Salute to YouthSome people may believe that a brass band with a 122-year history would only have grumpy old men within its ranks. While Woolston Brass does have a few senior members, it is the younger generation who are filling the band room as well as some of the principal seats. A quick head count reveals that the majority of the band members are under 40 years of age but more remarkable is that a third of all the players are under 23. (This is a statistic from the senior band not the Brass Academy.) So in this issue of The Woolstonian we aim to highlight our more youthful side, starting with a few words from 18-year-old Chris Broadbent on his highlights of the 2013 National Youth Band:

This year the National Youth Band was based in the far south in a little town called Roxburgh. The south did not disappoint with sunny, hot weather for the duration of the camp and large crowds in all three towns the band performed in.

This year the band was lucky to be in the presence of greatness, with Dr Robert Childs, the famous musician and probably the biggest name in brass banding around the world, coming to the camp. Dr Bob took master classes with some band members. It was incredible to watch him transform a solo from just a piece of music to a musical masterpiece, just by changing the dynamics and inspiring the musician to put feeling and passion into the music. He also took the band for a rehearsal and in just a short hour he managed to transform the band’s playing from good playing to brilliant playing by just talking for most of the rehearsal. Dr Bob’s influence on the band was amazing, just his presence in the room made the band step up and play brilliant music. I’m sure that many members and tutors took a lot out of what Dr Bob told the soloists and the band members.

Another excellent musician who the band was lucky enough to accompany was Byron (Buzz) Newton. Buzz is a world-class euphonium player and a former pupil of Dr Bob Childs at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Buzz played four pieces with the band backing him and all of these pieces impressed not only the audience but the band members as well. One piece of advice I heard on camp was “an amateur musician will practice till they get it right; a professional musician will practice till they don’t get it wrong”. I feel Buzz falls in the professional league for I never heard him split a note whether it was in the practice room or the concert. As well as being an incredible musician, Buzz also got involved in the physical activities with the band members. He took part in touch rugby, Frisbee and catch where he threw the ball as hard as he could at a slip cordon consisting of ten band members. It was unknown before this that Buzz is a very good cricket player and could actually throw the ball reasonably hard.

The National Youth Brass Band camp was a great learning experience for many members of the band and never fell below my expectations musically and socially. It was great to spend time with other keen young musicians from around the country.

Our congratulations to the Woolston members of 2013 National Youth Band of New Zealand: Miles Bennett, Chris Broadbent, Kyle Lawson, Cameron Lee, Jordan Seaton, Joel Williams, and Andrew Yorkstone.

Woolston Brass Academy Update from Kate Sander

Woolston Academy’s end of year celebration was held at the newly rebuilt pub The Twisted Hop relocated in the Woolston Village. A fitting location and many thanks to the owners and manager who are both involved with the Academy. The Junior Band and Concert Brass played to a full house and it was great to see lots of friends and family in the audience as well as many members of senior band who came along to support us and listen to the progress that has been made by all the players.

We took the opportunity to celebrate a record ten members of the Learners’ Group who are now ready to move on to Junior Band. Tutors Bill Vail, Emma Caunter and Dale Hounsome-Vail have clearly done a great job in preparing these new players for the band. In turn four cornet players from the Junior Band were promoted to Concert Brass.

After performances from both bands the following awards were presented: the Most Improved Player awards went to Zac Powell (Junior Band) and Geoff Drewett (Concert Brass) and Bandsperson of the Year to Martin Bennett (Concert Brass) and the Wilson/Sanders family (Junior Band).

The evening’s special award went to Dale Hounsome-Vail who has been with the Academy for ten years, having started as an eight-year-old on baritone in the Junior Band. Dale played an excerpt from Doodallyanastics and left to huge applause as he sets off to Wellington to study music. We wish him all the best.

The evening ended with thanks to the tutors and to Jill Pears, conductor of the Junior Band, and Steve Chapman of Concert Brass for their hard work, patience and dedication throughout the year. Steve in turn thanked everyone for their support during his tenure as conductor having recently resigned to concentrate on his new position as Head of Music at Christchurch Boys’ High School.

All in all, the Academy has had a very successful year. Many thanks to all involved, including all the parents of players who work away in the background. We are looking forward to another great year with several engagements already booked.

We offer an open invitation to all to come along to listen to the bands on any Tuesday night during the school term. The Junior Band and Learners Group run from 6.30 pm with the Concert Brass practicing from 7.30 to 9.00 pm. The Junior Band would in particular welcome any experienced players who are willing to sit in and help. Just bring your instrument and take a seat!

A word from Nick JohnsonHi everyone, I just wanted to say how pleased I am to take over the baton of Concert Brass. Having been in New Zealand now for over three years this opportunity has come at the right time for me. Before moving here I spent 23 years in the British military band system ending up as Bandmaster to the Band of the Welsh Guards in London, performing at many high-profile state and ceremonial events and enjoying some great overseas tours. Upon completing my service I returned to University and undertook a one year Post Graduate Teaching Diploma in primary education. Subsequently I spent one year as a Year 1 (five and six-year-olds) classroom teacher during which I was planning, along with my wife Jill and our two boys, our ‘escape’ to New Zealand and a job with the NZ Army Band.

My role with the Army Band is to look after the School of Music where, along with another Woolstonian Callum Hewson, we currently train four overseas students from Samoa and Tonga as well as overseeing the musical development of the regular Army Band members.

Jill has recently returned to playing the euphonium and is a member of Addington Brass although enticing our boys into the world of music and specifically brass isn’t proving so easy!

In my spare time I am currently training for the Christchurch Marathon in June, I support the Crusaders and Provincial Canterbury Rugby teams and follow Gillingham Football Club (who!?) in the English Football League.

I’m certainly looking forward to my tenure with Concert Brass, maintaining and building on the band’s recent successes and just enjoying the whole process of making some good music.

A Whistle-Stop TourDuring one of Adrienne, Lady Stewart’s brass band inspired tours to Britain she had a chance meeting with the Whistling World Champion, David Morris. She was enthralled by his skill and knew that he would delight audiences in New Zealand and so began a plan to do just that.

David Morris and his wife Helen arrived in Christchurch on Thursday 14 March for the second stop of their New Zealand tour. Having performed with the Marlborough District Brass Band to a very enthusiastic audience the night before, David was certainly pleased with the start of his Whistle-Stop Tour. Met at the airport by the morning team from The Breeze radio station, Peter Mac and Hilary Muir, David gave a delightful interview and demonstrated his whistling skill with great aplomb.

On Saturday evening our Whistle-Stop Tour concert was held at the Performing Arts Centre at Middleton Grange High School. This is a new venue for Woolston Brass to play in and proved to be an excellent facility for such an event. Musical Director Graham Hickman had chosen a challenging and varied programme for the concert which included many new works.

Peter Graham’s Summon the Dragons and Lady Stewart’s Air opened the programme. Principal cornet Kyle Lawson then showed his skill in the cornet solo Virtuosity which was followed by The Ecstasy of Gold by Ennio Morricone. Guest artist David Morris was then welcomed to the stage to perform a speedy version of Trumpet Triplets followed by the ever-popular Londonderry Air - commonly known as Danny Boy. David’s whistling skill is certainly amazing and brought cheers of delight from the audience. The band closed the first half of the concert with Visions of Kolkhis by Tom Davoren.

During the interval David was out in the foyer meeting the audience who were keen to buy his CDs. At least two young lads said to David “You’re really good at whistling.”

Sonic Boom by Dave Collins, which featured the lower end of the band, opened the concert’s second half. Principal euphonium Davey Boyes then gave a fantastic performance of the difficult solo Sparta by Peter Meechem.

Another new work for the band, King of King’s by Miklos Rosza was followed by the return to the stage of our guest artist. David’s version of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables certainly showed his musical sensitivity and proves that the original feeling of the song can be expressed through whistling. David then delighted the audience with Czardas which is his signature piece since performing it to win the World Whistling Championships.

As a little twist, the piece was performed a second time as a duet when David was joined by our trombone player Anthony Bracegirdle. Anthony doesn’t whistle but he had taught himself to play Czardas on his teeth. (Yes, really!) This rather unusual duet combination went down a treat with the audience.

The band’s final item was three movements from Peter Graham’s War of the Worlds which featured a lovely flugel horn and tenor horn duet in the second movement played beautifully by Sarah Hickman and Callum Hewson.

Out and AboutIt has certainly been a busy start to the year for all of the Woolston Bands. The first event for Woolston Brass was a delightful afternoon concert in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens on Sunday 10 February as part of the City Council SummerTimes events programme. Families and picnic baskets abounded as the audience enjoyed the sunny weather and the band’s performance. Well done to Sarah Hickman for a great debut performance of Brooklyn, a jazz/punk-inspired flugel horn solo written by the Youngblood Brass Band from the USA.

Two weeks later saw the band entertain at the Flaxwood Festival. In its third year now the festival is a wonderful day of musical entertainment from a wide variety of groups including The Wolverines from Australia and Roy Phillips, the voice of the UK band The Peddlers. Woolston received a fantastic response to its programme. Special mention must be made of our vocalists David Fiu and Caroline Blackmore who were both in exceptional form. The festival is more than a great day out - it is a fundraiser with the money raised this year going to support St John, The One-2-One Charitable Trust and us. Our thanks to Adrienne, Lady Stewart, the patron of the festival, and Carolyn Schuitman on whose property the event is held for all the work they do in organization of the festival.

The Woolston Concert Brass and Junior Band also started their year with a City Council SummerTimes concert. Held on Sunday 10 March at the Scarborough Reserve in Sumner, this was of course Nick Johnson’s first outing as conductor of Woolston Concert Brass.

The concert concluded with an encore from David of Hine e Hine and Stars and Stripes Forever.

Our sincere thanks go to David Morris who is a truly professional performer and a definite crowd pleaser, to Adrienne, Lady Stewart whose enthusiasm and patronage ensured the concert went ahead, and to the enthusiastic audience members who showed they thoroughly enjoyed the whole concert programme.

At bit about David Morris

David began his musical career at the age of 13 as a cornet player with Saddleworth Brass Band, in West Yorkshire. He went on to play principal cornet and became the Cornet Champion of Great Britain. David then performed with the highly acclaimed ensembles Kings of Brass and Virtuosi Brass of Great Britain. He has also been the Musical Director of many northern bands, leading them to national competition finals and championships.

David used to whistle occasionally as a party piece. When this led to a strong demand for concert performances he decided to record his first CD, Whistling Down the Wind. After winning the title of “World Champion Whistler” in 2003 he released his second album backed by the Scottish Co-op Brass Band. Both CDs have enjoyed buoyant sales. Since turning professional, David has made ten visits to the USA appearing in concerts in Chicago and St Louis, as well as performing in New Zealand and Malta. He has toured throughout the UK and has performed on two occasions with the BBC Concert Orchestra and also with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Dublin. These orchestral experiences persuaded him to record his third CD, Classical Whistling.

Player Profile Georgia Hoy is another young member of Woolston who has joined us on Baritone from Woolston Concert Brass, which highlights the fantastic job our Academy does teaching and nurturing players who can move up through the levels to Woolston Brass.

When did you start playing Baritone and why? Do you play any other instruments?

My whole family is involved in brass bands so I think I begged my parents for a baritone for my 6th birthday. I had my first lesson in the back of the Woolston band room with Mr Gallagher when I was six years and one week old. I now also play Trombone at school.

Have you always been playing in brass bands? What sort of musical groups have you been involved in?

As well as Woolston, I play in the Big Band, Orchestra and Burnslide (a trombone trio) at Burnside High School, and I am principal trombone of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra.

Why do you like being a part of Woolston Brass? What does it mean to you to be a Woolstonian?

I love being a part of the Woolston family and being around so many people who have the same love of brass as I do. Being a Woolstonian is also special to me because I am a third generation Woolstonian; my dad, nana and grandad are all life members of the band.

Favourite piece of music and why?

Birdland, because I like all things jazz with a big brassy sound.

What is the highlight of your musical career so far?

My highlights include moving up from Woolston Concert Brass to Woolston Brass, winning the Under 19 Baritone solo at the last national contest [Timaru 2012] and travelling to Melbourne last year with my school orchestra to work with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Whenever I have spare time I spend it hanging out with my friends and family or just cruising the internet.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time with life/brass bands?

I will definitely still be involved in brass bands, but I could be anywhere, I have no idea yet.

Any advice for the next generation of brass players?

Even if you get braces, it might be quite sore for a bit, but push on because you’ll be a better player for it!Eb bass player and rising star vocalist Joel Williams

Euphonium player Patrick McCarthy and his bonnie bride Elizabeth McTaggart were married on Paddy’s family farm in Galatea in the Bay of Plenty on the 28th December 2012. Elizabeth was handed over by her mother, Susan. Two of Elizabeth’s ten siblings attended, Mysie (who piped her down

Round the BandstandOur heartiest congratulations to the Woolston players who have been selected for the 2013 National Brass Band of New Zealand: Kyle Lawson (cornet), Joel Williams (BBb bass) and percussionist Todd Turner. Our musical director Graham Hickman has also made the band in the lowly position as the third 3rd cornet, but more importantly has been invited to be the assistant to the musical director, Dr Robert Childs. It is planned for the National Band to meet in October to prepare for a tour to China - subject to funding and logistics.

Kyle and Joel had a very busy summer as both players were part of the Australian National Youth Band prior to joining the New Zealand equivalent. Joel, being an Australian, was selected for the band while Kyle was invited to take part as the guest soloist.

Graham Hickman was also busy over the summer taking in some professional development. Graham attended a two-day conducting school in Wellington. The school was led by Jerry Nowak, Professor Emeritus of Music at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania. With over 860 published compositions and arrangements for instrumental and vocal ensembles, Jerry is one of the most widely published composers and arrangers of the past 40 years.

Our champion Drum Major Graeme Bremner also did a bit of training recently attending a Drum Majors’ workshop run by the Brass Bands Association. No doubt Graeme is very keen to get started on training the band for the national contest.

Bass player extraordinaire Phil Johnston represented New Zealand at the Ern Keller Memorial solo competition held at the St Mary’s Band Club, Sydney in February. As the winner of the New Zealand Champion of Champions, Phil received an invitation to compete alongside representatives from Japan, all Australian states and the Australian Champion of Champions. Woolston Life Member Kevin Joughin was also competing representing South Australia. Both Phil and Kevin were accompanied on the piano by Jill Pears. Eighteen-year-old Sydney-based euphonium soloist Jonathon Ramsay won the event.

It was a pleasure to see two former band members back in the band room recently. Trevor Wilson, a cornet player with the band in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s called in recently to have a quick catch-up and to return some uniform items that may have been in his possession for the last 15 or so years. A tenor horn was quickly found for Rosanna Dale when she walked into the band room. Rosie is now working in the mining region of Western Australia and was here in Christchurch on holiday. Since she gave a bit of notice of her visit an evening out was able to be arranged and many of the band enjoyed a get-together in Rosie’s honour at the Thai Orchid in Riccarton. (Thanks to Davey Boyes for organizing the event)

Cornet player Louise Moroney celebrated her 21st birthday on the 11th of March. Sarah Hickman also celebrated a special birthday in March, her 30th, with a party for the whole band two years after the event. Sarah’s original party plans were put on hold after the major earthquake in February 2011. Congratulation also to Sarah on her appointment to a fulltime teaching position at Heathcote Valley Primary School.

And coming up soon, principal bass player Nigel Seaton is to celebrate his 40th birthday with an event at the Rangiora Golf Club. Nigel really loves his golf!

Ace percussionist Roanna Funckle (nee Cooper) has given birth to a son. Kieran was born on the 25th of February, five weeks early at 1940g. All three family members are home now and thriving!

There have been a number of milestones for our band members in the last few month and we pass on our congratulations to those involved.

Cornet player and former Concert Brass conductor Steve Chapman and April Holland were married on 10th of March. Steve has recently been appointed as the Head of Music at Christchurch Boys’ High School. April, also a school teacher, plays the cornet in Woolston Concert Brass.

Miles Bennett was appointed Head Boy of Lincoln High School.

Georgia Hoy was selected for the Christchurch Youth Orchestra and has since been appointed the principal trombone.

Chris Broadbent has been accepted into pilot training school and begins his studies in June.

Our thoughts have been with former members Gary Bilton and Kevin Jarrett recently. Both Kevin and Gary have been seriously ill in recent months. We are pleased to report that they are now on the mend.

John Thorne has officially retired from the workforce. Although he too is on the sick list and has only recently returned home from hospital after surgery, John remains a vital member of the band’s management committee. John hopes to have recovered sufficiently to perform with Woolston Concert Brass at the contest in New Plymouth.

Evan Arrington-Tsao, was a member of Woolston Concert Brass from 2007-2009. Evan, who now lives in the United States of America, will graduate from Cedar Shoals High School (Athens, Georgia)in May, 2013.

Evan has been accepted into the Bachelors degree programme through the School of Music at the University of Georgia. He will be majoring in Music Education (specialising in brass conducting and performance). Evan would like to hear from his WCB friends through email as follows:

Our Marketing Manager Helen Hoy has accepted an appointment as the Executive Officer of the BBANZ (Brass Bands Association of New Zealand). The shifting north of Helen’s well-proven administrative skills will be a great loss to us, but a great gain to the banding movement in New Zealand, so we have to be philosophical! Helen was presented with a bouquet of flowers at the recent Seat Patrons’ event. Band President Tony Lewis thanked Helen for her sterling service to the band. She will be greatly missed by all at Dampier Street, but we wish her well in her new role.

Former Woolston cornet player Barrett Hocking is making quite a name for himself these days since graduating from London’s Royal Academy of Music in 2010. Now firmly established in the professional scene, Barrett is perhaps best known these days as member of Wellington dub/funk/soul fusion band The Black Seeds, though he also works as a teacher and freelances in the brass sections of Orchestra Wellington, the NZSO and the APO.

All the other food was cooked and prepared by family, including a wedding cake that took 70 hours to make! The reception was held in NZ Army tents, and the music was “open mic” (though based on and around army dance band members) and bagpipes. Elizabeth will be joining us on stage playing her bagpipes at our forthcoming Anzac concert.
