REASON FOR SELECTING THE AREA OF

RESEARCH

homeless people has been seen in his community, I thought that is a concern that is

of questions given to persons who make up the population of the study. A

Page 4: Sba Social Studies 2016

quantitative data. It is fairly easy to distribute and can also be made based on the data

collected and applied in this case to residents of Rio Bueno.

Questionnaires were designed to collect data from respondents. There were fifteen

(15) Questions, twenty questionnaires were distributed among the residents but only

10 returned to the investigator. There were 9 males and 11 females from the same

community from which the investigation was done. The questionnaires was

distributed while the investigator walked through the community. The age group of

persons who received the questionnaires ranged from 18-60.

PROCEDURE USED TO COLLECT DATA

As stated earlier, Rio Bueno has about 200 households. It was calculated that a

sample of 80% was necessary in order to ensure accurate conclusions on the level of

prevalence of homelessness in the researcher’s community.

A total of 20 questionnaires were prepared for distribution to the community

members.

The researcher therefore decided to choose the households by a process of random

selection which will cater for the requirements mentioned above. Each slip of paper

was folded and placed into a envelope.

The 20 households selected were then supplied with questionnaires, but not all

questionaires were returned after the researcher completed he then analyze the data

collected.

FINDINGS

In figure one the column chart was used to present the reasons why people become homeless. Of

the ten persons that answered this question on the questionnaire, nine or 90% which is the highest

figure, stated that mentally illness is the main or major reason why people become homeless. Four

or 40% of the respondents thought that unemployment was another reason for homelessness in the

community of Rio Bueno. Substance abuse and other items were stated by three different

respondents while 2 or 20% stated poverty. After looking at the data that was presented in figure

one, It was quite evident that the major reason responsible for people becoming homeless is

mentally illness. Most people ranging from ages 25 to 34 are being in homeless state. In this case,

homeless is like a word that is so how not good because you don't have any where to live, no

finances and no healthy food whatsoever.

Page 15: Sba Social Studies 2016

In figure two, the bar graph shows that It shows that 80% of the respondents thinks that

Government are responsible for homelessness because of not enough available jobs and also some

people may be facing both mentally and financial issues.

In figure three, the bar chart was used to present the age categories in which people become

homeless. Four or 40% respondents stated the age category 25-34 and this was consider as the

most. Also 1 or 10% of the respondents stated 45-54 and 55-60 which makes both the least number

of respondents. In relation to the data in the bar graph presented, it was clearly understood that

most people become homeless at the ages of 25 to 34.

For question nine that was “is homelessness a problem within your community or country on a

whole?” Most of the respondents stated that it is a problem within their community but for the rest

of the country they do not know.

Recommendations

(1) The Government should allow more job apportunities so that people could get job before

they end up in the state of being homeless.

(2) People need to cut the Gambling, Drug abuse and other items that they use which can cause

health problems and risking financial resources

(3) The government should look into this grown problem and plan educative programs

regularly, to educate people about homelessness and issues that cause them to end up in

that sort of position.
