If you are concerned now with a lack of progress reflected on your student’s report card, reach out to the teachers now. The district expectation is that teachers post homework on School Loop, and that grades are updated at each progress report deadline and quarter’s end for a total of eight times per year or every four weeks. Many teachers update far more regularly than that. Check pages deeper in this newsletter for all the after -school assistance available for your student. I am looking forward to cooler mornings, Homecoming floats, the WHS Foundation’s annual campaign, our annual College Day, and end of daylight savings time on Sunday, November 6th. Your student is busy as first quarter ends in mid-October (Fri, Oct 21), and it’s not too far ahead to rec- ord finals dates on your household calendar; the semester ends in December, and students sit for finals before winter break, December 16 – 21 (Fri, Mon, Tue, Wed). We do not give early finals, so book and re-check your winter break plans accordingly. 2 October 2016 Communicat

No vamos

esos eventos.

Athletics Corner

Woodside will soon be enjoying a host of new facilities, including a

new track, softball fields, a STEM Building, and a revitalized Bradley

Field and stadium. However, these improvements have not come

without sacrifice and patience from a number of our athletic teams.

Our softball teams were displaced for the last week and a half of their

season in the Spring, and this Fall the tennis team has battled isola-

tion and dusty courts as the field revitalization and STEM Building begins to take shape. However, no program has sac-

rificed more than our football teams, who were displaced from their field for the entire summer, and during the week

and a half of double sessions hopped on a bus to practice at Sequoia, arriving back at Woodside after 11pm. The foot-

ball gods have smiled on our Varsity for their selfless behavior, as their season has begun with three straight wins, in-

cluding a victory over Hillsdale, a CCS finalist last year.

Please welcome new coaches to our fall sports, Rebecca Wheeler for Girls Tennis, Shelbie Higginson for Boys Varsity

Water Polo (Shelbie coached JV last year), Joe Reich for Frosh Volleyball, and David Hartford and Kelsey Theriault on

campus assistants for Cross Country with their fellow social studies colleague, veteran coach Pablo Aguilera.

A very big THANK YOU to our amazing Athletic Boosters Organization that raised more than $20,000 through fall

team donations, thank you President Eric McCrystal and all the members of that organization who work so hard to make

sure our teams have the proper equipment and uniforms.

Let’s have a great 2016-17 - go ‘Cats!!!!

The sound of Woodside is in full swing. All programs are sounding great, from the

Marching Band in the stands, to both Jazz Programs and Orchestra, all students are

making things happen within the program. Come on out and see and support our groups

performing locally at PortFest, on the 1st of October. Marching Band will be performing

their annual half-time show at Homecoming on the 14th, and then off to the Santa Cruz

Band Review at the Boardwalk on the 15th. We will also be

performing at the Selby Lane Halloween Parade. Our Jazz group

will be performing at the CSM Jazz Festival in November. All groups will be performing during

Hometown Holidays on the 3rd of December in Redwood City. Our Annual Music Department

Winter Concert will be on the 8th. The music boosters are always looking for volunteers to assist

in aiding the programs. Please contact Eric Nodine at [email protected] if you have any

questions.

Woodside Parent Education Series – Fall Events!

Charlene Margot, Director, The Parent Education Series

On Thursday, September 29 (7:00 pm, WHS PAC), the Woodside Parent Education Series offers a showing of the

new documentary Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age. With insights from authors, psychologists, and

brain scientists, Screenagers reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults

can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. This powerful new film is a great conversa-

tion-starter for the entire family.

On October 26 (7:00 pm, WHS PAC), the Series welcomes Maria Furtado, Executive Director of Colleges That

Change Lives. In a presentation filled with humor, warmth, and compassion, Ms. Furtado helps students and fami-

lies better understand the college admissions process to find the best college “fit.” Maria has personally counseled

thousands of students about college choice, and she is a sought-after national presenter. For more information

about CTCL, go to http://ctcl.org/ Parents and students welcome!

Parent Education Series events are free and open to parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members.
