First trimester of new Information Literacy Skills ClassThe first trimester of our new Information Literacy Skills Class is now in session. Students in

this class are learning to become more comfortable in clearly defining a subject or area of

investigation, formulating a search strategy that encompasses various sources of informa-

tion, and analyzing the information collected for value, relevancy, and quality. Students arealso exploring how to use various forms of social media in the research process by experi-

menting with different presentation formats, online collaborative tools, and understanding

how one can use social media responsibly in an academic setting.

In library newsletters to come, there will be a “Social Media Corner” in which a new social media technology is profiled each month. This month,

we’re profiling Wikispaces.  Wikispaces is an online tool that can be used to build communities. With Wikispaces, groups have the freedom to

publish pages and discuss content with no real technical knowledge required. A great tool for collaboration in the research process, our Informa-

tion Literacy Skills class contributes to and discusses class assignments regularly on a wiki created specifically for our class.

For more information about Wikispaces, or to create your own class wiki, please visit:

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating

the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amend-

ment. Held during the last week of September, Banned

Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access

to information while drawing attention to the harms of cen-

sorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of

books across the United States.

Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information

and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might

be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the

foundation for Banned Books Week. BBW stresses the im-

portance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or un-

popular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access

them.

Some frequently challenged books include F. Scott Fitzger-

ald’s The Great Gatsby, J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye,

John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, Harper Lee’s To Kill A

Mockingbird, among many others!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our new summer reading program this year. I hope everyone en-

joyed their discussion groups! Our books have created a little bit of buzz among students and staff —please

consider donating those copies you no longer want to the UHS Library so we can share some great books!
