An Expansive Metropolitan ExperienceSaint Josephʼs University is closely allied with the entire

Philadelphia region. Due to its unique City Line location, studentsenjoy both a tranquil campus and ready access to the cityʼs diversepopulation, vibrant cultural life, major-league sports and entertain-ment, rich history and abundant professional opportunities.Philadelphia – the nationʼs sixth largest city and hub of theNortheast corridor – serves as a kind of alternate campus for SJUstudents.

Students take advantage of the city in many ways. Thanks to anextensive and supportive alumni network, they obtain internshipswith leading companies and other regional employers, take part incooperative learning programs and find rewarding positions in thecorporate, government and service sectors.

Center CitySJU's Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds.

The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes ofPhiladelphia's historic Main Line suburbs. Center Cityʼs cultural, commercial, and recreational activities are only a short ride away.

SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultur-al resources Philadelphia offers – the Philadelphia Museum of Art,the Franklin Institute Science Museum, and the Kimmel Center forthe Performing Arts, to name a few. In addition to rooting for theirbeloved Hawks, SJU students can be found cheering on the pro-fessional sports teams in the city, particularly the Eagles, Flyers,Phillies and 76ers.

Student-Athlete Services

Sports PsychologyAt Saint Josephʼs, there is an understanding

that reaching oneʼs athletic potential requiresmental as well as physical skills. With that inmind, the athletic department provides sportspsychology services for student-athletes,teams, and coaches, utilizing one of thenationʼs top sports psychologists, Dr. JoelFish.

Student-athletes have access to Dr. Fish todevelop mental skills for peak performance.Strategies are taught to help improve student-athlete confidence, composure, concentration, mental preparation, positive attitude, and clutch performance. Strategies are also designed to helpteams develop effective communication and teamwork.

Coaches have Dr. Fish as a sports psychology resource to helpwith team building, motivation, mental toughness, and helpingthem work with different personality types. Team captains andleaders are taught effective leadership skills such as positive peerpressure and conflict resolution.

Student-athletes can meet individually with Dr. Fish to discussoff-the-field issues, such as stress management and personalrelationships that are impacting upon athletic performance.Confidentiality is maintained in these individual meetings.Referrals, if indicated, are made to the University CounselingCenter.

Saint Josephʼs University recognizes that there is a connectionbetween a sound mind and a sound body. Sports psychology isan example of the Athletic Department providing its student-ath-letes, teams, and coaches with a valuable resource for successon and off the playing field.

Dr. Joel Fish

The Saint Josephʼs womenʼs basketball team is provided with all of the services needed to compete at the highest level:strength and conditioning, and sports psychology.

Strength and ConditioningThe Saint Josephʼs University Strength and

Conditioning philosophy is to create safe, pro-gressive and comprehensive strength and con-ditioning programs that prepare student-ath-letes to compete at the highest level. This isdone by designing sport-specific programs thatmaximize the student-athleteʼs performance. Each program is based on orthopedically safe, physiologically sound exercises and compre-hensive total body training. By systematicallyand progressively overloading the musclestrained and holding each athlete accountablefor each repetition of each exercise of everyworkout, the program ensures consistent gainsin strength and power. The focus is to teachthe athlete to produce maximal force and effortrepeatedly for within a given period of time.Additionally, by holding each athlete account-able and expecting them to train with intensityand focus, our program will also improve themental toughness of every athlete that istrained, giving them more confidence in difficultsituations.

SJU Tradition & Spirit

Why Hawk Hill?In the early 1920ʼs, former University president Albert G.

Brown, S.J., decided to move the college campus from itslocation just north of the city at 17th and Stiles to its currentsite on Philadelphiaʼs city line. He selected the location in partbecause its hilltop perch overlooking downtown Philadelphiaprovided a dramatic setting for the construction of the collegeʼsmain building, Barbelin Hall. In fact, for many years Barbelinʼssignature carillon tower ranked as the highest point from sealevel in the city of Philadelphia. Later, according to oral tradi-tion, students and faculty frequently saw real hawks circlingthe skies above Barbelin, before swooping down on their prey. The familiar scene eventually led to the coining of the moniker“Hawk Hill.”

Crimson and GrayThe college colors of crimson and gray date back to the

1890ʼs when it is related that a young seminarian leading apep rally saw the colors on a book he was holding. Thinkingthey looked attractive together, he announced that thesewould be the school colors.

“The Hawk Will Never Die!”The Hawk is one of the most famous mascots in the country,

best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its “wings”from tip-off to the final buzzer of every game, as well as for “fly-ing” in figure eights around the court during timeouts. The con-stant flapping, coupled with the scrappy play of the Universityʼsathletic teams, helped to spawn the schoolʼs familiar slogan“The Hawk Will Never Die!”

The Saint Josephʼs UniversityPep Band, under the direction ofTim Laushey (photo at right), ismade up of students from everyclass. They are often joined byother musicians who are alumni, friends and fans of the Hawks. When not leading the SJU band, his Tim Laushey Orchestra enter-tains many and backs numeroussingers on the East Coast.

Why S-a-i-n-t Josephʼs University? The corporate title “S-a-i-n-t” Josephʼs University, which has been in

place since Saint Josephʼs was granted university status by theCommonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the insti-tution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbreviation “St.”Josephʼs University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic con-texts.

The vast majority of academic and government publications havereferred to Saint Josephʼs University since at least 1986, as have mostcampus references with the exception of athletics. However, university-wide “image campaign” has revealed the need to clarify this policy bothinternally and externally.

According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized “St. Josephʼs” among the nationʼs col-leges and universities. Only one of them - Saint Josephʼs University,Philadelphia - is a university-level, Masterʼs I, NCAA Division I institution.A complete spelling of Saint Josephʼs University in all contexts will helpeliminate any confusion among higher education and other public con-stituencies.

Style information for print, electronic and digital media is available. Itincludes accepted abbreviations of the corporate name (e.g., “SJU” or “St.Joeʼs” in headlines or certain informal references) as well as prohibitedusages (e.g., partial abbreviations such as “St. Josephʼs” or “Saint Joeʼs”).
