    NEWS

    The Pastoral Office

    will be closed on Monday,

    December 26 in observance of

    Christmas Day.

We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas

From the Staff of Santa Catalina Church

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Santa Catalina Church,

Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year! In lieu of sending Christ-mas cards to all of you this year, allow me to send my blessings through this note. The money I would have spent on cards and postage, I will donate

to St. Vincent De Paul for the needs of the poor. I will remember you at my Christmas Masses and continue to ask God to bless you in the coming year.

I have really enjoyed my first few months here and look forward to several years more. I will be in Kansas City over the New Years holiday to spend some time with my mother and siblings and their families. May God bless you and your families with good health and happiness during the coming year and keep us all close to Him whose birth we celebrate.

    God Bless,

2ND ANNUAL GOODIES, GADGETS AND GIZMO SALE

    FEBRUARY 25, 2012

Dont forget to start saving items to donate.

This year all proceeds will go for additional landscaping needed on the church grounds. We will be accepting donations for the sale at the parish offices from February 18, 2012 to February 22, 2012. Lets make this Goodies sale another success.

As is our tradition at Santa Catalina Parish, we invite you to contribute to our Christmas flowers by donating plants or making a monetary donation in honor of

your loved ones. Either way, by using this form we will then be able to note your intention in a list of memorials that will appear in the bulletin after Christmas. Plants can be dropped off at the parish office or the church (around the time of morning Mass) from December 18-24. Cash and checks may be put in the collection baskets at our weekend Masses, or dropped off at the Pastoral Center. Be sure to note Christmas Flowers in the memo section of your check.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS: IN HONOR OF A LOVED ONE

    KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

There was no room in the inn for the infant Jesus that is the position of the unborn children to-day. They are crowded out of the busy schedules of so many people doing so many important things, but who dont have a finger to lift to protect the lives of these children from abortion. They are crowded out of legislative agendas, preaching schedules, career plans & volunteer activities. Theres no room at the inn.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

    Psalm 51:10

Dont be. God doesn't want us to be all alone. He wants us to turn to others when things are bothering us. Stephen Ministers will walk with you through your troubles and be there for you when you need them. Consider letting a Stephen Minister help. It is confidential, free, and very helpful. Please contact Judy Rossman at 825-9611, ext. 104 for more informa-tion.

I thank God every day for my Stephen Minister. I dont know how I could have made it through the past year with her.

I was able to tell my Stephen Minister things I could never have told a friend. And he never judged me or looked down on me. He just listened and cared. It was just what I needed.

    YOUTH CORNER

By Life Teen | November 24, 2011 Have you ever been to a wedding? There are a lot of people in the wedding. There is flower girl, brides-maids, groomsmen, ushers, wedding coordinator, etc. All of these people add to the celebration of the wed-ding. However, if they dont come, the wedding would still happen. The only two people needed for a wedding are the bridegroom and the bride. If one of them does not show up, the wedding doesnt happen. The Bible says that Jesus is the bridegroom and the Church is His bride (Song of Songs, John 3, and Revela-tion). At Mass, we are called to the wedding feast of Heaven where we are united to our bridegroom in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We can always count on the bridegroom showing up. When we are at Mass, we renew our Covenant with Him the New Covenant that he instituted with us at the Last Supper. It is this covenant this promise made by the one who loves us that allows us to one day spend eternity with our bridegroom in Heaven. This covenant is something that has to be renewed every week on the Sabbath. Genesis 1 says that God created in six days and on the seventh day he rested. The number seven in Hebrew is sheba which is also the Hebrew word for covenant. On the seventh day in the book of Genesis, God cre-ated a covenant with man and the seventh day would be put aside for creation to worship her Creator. This is also why God commands us to worship Him, to keep holy the Sabbath day in the Ten Command-ments (Exodus 20:8-11). When we skip Mass on Sunday, we are violating our covenant with God. We are saying to God, I dont need to be united to you. I dont need to worship you. It may seem innocent, but we are actually declin-ing His marriage proposal. We are not showing up for our own wedding. When we make a decision to deny His invitation to covenant we are saying we dont want a relationship with Him. Because our God loves us and is a gentle-man, he allows us to do this. However, its a grave sin to miss Mass. If we have full knowledge that missing Mass is a grave sin and we fully consent to it (i.e. being sick or getting in a car accident on the way to Mass would be legiti-mate excuses for missing Mass), then we are in a state of mortal sin we have cut off our relationship with God and need to seek the Sacrament of Reconciliation before we receive Holy Communion again.

Why Do Catholics Have to Attend Sunday Mass? The Jesse Tree is an evergreen sign of Gods ability to sprout a new divine dream after it has been cut

back and apparently destroyed. Jesse was father of King David of Israel, whose dynasty rule was promised to last forever. Genera-tions after David, Babylonians chopped down that royal family tree, destroyed Solomons temple and carried off the Jewish elite into exile in Babylon.

In their mournful exile, the prophet Isaiah sang a song of hope, pointing toward a promised prophecy: A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. Isaiah proclaims the name of the promise to be Emmanuel, which means God with us. Each week, the children in our Religious Education program have hung the ornaments on our Jesse Tree, one for each day of Advent.

    THE JESSE TREE

THE CHILDRENS CHOIR INVITES YOU We are still working to build a children's choir for the family Mass. Last month we had more children singing even though the music director was sick and on the side-lines - way to go kids! Dori Smith, one of our cantors who has led children's choirs was able to help and the kids were just great! Building a choir is a slow undertaking, but we still hope to have more and more of our children's voices and faces at the Mass. We have been working on songs for the Childrens Christmas Mass and would like to invite you to join us for our Childrens Christmas Pageant Mass on December 24 at 6pm.
