FAITH AND HOPE

F aith and hope are closely united in today’s readings. The Israel-ites knew when the Passover was coming, and so were not in fear, but had faith and cour-

age, “putting into effect with one ac-cord the divine institution.” In this we can see a foretelling of the Eucharist that we celebrate according to Christ’s command, “Do this in memory of me.” We see that Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob died in faith, alt-hough they did not see fulfillment of the promise. We live in hope that our faith will be fulfilled every time we celebrate this sacrament. We too are not to be afraid, but to have hope that our faith will be fulfilled in the coming of Christ. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

W hen Pope Pius XII died in 1958, there was the usual buzz of speculation about likely successors. Cardi-

nal Agajanian, Patriarch of the Armenians, was highly thought of as a likely choice. This took many Catholics by surprise, since he had never celebrated the same lit-urgy as Pope Pius, but followed ancient Armenian customs according to the Eastern Church, which veils the Eucharisic liturgy from sight by a series of cur-tains, and in which the priest kneels while the people stand for Communion. In the years that followed, the Second Vatican Council would affirm the dignity and independence of the Eastern Churches, in complete union with Rome, yet different in patterns of life and worship. We have the same faith, the same sacraments, and the same pope. Yet everywhere in the world our sepa-rate Churches are combined into families held togeth-er by the ministry of bishops. LA FE Y LA ESPERANZA

E n las lecturas de hoy la fe y la esperanza es-tán muy unidas. Los israelitas sabían cuando la Pascua se acercaba, y

eso no les atemorizaba, sino que tenían fe y animo; “y de común acuerdo se impusieron esta ley sagrada”. En esto podemos vis-lumbrar un anuncio de la Eucaris-tía que celebramos de acuerdo al mandato del Señor Jesús “Hagan esto en memoria mía”. Vemos que Abraham, Sara, Isaac y Jacob murie-ron en la fe, aun cuando ellos no vieron cumplida la promesa. Vivimos con la esperanza que nuestra fe llegará a su cumplimiento cada vez que celebramos este sacramento. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

H ace casi 2000 años, Jesús declaró que “los zorros tienen guaridas, y las aves del cielo sus nidos; pero

el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde reclinar la cabeza”. Lamentable-mente en las calles y ca-llejones del mundo este dicho se realiza diariamente en tantos abandonados por la sociedad que viven sin techo ni hogar. En los años 40 el santo jesuita, Alberto Hurtado de Chile quiso darle al Hijo del hombre un lugar donde recli-nar su cabeza recogiendo a los niños y a los adultos indigentes. Su ejemplo llamó la atención de otros cristia-nos que se unieron a sus esfuerzos y así en 1944 fun-daron la asociación benéfica “Hogar de Cristo”. Este hogar se dedica aun todavía a acoger, educar y rehabilitar a los necesitados dándoles las herramien-tas necesarias para poder depender de si mismos. También vela por sus almas dándoles una formación total de cuerpo, alma y espíritu. L a Fundación Reina de los Ángeles le invita a honrar a Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, homónimo y patrona de la ciudad de Los

Ángeles, con una Misa votiva bilingüe en la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles, presidida por el Arzobispo José H. Gomez el sábado 24 de agosto de 2019 a las 3 p.m. Después de la Misa, el Padre David Gallardo, pastor de la catedral, dirigirá una Procesión del Rosario bilingüe en la plaza de la catedral. La noche concluirá con una presentación de Mariachi en vivo en la plaza de la catedral, a partir de las 5:15 p.m. hasta las 6:15 p.m. para celebrar el 238 cumpleaños de la ciudad de Los Ángeles. LEGION DE MARIA ¿Qué hace la Legión de María? Evangelizamos, visitamos a los enfermos y damos comunión a los confinados. Promover la devoción al Santo Rosario, la Divina Misericordia, la escápula marrón y la medalla milagrosa.
