    In the election concluded on 28 February 2015, Dr Thomas H C Cheung is re-elected as Chairman of the Board for a term of three years from 20 March 2015 to 19 March 2018. The Board also noted Mr John K H Lees appointment as representative of the Council on the Board with effect from 1 March 2015 and for the period as long as Mr Lee remains a member of the University Council.

    More than two hundred secondary school teachers and students from Jiangman and Liannan, Guangdong Province visited the College on 23 March 2015, accompanied by College alumnus Dr Leung Ping-wah. Mr Tony M H Chan, Assistant College Secretary, received the delegation and introduced College system, student activities, hostels and amenities facilities of United College, while Dr Siu Kam-wah, Member of Committee on Alumni Affairs and Development, delivered a talk on the Stories of Guangdong Overseas Chinese for the delegation. Students from Guangdong also presented Yao ethnic songs and dance and College students led them to tour around hostel and campus.

    The 2014-2015 United College Scholarship Presentation Ceremony was held on 24 March 2015 at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Dr Thomas H C Cheung, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees was the officiating guest. Also gracing the Ceremony were various scholarship donors and trustees of the College. Around five hundred guests, including the award recipients, their parents, alumni, secondary school principals of the award recipients and members of the College were present. Tea reception and dinner were hosted by the College after the Ceremony for the award recipients, their parents and the donors respectively.

    United College, Chung Chi College and Wu Yee Sun College jointly invited Ms Larine Chung to be the Hop Wai Visiting Fellow in Art and Culture 2014-2015. A series of art activities had been organised during her visit from 13 March to 14 April 2015, including Drawing Workshop - Learning drawing from Renaissance masters, Watercolor Workshop - Daily sketching with watercolor, Larine Chung 2015 Home-coming Exhibition and Seminar Reflection: Looking Back to My Art Journey, in which she shared her experience on art with the audience.

    The activities are sponsored by Hop Wai Arts and Cultural Development Fund.

    Supported by Musicus Society, United College and Jonathan K S Choi Foundation will jointly present theMusic Encounter Series Cellist Trey Lee, on Friday, 17 April 2015 at 6:00 pm at Lecture Theatre 6, Lee Shau Kee Building. All UC staff and students are welcome! Mr Trey Lee is the Artistic Director of Musicus Society. He is the first Asian who won the International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition. He also works with esteemed conductors and orchestras worldwide. Mr Lee was hailed a miracle by GRAMOPHONE.

    The annual I CARE Floral Festival was held during March and April 2015 in The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). As one of the many activities held during the Festival, CUHK has invited Taiwanese writer Liu Ka-shiang to visit the lawn of United College, telling stories and giving inspiration from his creative life.

    The Joint College Student Union Inauguration Ceremony of Chung Chi, New Asia, United, Shaw, Morningside, S H Ho, Lee Woo Sing, Wu Yee Sun, and C W Chu Colleges was held at LT6, Lee Shau Kee Building on 31 March 2015. Honorable guests included Professor Dennis Ng, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor and University Dean of Students; Mr Raymond Leung, Director of Student Affairs; Heads, Masters and Dean of Students of respective Colleges.     Application for the United College Shum Choi Sang E-mentorship Programme (Year of Thomas H C Cheung 2015-2016) has been started on 13 April 2015. The aim of this Programme is to provide guidance and support to students studying abroad through the help of overseas mentors in the countries of their visits. This programme will run from July to April in the following year.

    All UC students who have been accepted for enrolment in a regular-term overseas exchange programme in 2015-2016 organized by the Office of Academic Links, his/her academic departments or by the College are welcome to apply.     To strengthen the relationship between the College and the Universitys teaching hotel (Hyatt Regency Shatin), both Professor Barley Mak, Associate College Head and Dean of Students; and Mr Wilson Lee, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Shatin encouraged exchange opportunities and interaction between the two parties. Accompanied by Professor Lee Hung-kay, Associate Dean of General Education and Mr Raymond Y M Luk, Part-time Lecturer of the College General Education Programme, Professor Barley Mak led a group of GEUC2017 Bacchus: Exploring Grape Wine students and members of the Universitys Wine Society visited Hyatts Tin Tin Bar on 4 March 2015. Mr Wilson Lee, also carries the title of Adjunct Professor in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, shared his personal collection of wines and arranged Ms Connie Chan, Assistant Director of Food and Beverage, to share knowledge and experience in the F&B industry.     When Cantonese meets Putonghua was held during 17 and 25 March 2015. Ms Chan Ning, Lecturer of Department of Chinese Language and Literature and Mr Kelvin C L Chan, Lecturer of Yale-China Chinese Language Centre were invited to be the host of the programme. Students practiced their Cantonese and Putonghua in making Serradura and through other activities.

    A forum on What is Beauty? was held on 27 March 2015 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Three speakers including Professor Eva Man, Executive Associate Dean of Graduate School, Professor in Humanities & Creative Writing, Hong Kong Baptist University; Mr Charles Ng, Founding Chairman of Hong Kong Brands Association; and Dr Leung Mee-ping, Assistant Professor of Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, hosted the forum.

    From the prospective of humanities and philosophy, Professor Eva Man pointed out that beauty was a perfect expression of affection. Mr Charles Ng demonstrated on how physical qualities became affection qualities and then emerged to the meaning to consume with real brand names as an experience of beauty. Dr Leung Mee-ping, from the angle of art, explained the experiences of beauty with visual materials and video clips.

    The Annual Dinner for UC Sports Teams, a happy gathering of ten round tables with hot pot food, was held on 27 March 2015 at the College Staff Common Room. Professor Jimmy C M Yu, College Head, delivered encouraging words to sport team members and appreciated their great efforts during the year. Professor Stephen H S Wong, Associate College Head, Professor Barley Mak, Associate College Head and Dean of Students, Mrs Christina Li, College Secretary, Mr Tony M H Chan, Assistant College Secretary and teachers from the College PE Unit: Dr Chan Tak-yau, Mr Wong On-tung, Dr Lau Kwok-on and Ms Crystal K Y Cheung joined the dinner as well. At the dinner, members of the UC Sports Association hosted a number of interesting games and lucky draw for participants. The gathering was full of joy and fun.

    Elementary Calligraphy was held during 23 January and 27 March 2015. The program was hosted by Professor Chan Hung-kan, College alumnus. Technique on writing regular script was introduced during the sessions. Students wrote red banners before Chinese New Year for celebration.

    A College Assembly was held on 13 March 2015 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, with Mr Wilson Kwok, a celebrity in food and wine tasting, delivered a talk on Food Culture in Hong Kong. This Assembly was specially arranged as a Salute to Mrs Pearl Kong Chen who passed away in July 2014. Mrs Chen was the beloved wife of our Former College Head Professor Chen Tien-chi. She was a well-known expert in cooking and was the author of a great n umber of publications. Mrs Chen was being described as the number one person in the food culture in Hong Kong. Mr Wilson Kwok had a very close relationship with Mrs Chen. In 2009, he was invited to plan and host a series of TV programmes on food culture which was well received by the audience. In the talk, Mr Kwok introduced to our students the change of food culture under different historical background of Hong Kong from a cultural prospective. A souvenir was presented to Mr Wilson Kwok by Professor Jimmy C M Yu, College Head, with the company of Professor Barley Mak, Associate College Head and Dean of Students.

    A Farewell Assembly organised by the 2012 Class Society to farewell the graduating students was held on 30 March 2015 at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. More than nine hundred students attended this Assembly. A photo show and videos were presented for the fond memory of College life for fellow students. To express their heartfelt thanks to the College, students of the 2012 Class Society prepared two handicraft gifts (with paper-folded hearts) on behalf of all graduating students, to be presented to the College. The gifts were received by Professor Jimmy C M Yu, College Head and Professor Barley Mak, Associate College Head and Dean of Students.

    From 2005, the College and the Alumni Association have jointly organised a series of alumni talks for students. Distinguished alumni from all walks of life are invited to share with fellow students on their career and life experiences. The Alumni Talk is organised in the format of high table dinner, providing students and alumni a relaxing atmosphere for learning and communication.

    The 19th Alumni Talk was held on 18 March 2015 at the Staff Common Room, 3/F, Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities

    Building, United College. The guest speaker, Ms Gloria Chan Kwong-wai, Board Member, Mdecins Sans Frontires (HK), shared with UC students on the topic of "Don't Accept Fate! In Search of Hope Among Regret. Ms Chan is a 1997 United College alumna, majoring in School of Journalism and Communication.

  • ASR Members Gathered to Celebrate Spring Time

    Adam Schall Residence (ASR) held the New Year and ASR Reunion Banquet on 6 March 2015. Over a hundred staff members, ASR alumni and residents gathered together and spent a happy and warm evening enjoying Poon Choi food at the ASR Multipurpose Hall. During the banquet, the incumbent Residents Association, AdamSHELTer performed dancing while other hostel groups had music performance. Alumni of different cohorts were invited to come and celebrate the Chinese New Year together. The distribution of red packets by the God of Wealth and the exciting lucky draw brought the whole evening to climax.

    The annual Music Concert of Bethlehem Hall (BH) was held on 11 March 2015 at the common area of Bethlehem Hall. This concert was co-organised by the Warden and the Resident Tutors of BH. There are multivariate music performed in that evening, including singing solo, mixed-voice chorus and instrument ensemble were performed. Over thirty audiences, including residents, tutors and alumni, shared the cheerful and warm music.

    Being the Honorary Advisor of UC Toastmasters Club for ten years, Professor Helen Wise, School of Biomedical Sciences, will retire from CUHK in coming July. The club specially presented a flower bouquet and a handmade card for Professor Wise to show their gratitude for Professor Wises continuous support and assistance.

    The Hang Seng Hall Residents Association organised the annual High Table Dinner on 25 March 2015 at the College Staff Common Room. Professor Joseph J Y Sung, the Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was invited as the speaker to share his life and working experience.     The UC Bun Organising Committee, formed under the College Student Union, arranged two events in March of 2015, including Room Escape and Electronic Game Competition. The theme for Room Escape was Story, No Mercy and there were about four hundred and fifty students taken the challenge between 16 and 20 March 2015 in the rooms of Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building. The final match of the Electronic Game Competition was live broadcasted and commented in the evening of 24 March 2015 at the open space outside Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building, and the two chosen games were League of Legends and FIFA 15 for the competition. A night market style carnival - with food, games and accessory booths, was also organised at the venue.

    The UC Bun activities were joyfully completed with the final match of Electronic Game Competition cum Carnival.

  • Tea Gathering for Student Organisations 3 20

    The College hosted a tea reception for all newly formed executive committee members of student organisations on 20 March 2015 at the College Staff Canteen of Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building. The purpose of the activity was to allow student leaders knowing each other and briefly introduce their key activities throughout the year. Fifty-five student leaders attended the reception, including the College Student Union Executive Committee and Council, hostel residents associations, non-residential halls, affiliated interest groups and departmental societies. College representatives included Professor Jimmy C M Yu, College Head; Professor Barley Mak, Associate College Head and Dean of Students; Professor Lee Hung-kay, Associate Dean of General Education; Mrs Christina Li, College Secretary; Mr Tony M H Chan, Assistant College Secretary; and the College Development Officers. They expressed concerns on the activities to be organised in the coming year, and the Colleges gratitude towards the executive committee members in serving their fellow students.

    CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia Environment and Climate Change Forum Series: Biodiversity Conservation

    In order to draw on collective wisdom and to encourage active public participation in pro-environment activities, CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia organizes the Environment and Climate Change Forum Series with funding support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Experts and practitioners from different fields and the public are involved to confer on the best ways to deal with environmental challenges and impacts of climate change. At this forum, Mr Simon Chan will discuss the significance of biodiversity and how to conserve local biodiversity. Dr Billy Hau and Mr George Jor will respond and comment. In addition, there will be a Question and Answer Session for participants to raise questions or comments. The forum will be conducted in Cantonese. Admission is free on first-come first-served basis.     Lunar New Year Lunch Gathering of UC Staff Association

    A joyful Lunar New Year Lunch Gathering was held on 5 March 2015 at the United College Staff Common Room, with over ninety Members joining the celebration. Traditional pot food and New Year cakes were served. A lion dance by the College Chinese Martial Arts Society was started by Dr Thomas H C Cheung, the Chairman of the College Board of Trustees, accompanied by Professor Jimmy C M Yu, College Head and Professor Alaster H Y Lau, Chairman of the College Staff Association. Professor Yu and Professor Lau addressed the audience with Lunar New Year blessings. There were booth games and Chinese lantern puzzles at the gathering. Thanks to Professor Chang Song-hing for providing the puzzles for the function.

    Elementary Class Chen Style Tai Chi 12 forms

    Co-organised by the College Task Force on Health Promotion, College Life Committee and United College Staff Association, a series of Taichi Course were successfully held in previous years. In order to promote health awareness, new Taichi course on Chen-style Taichi will be organised again this year.

    The late College alumnus, famous Hong Kong anecdotes writer, ex-Head of the Department of Cinema and Television, School of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University Mr Ng Chun-bong (Penname: Ng Ho) (71/SOCI), had his treasures exhibited at Remembering the Breeze: Hong Kong in the 50s and 60s from the Ng Ho Collection. The exhibition is open to public from 27 March till 30 September 2015.

    UC Wu Chung Multimedia Library News Late Reading Room Opens 24 Hours During Examination Period

    From 9:30 pm, 8 April 2015 to 9:00 am, 9 May 2015, United College Wu Chung Multimedia Library will open its Late Reading Room on the lower ground floor of the Library building twenty-four hours daily during the examination period. During this period, the University Security Unit will have officers patrolling the area at night to ensure the safety of the users and the good order of the Room.
