It is an elementary and secondary process
Assess your readiness by using the Ontario Leadership Framework and supported by our YRDSB Leadership Strategy

Principal SupportYour administrator may assist you in preparing for the process in the following ways:
• Connect candidates with Superintendents and other system leaders
• Ensure ALP is up to date and that candidates can provide their most recent TPA at Stage 3 (interview) of the process
• Participate in the Stage 2 professional discussion (internal candidates)
If your administrator is a member of the selection committee there are certain restrictions to the support that can be provided:
Can provide assistance to covering letter and résumé; not to written submission
Can provide a reference but will not participate in committee discussions on your readiness
Can participate in the professional discussion at Stage 2
On Going Communication• Contacted after completion of each stage in the process by email• A confirmation email will be sent to your Principal on the following day
(internal candidates)• Selection process feedback will be provided by members of the selection
team • Occurs at the end of each stage of selection process for those not
proceeding to the next stage

Stage 2: Professional Discussion/Problem-Solving
• Discussion regarding written submission (Principal attends to support for internal candidates; for external candidates, supervisor should have reviewed your written submission and will be asked a question on the reference form), problem solving scenario which includes a written component

Stage One: Application Process• For internal candidates, visit our Careers page at bww.yrdsb.ca

• Posting is hosted on Apply to Education and must have an account to apply
• Application posted on September 25th and closes October 4th @ 11:30 p.m.

Stage One: Application Process• View the on-line application and print a copy to assist you in your
preparation
• Spell check all the application components (cover letter, résumé, written submission)
• Don’t worry about the visual appeal of your on-line résumé and cover letter
• Keep formatting simple
Once your application is submitted…• Receive an automatic acknowledgement
• Recruitment will prepare your application file, check OCT Public Register and current personnel file, etc.
• Email all referees with instructions and timelines for providing reference
• Notifications regarding Stage 2 go out starting on November 6, 2017

Selecting References• Referees will be asked to rate candidates on the domains in the OLF
• Must include your current Superintendent and current Principal as referees
• Provide one other professional referee who can speak to your leadership and readiness for the role:
• A Principal you have worked with in the past
• An administrator in another school or board you have worked with
• Current Vice-Principal
• Pre-conferencing is a necessity
Information Regarding Referees…• Provide a list of contact numbers – business, home, cell, email
• Inform referees that we will be contacting them by email immediately following receipt of your on-line application
• Further contact by a member of the selection committee
• We will not chase referees
Selection Process – Stage Two
Stage Two: Professional Dialogue Part I (Internal Candidates) • Conducted at a central location
• Approximately 30 minutes in length
• Discussion to follow up on your written submission from Stage 1
If you are a reapplying candidate, part of the dialogue will be an opportunity for you to highlight your growth since your last application. You will be given the opportunity to show how previous feedback has supported your readiness for this subsequent application.
Stage Two: Professional Dialogue Part I (Internal Candidates) • Your Principal will be present for the first portion of
Stage Two;
• Assessment team will have a follow up discussion with your Principal after your session with them
• If you are not bringing your current Principal, please contact H.R. to seek approval
Part I (External Candidates)• Conducted at a central location
• 30 minutes in length
• Discussion to follow up on your written submission
If you are a reapplying candidate, part of the dialogue will be an opportunity for you to highlight your growth since your last application. You will be given the opportunity to show how previous feedback has supported your readiness for this subsequent application.
• Your Principal will be asked to comment on specific probes related to your written submission during the reference check process; will not be present at the dialogue
Part Two Problem Solving Scenario• Two parts; oral and written – 45 minutes
• Respond orally to a typical problem encountered by a Vice-Principal
• Opportunity for reflection
• Written follow-up exercise related to the scenario
• Stage Two – Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st
Selection Process – Stage Three
Interview• 40-minute interview
• Interview panel consists of:
• Superintendent
• Secondary Principal
• Elementary Principals (2)
• Arrive 20 minutes prior to interview
• Provided with the first interview question prior to interview
Interview continued…• No opportunity for opening remarks
• A variety of types of questions
• Appropriate to use frameworks to respond to interview questions
• Not appropriate to bring external resources except for your notes to the first question
• An opportunity at end of interview to make concluding remarks if you wish
Interview continued…At conclusion of your interview:
• You will be asked to step out of the room for a few minutes
• Interview team will be given time to discuss any areas they feel they would like to probe further based on your responses
• You will be invited back into the room and may be asked to provide additional information for one of your responses
• Stage Three – Dec. 14th and 15th
Ongoing Communication• Contacted after each stage in the process by email• Feedback will be provided by members of the selection team• Occurs at the end of each stage of the selection process for
those candidates not proceeding• Feedback for successful candidates will be offered at the end of
the process
