Laser noticeThe printer is certified in the U.S. to conform to the requirements of DHHS21 CFR Subchapter J for Class I (1) laser products, and elsewhere iscertified as a Class I laser product conforming to the requirements of IEC60825-1.

Class I laser products are not considered to be hazardous. The printercontains internally a Class IIIb (3b) laser that is nominally a 5 milliwattgallium arsenide laser operating in the wavelength region of 770-795nanometers. The laser system and printer are designed so there is neverany human access to laser radiation above a Class I level during normaloperation, user maintenance, or prescribed service condition.

This chapter contains the codes and diagnostic tools to aid in providingcorrective action for a malfunctioning printer. To determine the correctiveaction to repair a printer, look for the following information:

Power-On Self Test (POST) sequenceWhen you turn the printer on, it performs a POST. Check for correct POSTfunctioning of the base printer by observing the following process:

1. All operator panel lights on momentarily2. Lights then flash on and off sequentially.3. After the lights quit flashing, the light flashes until the fuser comes

up to temperature (520 additional seconds, depending on the initialtemperature of the fuser) and then stays on.

4. If there is a problem in the printer such as a paper jam, the panel lightsindicate the problem. SeeCommon primary light patterns onpage 2-4 for more information.

5. The printer cycles down into standby mode, and lights solid.

Light patterns and error messagesUser attendance messages, paper jam errors, and service errors display alight pattern. This may be all the information you need. However, if youdouble-click on the panel, a second pattern may appear with moredetailed information. If you double-click a third time, you usually return tothe first pattern. Not all initial level light patterns have secondary patterns;

when you double-click, the pattern does not change.All service errors are indicated by all lights flashing as the primarynotification or code. The secondary code indicates an area or function whichhas the error. Additional tertiary codes used for service (seeServicetertiary error codes on page 2-40 ) indicate specific errors. SeeServicecodes on page 2-36 .

Use the five operator panel buttons to open a menu, scroll through a list ofvalues, change printer settings, and respond to printer messages.Note: Buttons act on the information displayed on the second line of the

operator panel.

The following information describes the functions of each button.

Button Function

Go Press Go to: Return to the Ready state if the printer is offline (theReady

message does not appear on the display).

Exit printer menus and return to the Ready state. Clear some operator panel messages. Resume printing after loading media and clearing paper jams.

Exit Power Saver.If you have changed printer settings from the operator panelmenus, press Go before sending a job to print. The printermust displayReady for jobs to print.

Menu Each end of the button has a function. PressMenu>: WhenReady is displayed, to take the printer offline (out of

the Ready state) and enter the menus.

WhenBusy is displayed, to take the printer to the JobMenu. When the printer is offline, to scroll through the menus.

Select Press Select to: Open the menu shown on the second line of the operator

panel. Depending on the type of menu, this action: Opens the menu and displays the first item in the menu. Opens the menu item and displays the default setting.

Clear certain messages from the operator panel.

Return Press Return to return to the previous menu level or menuitem.

This message displays when the PPDSinterpreter has encountered a font error.Note: This error may only occur when thePPDS compiler requests a font which is notpresent or is not installed.The following actions may be taken: Press Go to clear the message and

51 DefectiveFlash

This message displays when the printerdetects a defective flash. This error may occurat power on, or during flash format and writeoperations. Press Go to clear the message.

The flash is marked as bad, and normaloperation continues. Flash operations are notallowed until the problem is resolved.

52 Flash Full This message displays when there is notenough free space in the flash memory to holdthe resources that have been requested to be

written to flash.The following actions may be taken: Press Go to clear the message and

54 Std NetworkSoftware Error

This error displays when a network port isdetected, but the printer cannot establishcommunications with it.Press Go to clear the message. The printerdisables all communications to the networkinterface.

55 UnsupportedFlash

An unsupported flash option is installed in theDIMM slot. Turn off the printer, and removethe unsupported flash option in the specifiedslot.

56 Std ParallelPort Disabled This error is displayed when data is sent to theprinter across the parallel port, but the parallelport has been disabled. Once this message isdisplayed, reporting of further errors issuppressed until the menus are entered, orthe printer is reset. The following actions maybe taken: Press Go to clear the message. The printer

discards any data received on the parallelport.

Press Menu untilJob Menu appears, andselect Reset Printer .

56 Standard USBPort Disabled Displayed when status is requested over theUSB port, but the port has been disabled.Once the error has been displayed for the firsttime, reporting of further errors is suppressed

This message displays when thephotoconductor unit is near end of life. PressGo to clear the message.

84 Replace Photoconductor This message displays when thephotoconductor is exhausted. The printer isdisabled until the photoconductor is replaced.Replace the photoconductor:1. Turn the printer off, and replace the

photoconductor unit.2. Reset the page count. Press and hold Select and Return while

turning the printer on. Release the button whenPerforming

Self Test displays. Select Reset Maint Cnt, and press
