NEWS RELEASE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION 1520 H STREET, NORTHWEST . WASHINGTON 25. D . C . TELEPHONES: DUDLEY 2-6325 . EXECUTIVE 3-3260 FOR RELEASE: PM's Monday October 1 6 ; 1961 Release No . 61-227 SCOUT DEVELOPMENT AN D IONOSPHERE PROBE EXPERIMENTS The National Aeyonautics a n d Space Administration will soon launch the seventh i n a developmental series of Scout rockets. The Scout i s a four-stage, solid fueled rocket under development to provide the United States with a small, r e - liable a n d flexible research vehicle for a variety o f space explorations tasks. Coupled with this launch will be a 94 pound payload, P-21, designed to explore the physical phenomena i n the upper ionosphere. Th e ionosphere i s a continuum of electrically charged, or ionized regions, beginning some 4 0 miles above t h e earth and extending several hundred miles out, gradually merging with outer space. LAUNCH WHICLE Scout i s t h e nation's first solid propellant rocket to place a payload i n orbit. I t d i d s o on February 16, 1961, when i t sent aloft Explorer I X , a 12-foot, aluminum an d plastic: sphere to collect data on effects atmospheric drag will have o n space vehicles a nd the life of satellites. Scout i s designed to place a 150-pound satellite i n a 300-mile orbit or to send a 50-pound scientific package nearly 8,500 miles i n a probe shot. For re-entry tests, the rocket can subject a payload to conditions like those encountered by space vehicles returning to the earth's atmosphere. I n a ballistic tradectory, i t can provide almost two hours of weightlessness for 100-pound experiments. Scout is 72 feet long a n d weighs approximately 36,600 pounds. first stage, Castor second, Antares third an d Altair fourth. I ts four solid-propellant stages consist o f Algol These four rocket motors, plus the necessary tran- sition sections and guidance and control equipment, are assembled into a complete vehicle by t h e Astronautics Division of Chance Vought Corporation, aerospace subsidiary
