¿POR QUÉ HACEMOS ESO?

LA VIDA CATÓLICA EXPLICADA

Pregunta:

¿Qué creen los católicos sobre

la resurrección de los muertos?

Respuesta: Todos los domingos, proclamamos en

el Credo que creemos "en la resurrec-

ción de la carne". ¿Eso significa la resu-

rrección de Cristo o la nuestra? ¡Ambos!

La resurrección de Jesús es parte de la

obra de salvación, pero también es una

señal de lo que vendrá. Si bien la muerte

separa nuestros cuerpos y nuestras al-

mas, esta no era la intención de Dios

cuando nos creó por primera vez. Es un

efecto del pecado original. Al final de los

tiempos, nuestros cuerpos y nuestras al-

mas se reunirán.

Científicamente, podemos tener preguntas sobre esto,

ya que los cuerpos se descomponen a lo largo de los

siglos. ¿O qué pasa con los santos, cuyas reliquias están

esparcidas por la tierra? Cómo sucederá la resurrec-

ción es un misterio. Pero sabemos que nuestro cuerpo

resucitado será nuestro cuerpo. Si estamos en el cielo,

nuestro cuerpo estará en un estado glorificado. Algu-

nos teólogos especulan sobre cómo será esta glorifica-

ción basándose en el cuerpo resucitado de Jesús.

¿Seremos capaces de atravesar paredes?

¿Comeremos, ya que Jesús partió el pan con sus discí-

pulos? Realmente no conocemos las respuestas a estas

preguntas. Sin embargo, sabemos que seremos libres

de los efectos de la caída (como enfermedad y dolor)

y de los defectos físicos que ocurrieron en la vida.

Question:

What do Catholics believe

about the resurrection of the

dead?

Answer: Every Sunday, we proclaim in the

Creed that we believe “in the resurrec-

tion of the body.” Does that mean

Christ’s resurrection or our own? Both!

Jesus’ resurrection is part of the work of

salvation, but it’s also a sign of what’s

to come. While death separates our

bodies and our souls, this was not the

intention of God when He first created

us. It’s an effect of original sin. At the

end of time, our bodies and our souls

will be reunited.

Scientifically, we may have questions

about this, since bodies decompose over the course of

centuries. Or what about the saints, whose relics are

spread around the earth? How the resurrection will

happen is a mystery. But we know that our resurrected

body will be our body. If we are in heaven, our body

will be in a glorified state. Some theologians speculate

what this glorification will be like based on Jesus’ resur-

rected body. Will we be able to walk through walls?

Will we eat, since Jesus broke bread with his disciples?

We don’t really know the answers to these questions.

We do know, however, that we will be free from the

effects of the fall (such as sickness and pain) and phys-

ical defects that occurred in life. Christ redeems us as

Breaking the Stewardship Mold

Have you noticed how we always tend to pigeonhole

one another — and ourselves? “I could never serve on

the Parish Council. That’s for Rick and Ellen and that

whole group of people who have done it for years.”

“Greg takes care of faith formation in the parish — he

always has. He doesn’t need my help.” “I can’t afford

to give the big bucks like those families who sit up front

can. My offering wouldn’t matter even if I did increase

it.”

Thinking like this is a good indication that we aren’t in

conversation with God about what His will is for our

lives. If we have already decided what we are and are

not meant to do, we aren’t likely to pray over it, to dis-

cern it.

We have to be open to the spirit of the Lord wherever it

leads us, regardless of what we or others have come to

expect from us. We human beings come to believe

that we are such good judges of what others can offer

— or what we ourselves can offer. But God has plans

for us to which we aren’t privy. God calls everyone to

serve Him in the way that pleases Him best, and only

He can decide what that is. Everyday Stewardship de-

mands a continual accounting of who we can be,

what we can offer — even if it’s outside our comfort

zone, even if it’s something that never occurred to us

before.

There’s only one Person who can tell us what God

wants from us. Do we even think to ask Him?

sive wealth. What do you think should be the believer’s

proper disposition toward money?

Jesus warns his disciples against the danger of causing

other believers to sin. What do you think would moti-

vate a Christian to do this?

¿Has notado como siempre tendemos a encasillarnos a

nosotros mismos y a otros? “Nunca podría servir en el

Pensar así es una buena indicación de que no estamos

conversando con Dios sobre cuál es Su voluntad para

nuestras vidas. Si ya hemos decidido lo que debemos y

lo que no debemos hacer, no es probable que oremos

por ello, para discernirlo.

Tenemos que estar abiertos al Espíritu del Señor donde-

quiera que nos lleve, independientemente de lo que

nosotros u otros hayamos llegado a esperar de nosotros.

Los seres humanos llegamos a creer que somos buenos

jueces de lo que otros pueden ofrecer, o de lo que no-

sotros mismos podemos ofrecer. Pero Dios tiene planes

para nosotros de los que no estamos al tanto. Dios llama

a todos a servirle de la manera que más le agrade, y

solo Él puede decidir qué es eso. La corresponsabilidad

diaria exige una contabilidad continua de quiénes po-

demos ser, qué podemos ofrecer, incluso si está fuera

de nuestra zona de confort, incluso si es algo que nun-

ca se nos había ocurrido.

Solo hay una Persona que puede decirnos lo que Dios

quiere de nosotros. ¿Pensamos siquiera en preguntarle?
