Luxury Goods Retailing in Asia-Pacific, 2014-2019

Japan, China, and South Korea are the three largest luxury goods

market in the region. Although Japan is a mature market, it opens a

window of opportunity for retailers as sales in emerging economies

such as China and Russia have slowed.

China, growing at a double digit rate until 2012, was expected to

surpass Japan’s luxury market, but the market staggered in 2013 due

to slowdown in economic growth, and collapsed in 2014, with the

commencement of the government’s anti-corruption drive.

Of the three largest markets, South Korea is the fastest growing,

driven by a strong wealthy population, growing purchasing power, and

surging luxury fashion, with changing demands from young Koreans

and an increasing influx of tourists from China and other Asian

countries.

luxury has spurred the luxury personal care market in

the region. The US based luxury skin care brand,

Bellatora, expanded internationally by opening stores

in Singapore. Although the luxury market in Singapore

is small, the spending power of Singaporean

consumers on luxury goods is high. The country will

continue to see high growth, driven by a robust

economy, high purchasing power of locals, and

increasing tourists spending on duty free products.

The desire to look good, an increase in the awareness

of innovative and unique beauty products, and growing

men’s interest in enhancing their appearance, are

expected to drive the market.
