Purpose of this Evening
We are here to support you in preparing
your child for the first year of school!
Tonight we are setting the stage for that success.
Play-Based Learning
Play-Based Learning:
Playful and engaging while being very well-planned and purposeful. Planning begins with
knowing each young learner to allow us to respond with purposeful assessment and
instruction which is differentiated as needed.

The Kindergarten Program
The Ministry’s Kindergarten Program is a two-year continuum and addresses learning in: Children’s: Ø Personal and Social Development Ø Language (Literacy) Ø Mathematics Ø Science and Technology Ø Health and Physical Activity Ø The Arts
Children’s Personal and Social Development
a large and crucial portion of our curriculum and programming.
u Self-Awareness and Self-Reliance
u Social Relationships
u Awareness of Surroundings
Snacks and Lunches • Food allergies (no nuts or traces of nuts)
• Healthy & nutritious (fruit, cheese, yogurt, etc.)
• Easy to open & eat independently
• Litter-less lunches
• Prepare lunches & snacks together at night
• Lunch & Outdoor Play between 12:20pm and 1:20pm
Washroom and Self-Help Routines
• At school, children will: – Use the washroom (in the classroom) independently
– Wash hands with soap and water
– Dress and undress independently • belts, zippers, buttons • coat, boots, hats, mittens, shoes
• Extra clothing (including socks)
Dressing for Success • Indoor running shoes (non-marking for gym) • Backpack large enough to hold communication folders
Kindergarten Day What does the typical day look like? • Arrival & Dismissal in Kinder-yard • Morning routines • Playful learning • Outdoor Recess • Lunch • Physical Education
Arrival
• Drop off your child at the Kinder-Yard
(8:15am - 8:30am)
• Your child will line up outside the classroom with the Yard Supervisor
• Your child will enter the classroom & follow morning routines in the class
• Phoebe Gilman is a walking school
Dismissal • The bell rings at 3:00pm
• Students line up at the safety wall in the Kinder-Yard
• Teacher dismisses each child after making eye-contact with parent/ caregiver
• Parents/caregivers wait at fence
Supported Entry
• Your child’s first day of school will be in the morning until lunch:
8:25 – 12:20
• Students will line up to be dismissed near their Kinder-Yard gates at 12:20
First Day of School • Make the first day fun • Get up in time so you are not rushing • Be calm • Talk about the fun things (s)he will be doing • Take your child to the bus stop or to the school • Make sure your child gets to school on time and is
picked up on time
The first day of school is a big event in the life of a family, make it a positive one!
Saying Goodbye…
• Give your child a kiss and say goodbye
• Practise your goodbye routine ahead of time
• Reassure your child that you know (s)he’ll be okay and that you will be picking him/her up after school

– Bring your Kindergarten child to experience some activities that they will engage in at school
– Practise with materials in Kindergarten classrooms – Receive a bag of Kindergarten goodies!
• June 2nd: Meet a Kindergarten Educator Day 9:00 – 2:45 (Timeslots)
– Bring your child to meet a Kindergarten teacher – IF you not already done so, you may sign up for a time slot
