and purpose in life? Is there an after-life? Is freedom worth fighting for, and what's at stake if we lose it? These pages are bold enough to do exactly that, and do it brilliantly.”

Parking Saturday Mornings “L” Shape Driveway On September 9th the Saturday Special Needs Adult Bible Class will be celebrating their 42nd year at Our Shepherd. To assist the families and direct care staff to arrive and return to pick up the adults, we ask church members and all people attending activities in the church building to please refrain from parking in the front driveway parking spaces by Door #7 (concrete wheelchair ramp). This will allow all the cars and specialized vans to easily park and enter the building with the adults having special needs.

Meet Scott Van Ornum

Associate Director of Music

“Next to theology I give music the highest place of honor.”

Martin Luther

Our Shepherd welcomes into our musical family Mr. Scott Van Ornum. As of September 1, 2017 Scott will serve as Associate Director of Music. In the past few years Scott has served as organist and accompanist for our Carols by Candlelight concerts, so he is familiar with our extraordinary legacy of music at Our Shepherd.

As keyboardist for the University of Michigan Chamber Choir, Scott brings unusual depth and artistry to ensemble music-making. His performances with the U of M Chamber Choir include a concert tour of Australia and New Zealand, which culminated with an invitational appearance at the New Zealand Choral Federation's 2014 National Conference.

Throughout his travels, Scott has performed concerts abroad including performances in Germany, Italy, France, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand. Scott has recently done extensive performing tours of South Africa and the southeastern US with the U of M Men’s Glee Club. He will join them again in 2018 playing piano and organ performing in Orchestra Hall, Chicago, and Southwestern states.

Scott has served at U of M’s All-State Program at Interlochen, and Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain. He has served on executive boards of the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra and the Ann Arbor and Detroit chapters of the American Guild of Organists. An honors graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and recipient of the “United States Presidential Scholars in the Arts” medal, Scott studied organ performance with David Craighead at the Eastman School, and with Marilyn Mason at U of M. He is also adjunct faculty member at Schoolcraft College in Livonia.

Scott is no stranger to the LCMS as he began his formal music training while at Bethlehem Lutheran in Saginaw; where he attended grade school and was confirmed. Over the past 30 years Scott has served numerous congregations as music director and organist. Please join us in welcoming him into the Our Shepherd family. May God continue to bless Scott in his music ministry for many years to come.
