All are Welcome! As a community of the people of God, the members of San Marcos Lutheran Church are called to welcome
all people, regardless of age, economic status, ethnic background, gender, physical or mental ability, race or sexual orienta-
tion. We affirm that in Christ “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male or fe-
male.” (Galatians 3:28)
THE GOOD NEWS Page 3
DO NOT BE AFRAID
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an
angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terri-
fied. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see--I am bringing you good news of great joy for
all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. (Luke
2:8-11)
“Do not be afraid,” said the angel. I fear death, the judgment of God, the world, hunger, and the like. The
angel announces a Savior who will free us from fear.” (Martin Luther)
Martin Luther knew fear. After his excommunication and refusal to recant the Emperor put him under the
ban of death. The medieval world in which Luther lived was ridden with disease, the plague was feared by
rich and poor alike. The principalities of Germany were under attack by the Turks. Martin Luther lived at
a time in which he could have easily given into fear. Yet, Luther had another vision. He was captured by
the gracious love of God. His faith was in the God made flesh, the Christ Child that is born for us.
The shepherds in Luke’s story also knew fear. They were the lowest of the low on society’s pecking order.
They lived at a time when their own nation was under the military dictatorship of Rome. Yet, God’s spe-
cial messengers, the angels, came with a word of hope to these shepherds, “Do Not Be Afraid....I am bring-
ing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who
is the Christ, the Lord”
You and I know fear. You or a loved one is ill. You face the end of a relationship. We live in a world torn
apart by violence and terror. We know all too well that people wander our nation’s streets hungry and
homeless. We’ve watched reports of God’s children around the globe who are refugees, forced to leave
their homes because of political oppression. How will we respond during times such as these?
Fear is our vulnerability. Instead, we must learn the spiritual discipline and habit of the scriptural com-
mand, BE NOT AFRAID. The gift of Christmas does not come to a perfect “Christmas Card” world.
God’s gift of the Christ Child is laid down in a manger in this very broken world. That is our hope, that is
our promise, that is our strength. Fear will easily overtake us if do not keep our focus on God’s Word
made Flesh, the Christ Child. God’s great gift to us can finally address our deepest fears. We have God’s
Word, Jesus Christ, our Savior the only one who will free us from fear.
Dear Sisters and Brother in Christ, DO NOT FEAR. At times such as these I find great solace in the fol-
lowing prayer: O God, where hearts are fearful and constricted, grant courage and hope. Where anxiety
is infectious and widening, grant peace and reassurance. Where impossibilities close every door and win-
dow, grant imagination and resistance. Where distrust twists our thinking, grant healing and illumination.
Where spirits are daunted and weakened, grant soaring wings and strengthened dreams. All these things
we ask in the name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord. Amen. (ELW p.76)
Peace in Christ,
Pastor David Jorstad
Thoughts on the Greatest Gift from Pastor Karla
“All the believers were together and had everything in common.” Acts 2:44
It was so much fun to see everyone's excitement over the blessing bags we put together a few weeks ago. The
idea of spontaneous opportunities to create something and do good caught all of our imaginations. This is not
a new concept at San Marcos Lutheran, rather it symbolizes the willingness and generosity of this family of
faith.
Every time I look out at our congregation, I see such loving, faithful people. Simply mention a good idea for
giving or serving and you're there! Not everyone does everything, and that is good and healthy, but if the idea
is well enough planned or an organized, the support is strong.
Reminds me of Pastor David's sermon a few weeks ago about how giving is fun!
So there's no preaching in this article, no "shoulds", just a great big THANK YOU for being who you
are...kind and generous people, willing to be guided by the Holy Spirit, trusting God will meet our needs so
that we can freely give, robustly give, thankfully give.
When we live this way, we join the dance of the Trinity, the dance in which God the Father/Mother freely
gives to God the Son, freely gives to God the Spirit, freely gives to us. And thus we freely give as the Spirit
gives us the ability, remembering that the source of the giving will never run dry!
So keep up the good work! Have fun with it! Bless everyone around you! Then go take a nap! Leave the rest
to God.
Thank you also to those who work so diligently to give us the opportunities to give! The gifts of organizing,
reaching out, making contact with Alvin Dunn, ELCA Good Gifts, Interfaith, etc. is another necessary aspect
of making this happen.
So keep your eyes open for opportunities, keep listening to the Spirit within you, and let's see where this
dance will take us!
All this we do as we prepare to celebrate the Incarnation, the birth of Jesus, the greatest gift of all.
In amazed and wondrous gratitude,
Pastor Karla

this up, speak with Robin Rubin, treasurer or Pastor

HAVEN HOUSE NEWS We will be serving our monthly meal at Interfaith’s
Haven House homeless shelter on December 13th.
Food and serving are covered – if you signed up,
you will receive a reminder the week before. Now
we will resume sign-ups for the second Sunday
meals in January through March. Please check your
calendars, pick the dates you (and your family?)
would like to help in some way, and then look for
the sign-up sheets in the Courtyard or Luther Hall.
If you have questions or would like to sign up by
phone or email, please contact Doris Payne at 760-
653-3026 or [email protected]. If you’d
like to donate money instead of shopping or cook-
ing, please make checks payable to San Marcos Lu-
theran Church with a note it’s for Social Concerns-
Haven House or put cash in a pew envelope and
mark it for Social Concerns-Haven House. Thrivent
Action Team dollars will be used to purchase some
food items.
SOCIAL CONCERNS CHRISTMAS “GIVING TREE” PROJECT
Look for the two decorated Christmas trees (one in
the Narthex and the other in Luther Hall) the Sun.
after Thanksgiving. They will have tags for Alvin
Dunn School on them, and you will be given an op-
portunity to purchase a gift card again this
year. The cards are given to the school to distribute
to those who will need a little help to make Christ-
mas a “little brighter” for some of the children and
their families! We have established a good part-
nership with the school, and it gives us a chance to
show our commitment of love and faith with them!
You may purchase a Target gift card for any de-
nomination. ($5, $15, $25-?) Just make a notation
that it is for Alvin Dunn and return it to the church
office or the gift box under the decorated Christmas
trees. The deadline for these cards is Dec. 13th,
and we thank you for your generosity in the past
and your continued support this year!

TURN ON YOUR CELL PHONE
AT CHURCH! Of course you should turn off your cell phone dur-
ing worship; but before you do, use it to help spread
the word about San Marcos Lutheran Church. As
we get closer to Christmas, use all of these methods
to invite people to Christmas Eve worship.
It is easy, and there are so many ways:
1) Take a selfie or a picture (with their permission)
with someone else, the church building, or a
fixture, like the Baptismal font, then post it to
Facebook, Instagram, or your other favorite so-
cial media site.
2) Check-in on Facebook with your smart
phone. Search for the San Marcos Lutheran
page -- go to the "More" area and click on
Check-In. This will post on your friends pages
- I did this last Sunday and received 17 likes
from people. That is 17 people who heard
about SMLC from one check-in.
3) Message a friend that you will pray for them in
worship today at San Marcos Lutheran.
4) Tweet about being at San Marcos Lutheran.
5) Use any of your favorite apps to share.
The Holy Spirit is doing great things here at SMLC
-- let's tell the world!

SMLC Children’s Center
December 2015
During November, our preschool thanked Veteran’s
for their service, welcoming home 2 of our daddies
from their deployments! The children participated
in Feed the Turkey, our annual outreach to the In-
terfaith Food Pantry! After loading Mrs. McDan-
iel’s car with the food we collected, we celebrated
our accomplishment with 2 days of Thanksgiving
Feasts and a Turkey Trot race shared as a preschool
family!
Looking ahead to December, the preschool will join
our congregation youth in caroling at a nursing
home, getting the sanctuary tree trimmed and enjoy
a meal together during God’s Work, Our Voices on
December 5th. The preschool has also adopted 23
infants-toddlers from the San Pascal Teen Parent
Program (CAL-SAFE) and will be providing warm
pajamas and a story book wrapped by our pre-
schoolers to these deserving families for Christmas.
Barbara Velivis’ team will once again host our holi-
day Parents Night Out for our families on Decem-
ber 11thand ALL in the congregation are invited to
attend our annual Christmas Play – The Forever
Gift – on Friday, December 18th at 10:30 AM in
the sanctuary featuring an original song by Mrs.
McDaniel. The children have been working so
hard learning the music and it promises to be a
truly blessed event! I have contacted the North
Pole and we will have a special surprise visit
from Santa and Mrs. Claus immediately after the
show…shhh, this is a secret!
As we come to the end of another year, I feel so
blessed to be your Center Director. To work in
a place where friendship and teamwork are fos-
tered and valued; where the needs of the “whole
family” are an integral part of our “common
core” value system, and where over forever gift,
Jesus Christ, is present every single moment.
Blessings for a joyful Christmas and a Happy
New Year from your preschool team!
Anne, Theresa, Leilani, Brittney,
Diane, Marit and Nikki!
