St Joseph’s Newsletter Term 2 Week 3 16 May 2019 [email protected] www.sjndbb.catholic.edu.au Community ~ Respect ~ Compassion ~ Stewardship Term 1 Core Value: Respect School Rule: Use safe and caring hands and feet Respectful Relationships Focus: Settle an argument calmly Dear Parents I would like to inform you that I will be taking Long Service Leave from tomorrow (Friday 17 th May) returning to school on Monday 27 th May. As Mrs Cathy Gualtieri is already acting assistant principal whilst Brenda Paul is away there will be an acting principal at the school for next week. Mrs Sue Host is currently principal at one of our schools, OLPS in West Pymble. Sue is on a year’s leave and is happy to step in at Narrabeen for the week. I know you will make her welcome here at St Joey’s. NAPLAN Assessments This week our Year 3 and 5 students completed their NAPLAN assessments. For the first time in our diocese and for many schools across NSW this was an online assessment. You may have heard or read in the media reports of devices shutting down or freezing during tests. Fortunately we did not experience these issues apart from a short pause on the writing screen for some Year 5 children on the Tuesday. Walk Safely to School day- next Friday 17th May A reminder of this annual event across Australia to promote healthy lifestyle and walking safely. Meet Olivia Preston and Carmel Sekulich at the Pelican path at 8am if you would like to join the walking group. P&F Election Barbeque - Saturday 18th May The parish hall is once again being utilised as a polling booth for Saturday’s federal election. Our P&F president, Mark Page is organising a fundraising barbeque. This is an easy money spinner for the school that involves selling to the voters as they leave the polling booth, a captive market! At the moment all time slots are not filled. I understand that Saturday can be a very busy sport and activity day for families but if the time is shared among many then it means shorter commitment for all and not the usual band of people volunteering for a longer period. If you can spare 30 minutes to one hour to work on the barbeque please contact Mark Page on 0423 656 447. Spread the word to your neighbours to vote at St Joseph’s hall and partake of a yummy sausage sandwich! Winter Uniform Next Week As communicated via newsletter since last term, next week is official changeover to winter uniform. Please ensure your children are wearing the correct uniform including tie for the boys and tie tab for the girls. I have been assured by Lowes that they have supplies of all our uniform requirements for winter. For Sale We are clearing our computer lab of unused furniture in readiness to demolish the wall between the computer lab and Year 6 to create a flexible learning space for year 6 and other classes for STEM education and other large space activities. See photos at back of newsletter Grey plastic desk chairs on wheels- $10.00 each (22 available) Large rectangular computer desks - $20 each o 3 desks 1.5m wide x 1m deep o 7 desks 2m wide x 1m deep (can accommodate 2 people per desk) Slippery slide- FREE (would attach to elevated cubby house)

See attached flyer at the back of this newsletter. The Community of Catholic Schools has a fabulous website called “Walking the Way,” with many tips and upcoming events for parents. This Sunday is the 5th Sunday of Easter. Click on the link for a family reflection for this Sunday. http://sh1.sendinblue.com/7sjbehp7vsc.html?t=1557378367 Catherine Gualtieri - Religious Education Coordinator PARISH WEEKLY BULLETIN to view click here ALPHA AT THE LAKES website link here Message from Fr Borg regarding Parish Pastoral Council I would like parishioners to consider if they wish to be on the new Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). PPCs are one of the structures strongly recommended by the Bishops of the Second Vatican Council. The PPC is to assist the parish priest and the parish community in the Church’s apostolic work in the field of making the Gospel known. PPCs witness to the basic equality of dignity of all members by reason of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, highlighting the role of all to share in the Saving mission of Jesus. During the Easter Season our readings focus on the Acts of the Apostles and the growth of the Early Church after the Resurrection. It is a good time for our parish to look at how we grow our parish. So if you feel that is an appropriate way for you to focus your talents in the parish please contact the Parish Office and leave your details. I will have a gathering of those interested next month to open up more as to what the PPC can do for the parish and the commitment it will involve. Fr Robert
