All are Welcome! As a community of the people of God, the members of San Marcos Lutheran Church are called to welcome

all people, regardless of age, economic status, ethnic background, gender, physical or mental ability, race or sexual orienta-

tion. We affirm that in Christ “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male or fe-

    male.” (Galatians 3:28)

There is a Place for You Here - You Are Welcome to Bring Your Needy Old Self!

“Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayers of the saints are powerful and effective.” (James 5:13-16)

Most of the time when we come to worship or gather with other folks of faith, we will put our best foot forward. Someone asks the polite question, “How are you?” “Just fine,” we answer with a smiling face. Some days that’s the honest truth, but often it is not. Have you ever noticed that when something terrible happens in a person's life, (maybe your own) there is an almost automatic tendency to hide that truth from our faith family? People with broken lives mysteriously quit coming to church, crawling into their little shells precisely when they need a community of faith the most. And we are left asking: “Where did Jim ever go?” “What happened to Maria?”

The book of James invites us to a different sort of community, to be a place that tells honest stories about ourselves and, in doing so, cracks the doors wide open to invite others to do the same. “Are any of you suffering? Are any of you cheerful? Are any of you sick?” There is a place for you here around the table of Jesus. Here we can be in conversation about what’s breaking us. Come and be a part of a new kind of community where we can be our needy old selves, fellow beggars of God’s grace. There is a place for you here at San Marcos Lutheran Church. Welcome Home!

Gracious God, we bring our needy old selves to you again. We come with hands wide open and you fill our empty hands with every good gift. Help us to never cease singing and praying with one another. Through your grace may we mysteriously become what you call us to be, the Body of Christ. Amen.

    Pastor David Jorstad

    On being God’s People in this Place and Time He has told you, O mortal, what is good;

and what does the LORD require of youbut to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

    Micah 6:8

We know God’s ways are not our ways. Even our best efforts and ideas may not be what God would have us do. I’ve learned this the hard way I will discover this again.

But it seems a little clearer what God would have us do in such a place and time as this. The prophet Micah learned it and poses the challenge to us. "God has shown us through all the Scripture what we are to do. Throughout the Torah," he writes, "you’ve heard you are to welcome the stranger, give aid to the alien, look out for the widow and orphan, defend the poor, do not cheat the vulnerable. Here, let me summarize it for you: Do justice! Love mercy! Walk humbly with your God!"

Jesus lived this message as he reached out to others, left the “holy” folk behind and made it a regular habit of eating, drinking and celebrating with those considered outsiders. Honestly, he must have done this daily for the amount of anger he provoked!

We’re not Jesus, but we claim to be his followers. We try to put our feet in his footsteps, we try to take the path he would take, we try, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to discern what God would have us do in this place and in this time.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to this congregation for doing what we believe Christ would have us do. This past “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday, and all the work leading up to it, has been a time of graciousness, generosity, forgiveness, kindness, and love. I believe Jesus is pleased.

In years past, “God’s Work Our Hands” Sunday as served as a launching pad, a spring board of sorts, to energize us for a whole year of connecting, serving, giving and growing in love. May we be encouraged again to do justice, love kindness and walk with our Savior, Jesus Christ.

    In Christ’s service,

    Pastor Karla

WHAT’S GOING ON... MEN’S BREAKFAST & BIBLE STUDY

    THE GOOD NEWS

Sept. 10th at 8:00 am in Luther HallThe Bible Study is led by Pastor David. Phone Bryan Mace for details at (760)431-7222.

    Remember in prayer:

Healing for Anne McDaniel, Betty Scott, Sandra Pevler, and Judy White.

Our sympathy to the Deen family at the death of Patty’s mother, Betty Macho. May God bless all who mourn with the hope of the resurrection.

We rejoice at the birth of Vivienne, born Aug 30, to Mark & Danielle Kottke & big brother Cas.

A big round of thanks to two creative people who share their gifts with San Marcos Lutheran:

Kristopher Jerpseth designed, raised funds and installed the shade sails over the tables that are used for the outdoor Sunday School classes. The sails look attractive as well making the space behind the church offices inviting for our Sunday School children and teachers. This project was a part of Kris’ Eagle Scout Award.

Bill Hanson has created a marvelous portable “Welcome Center/Coffee Cart.” Scrap plywood leftover from another cabinet building site was put together along with Oak, Mahogany, Spanish Cedar and Birth that were used for the beautiful butcher block style top. The card has draws for storage as well as shelves to display church welcome materials. The finished project is a wonder to behold. Look for the Welcome Center/Coffee Cart in its location on the patio on Sunday mornings. Thank you Kristopher and Bill for sharing your gifts with San Marcos Lutheran in such wonderful ways!

TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE CLASSled by Pastor Dell & Pastor Frances Olson resumes studying the Book of Psalms on Tuesdays, Sept. 6th & 20th, (1st & 3rd Sun. of each month) 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. in Luther Hall. JUSTINE HANSEN, CHOIR DIRECTOR We are pleased to announce that Justine Hansen will soon begin serving as our choir director. She plans to begin leading choir rehearsals in late September, with her first Sunday being October 2. Justine has an extensive background in vocal and choral music. She has directed, taught, and coached singers of all ages. She directs one of the North Coast Singers children’s choirs. Justine has directed the choirs at the Bishop’s School in La Jolla. She currently teaches and directs music at the Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad. She is an accomplished soprano, singing with the San Diego Pro Arte Voices. She comes to us from the position of Adult Choir Director at First United Methodist Church in Chula Vista. Justine has Lutheran roots, hailing from the Midwest. Her first church choir director position was in an ELCA congregation in Wisconsin. Welcome Justine!

WE ARE CARING FOR GOD’S CREATION!With great appreciation for all who gave advice and support and who contributed to the fundraising, we have completed the installation of a 20.4 kilowatt solar system along with new roofing on the Sanctuary and Luther Hall. We flipped the switch on August 9 after San Diego Gas and Electric’s final approval and have been saving trees and dollars since. Completion was only five weeks beyond the anticipated finish date. Importantly, we came in on budget with no unanticipated cost overruns. The total cost was $94,361.30. Over $30,000 has been contributed with the remainder drawn from the SMLC Endowment Fund to be repaid with 3.75% interest.

The roofing work was done by Dil’s Roofing of Vista, and Sungevity installed the solar system. Sungevity will give customers referred from SMLC a $750 discount on a residential solar system. And the Church will receive $750, as well! The SMLC web site has a link to Sungevity for members considering solar and wishing to receive the discount.

Special thanks to the Council for supporting this major capital improvement project. Vern Soderstrom and Pastor David contributed greatly to the initial investigation, interviewing bidders, and monitoring installation.

TRANSITIONS IN OUR PRESCHOOL MINISTRYIn July, as most of you know, Anne McDaniel announced her resignation as Preschool Director effective Aug. 31. Anne has served us exemplary well in her role as preschool director these last several years. Prior toserving as director, Anne was on our teaching staff. Anne was also among the leadership of SanMarcos Lutheran Church who helped give birth to our children’s center.

The following is a portion of the letter she sent out to our preschool parents in July:

Dear Parents and Families of SMLCCC,

Since 2002, it has been one of the great highlights of my life to serve San Marcos Lutheran Children’s Center in a variety of ways: First as a founding Board member, then as a Teaching Assistant, Outdoor Education Teacher and PK Teacher and the last 3 years as your Center Director. I am extremely proud that during my tenure as Director, my staff, the Pastors, the congregation and all of our preschool families have worked tirelessly with me to build one of the finest early childhood programs in the country. Together we have much to be proud.

But the time has come for my journey with our center to end and so I have tendered my resignation effective August 31, 2016 so that I may have the time I need to attend to the treatments and therapies needed to fully recover from breast cancer and to focus on some important personal goals in my life. While I know this news may be concerning, the preschools mission remains steadfast and my entire staff remains dedicated to continuing to provide your children with a first class education in an environment of love and peace and joy...

Peace and blessings to all of you,Anne McDaniel

As Director, Anne has cast a clear vision for ways to strengthen our preschool ministry. By working together with our Preschool Board, the pastors, and other congregational leaders she brought us to where we are today. We have a superb staff that works well together. We have an inviting, children-friendly facility which includes both indoor and outdoor space. The National Wildlife Habitat outdoor space is one of Anne’s lasting marks on our center. Above all, Anne has put the needs of the children first as she provided a nurturing environment where children can grow into God’s unconditional love. We wish Anne and her family the very best as she continues to grow in health day by day. We know that she has a very bright and joy filled future in front of her! The congregation of San Marcos Lutheran Church will honor Anne on Sun. morning Sept. 18.

We immediately began the search for a new director. On the Search Committee were Mary Lyn Padley, Theresa Mohn, Pastor Karla and Pastor David. In Aug. Ann Kim Leong was selected as our new director. Ann Kim Leong will begin on September 12. Ann brings a wealth of experience as a preschool teacher and administrator. Most recently she served as Assistant Principle of Discovery Isle Child Development Center, San Marcos. Ann is an active member of a Korean United Presbyterian Church, where she serves as Sunday School Program Director with their English ministry. Ann will be installed during Sunday worship services in the near future.

Ann Kim Leong shares the following:

My name is Ann Leong and I am very excited to be the new San Marcos Lutheran Church Preschool Director. I love the thought of being part of this ministry which reaches out and loves the children and their families. I grew up attending Sunday School and taught Sunday School when I was in High School and throughout college. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from San Diego State University and while art was my passion, children began to play a more important role as I became a mother. I went on to study further and earned and currently hold a Child Development Program Director Permit. I served at my church as an Assistant Director for Children’s Ministries while working full-time as an Assistant Principal at a Child Development Center. In the last 25 years of teaching, I have worked with a wide range of ages, from infants to school-age but my favorite age is 3 to 5 years old. Faith and family play a big part of my life. Currently, I live in Carlsbad with my husband Will, daughter Elle, and our dog, Jake.

    CHILDREN'S CENTER NEWS

    September 2016

THE DIRECTOR'S CORNER: ALOHA TO ALL! It is finally time to say “aloha” ...which means good-bye for now, but hello in the future, wherever we meet! It has been a pleasure the past thirteen years to nurture the growth of the preschool, first as a founder, then in the classroom and especially the last 3 as your Center Director. I leave the preschool knowing it is world class educational facility because of our work together on behalf of the children. It is a comfort to me that I leave knowing the new Director has an amazing facility full of loving and caring staff, parents and kiddos who will dream new dreams for the future of the Children’s Center and ask that you please show her the love and support you have shown me and my family over the years. I am excited for all of you and wish you nothing but the best! Keep Positive! Life is too short, so don’t waste a minute! God’s Blessings for Peace and Happiness, Mrs. Anne McDaniel and Family

+UPDATE ON NEW DIRECTORWe are happy to announce that Ann Kim Leong begins as Director of the Children’s Center on September 12, 2016. Ann brings a wealth of experience as a preschool teacher and administrator. Most recently she served as Asst. Principal of Discovery Isle Child Development Center in San Marcos. Ann is an active member of a Korean United Presbyterian Church, where she serves as Sunday School Program Director with their English ministry. In the interim period between Mrs. McDaniel’s departure and Mrs. Leong’s start date, the staff of the Children’s Center remains committed to answering your questions and concerns regarding your child’s daily care. So continue to speak with your child’s teacher. Mrs. McDaniel has agree to continue to monitor your billing and enrollment issues through mid-September, so e-mail her with any questions or concerns regarding these specific issues at [email protected]. Any questions regarding the Director transition, please contact Pastor David Jorstad at 760-727-1509.

Upcoming Important Dates:Monday, Sept 5: No School - Labor DayWed, Sept 28 and Thurs, Sept 29th: Birthday Celebrations for our Sept Birthdays REMEMBER that Thurs, Oct 13 and Fri, Oct 14 is our Back to School Picnic Day bring a lunch to share with your child 11:30am-1pm. Grandparents, nanny or babysitter are welcome to come on your behalf, just let your child’s teacher know. Tips for transitioning from summer to the school year:As we move from the lazy days of summer to a more scheduled routine, it’s easy to forget that your preschooler might not understand why things have to change. So it’s important that you are taking the same time to communicate with them what is happening as you might be an older sibling. If you need to get up earlier, then make it a family discussion. Be excited and positive about school! Have your preschooler lay out their clothing they will wear the night before, and if they are staying for lunch have them help pack what they will bring. The more involved you make your preschooler in the routine of getting ready for school, the easier it will be for them to understand the changes.
