Transcript of JLR Bell News - YRDSB
Where has all the time gone? Approaching the last few weeks of school, we have
each minute of every day filled with learning opportunities, activities and
excursions (see our calendar). Staff are busy having students finish projects and
assessments in their quests to accumulate final marks. Please make sure that your
child is rested and arrive on time since we are running out of days to complete all
our assessments. With the heat comes muggy conditions so please make sure
your children have water bottles so they can hydrate themselves throughout the
day.
A few year end reminders:
1. Term 2 reports will go home on Tuesday, June 28th.
2. The last day of school is Wednesday, June 29th. Students will be dismissed
at 11:35 a.m. so please make sure you have made arrangements for their pick
up
3. Thursday, June 30th is a PA Day allocated for staff to finish any last tasks
related to the current school year while also doing preliminary planning for the
start of September, 2016.
4. School resumes on Tuesday, September 6th, 2016 right after Labor Day.
If you know of any families that have school age children in our neighborhood
please let them know to come in and register their child before the end of the

Allergy Alert!
Students and Medication
Protecting our Instructional Time At J.L.R. Bell, we make every effort to protect student instructional time .
In order to avoid classroom disruptions, students will not be notified during
instructional times about items dropped off for them in the office. Students are
welcome to check for them at the office at the beginning of recess or lunch.
Mrs. Slagter will buzz into rooms just before recess, lunch and home dismissal.
If your child has an appointment, please send a note with your child to the
teacher. If possible, please arrange to pick them up during the recess or lunch
break.
We realize this is not always possible, but any additional efforts in this regard
would be most appreciated.
Either on a regular basis or at times throughout the year, some students may
need to take medication at school. Parents must complete a permission form and
have it approved by the Principal before medication can be taken or stored at
school. All medication is kept locked in the office and students are supervised as
they take and medication. Students are not permitted at any time to take any
medication to school and keep it in their classroom, lunch bags or backpacks.
Please contact the office if you have any questions.
Due to students with extreme food allergies as well as making a
conscious effort to promote healthy food choices, we will not allow food
products for birthdays as well as fast food purchases for lunch
(i.e. McDonald’s) into the school.

Valuables & Personal Items Students are reminded not to bring valuable personal items to school. We are
unable to replace or guarantee the well being of items such as computer games,
cell phones, iPods, collector’s cards, skateboards and toys in general. Leaving
these items at home also allows for more focus and success with the important
task of learning and achieving at school.
Playground and Supervision After School
P A G E 3 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 6
We love to see the community using the playground after school; however, parents are
responsible for supervising their own children who stay to play on the yard after our 3:05
p.m. dismissal. There is no supervision by staff at that time in the playground. Please do not
have your children running around the building into the YMCA supervised setting as they are
actively running their own after school program.
The rush of cars, buses and children arriving at school can create many dangers. Everyone
plays a role in ensuring the safety of children when they are going back and forth to school.
This year we have three mini vans; therefore, please be aware of the additional traffic and
avoid parking in the “bus only” area. Use the parking lot across the street to ease the
congestion, particularly around the southern parking lot closest to the Kindergarten yard.
Drivers, to keep kids safe in the school zone:
Reduce your speed and be ready to stop at all times
Avoid distractions (i.e. Cell Phones)
Drive cautiously and follow the rules (even when you are late!)
Be patient and wait for children to complete their crossing before proceeding

Author Visit - Rukhsana Khan On May 3rd our whole school was visited by Rukhsana Khan the author of The Red Lollipop and many
other titles. We were treated to an amazing visit coupled with an dramatic and interactive reading of The Red Lollipop to highlight our Education Week from May 2nd - 6th!
Are you Moving? The process of preparing for a new school year involves predicting student enrolment and
structuring of the organization of classes and teachers to match enrolment. At this time we ask
that families assist us in these preparations by informing the office (in writing) if you are moving
out of the J.L.R. Bell PS area. Please include that last day of attendance and the new school your
child(ren) will be attending. This will help facilitate the transfer of your child(ren)’s OSR (Ontario
Student Record) to their new school for September.
Also, if you know of any families that will be moving in our area with school aged children please
direct them to J.L.R. Bell PS to register (if before June 26th), or they may register at the
Community Education Center located at 130 Carlson Dr., Newmarket. during the summer months.
Our school office will be closed from June 30, 2016 - August 29, 2016.
Thank you!
End of Year Medication Pick-up If you have provided the school with medication for your child (Epi-Pens, Puffers, Prescribed
medication, Over the counter medication etc) please remember to stop by the office to pick up
your medications by the last day of school. All expired medication will be discarded at the end
of the school year.
Lost & Found Please remember to check our Lost and Found
if your student is missing any items before the
end of the day on the last day of school. All
unclaimed items will be donated to a Goodwill
on June 29th, 2016.

Food Bank Volunteers Our Gr. 4/5 class had the opportunity to volunteer at the
Newmarket Food Pantry.. What an amazing and interesting
afternoon. We would like to thank the students for their
hard work and positive attitudes ! This valuable experience
has opened up many conversations in the classroom. Thank
you to all who donated food to the Gr. 4/5 Spring Food
Drive! We were able to donate 210 items to those in need.
Job Well Done !
On Thursday, May 14th the Staff and students enjoyed a special visit by a new family! Our
resident couple, Mr. & Mrs. Canada Goose introduced us to their new family of baby geese. Many of our JLR Bell students were able to see the new little geese (6 babies in total) as they
took their first little tour of our school yard. Some of our students were also lucky enough to watch them take their first leap of faith from the safety of their rooftop nest down to the
pavement below. We are happy to report that all 6 baby geese landed without harm. It was
spectacular to watch, although a bit scary! We are extremely proud of our wonderful students as they made sure to be respectful of the new family and gave the Geese space to
roam and made sure not to bother them.
Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart
On Friday May 13th, 2016 our JLR Bell students enthusiastically participated in Jump Rope or Hoops
for Heart! All grades were busy getting their hearts pumping and raising money and awareness for this important cause. In total our school raised over $ 1700.00. Way to go JLR Bell !

Track & Field
On Wednesday, May 25th and Thursday, May 26th our Special Needs students and our Grade 4 & 5
students participated in Track & Field meets. While we are proud of our students and their efforts during this fun filled athletic event, we are also very proud of their excellent behavior and
sportsmanship displayed while representing JLR Bell PS. Well done everyone! Our Grade 4 and 5 students will now move on to the area Track & Field Meet in Stouffville on Wednesday, June 15th.
Keep up the hard work and your training efforts, Grade 4’s and 5’s !!
Message from our Trustee
As the school year comes to a close, I would like to thank you for all that you have done to help make this
school year a successful one for our students.
We share a common goal - to give our young people every opportunity to reach their full potential, and we all have a role to play in supporting that goal. However you choose to get involved, your engagement and
support make a difference. We know that good schools become better schools when they are connected
with families.
Thanks to the ongoing efforts of our students, families, staff members and community partners, we are creating a welcoming, caring and inclusive learning environment that fosters student achievement and
well-being.
As we move into summer, I encourage you to seek out opportunities to continue and complement the
learning that takes place throughout the school year. That could mean taking a nature walk, visiting a museum or reading a book. Whatever your plans are over the next few months, I hope you have a safe,
relaxing and enjoyable summer.
All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being. On Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day. These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student suc-cess. As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the
morning of Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 only. Students will be dismissed
early that day at 11:35 a.m.. Arrangements will be made to ensure that
students who are normally bused to and from school will receive
transportation at this time. Parents/guardians whose children attend after
school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this
change in schedule.

Your School Council at Work!
As representatives of our school’s community, the Council provides a forum for discussion and advice on issues that effect our school – and, thus, our children. We also collectively help to organize school spirit activities and fundraising events that assist in providing classroom activities and equipment.
Here’s what happened in May:
The school was busy as always over the course of May…and it doesn’t show any sign of stopping in June!
Thank you for your continued support over the 2015-2016 School Year to help us with our goal of updating technology at JLR Bell J
We also held our final School Council meeting for this School Year, and we happy to say we are busy planning an even better 2016-2017! If you couldn’t make the meeting, but would like to have your say, please stop by our ‘Coffee with the Chair’ table on June 9th.
Upcoming Events
June 9 Coffee with the Chair
June 23 Beach Day
The final fundraising total for our Spring Family Night Out
back in April is $354.79.
