LITURGY OF THE WORD What an interesting juxtaposition between the first reading and Gospel today! Moses is telling the people of the importance of the law that he is teaching them, that following it marks them as “wise and intelligent.” Jesus harshly criticizes the Pharisees and scribes for following the letter of that same law! They have not grasped the spirit of that law, so their observation of it is empty. As we hear these words proclaimed today, what can they tell us about how we follow God’s commands?

From our bishops: “Things have gone too far…”

“In the United States abortion is legal throughout pregnancy. Yet abortion is a

violation of human rights incomparable in magnitude and an atrocity for the whole human family. While Roe v. Wade appeared to create a right with some limitations, Doe v. Bolton, which was decided the same day, erased those limitations by creating a "health" exception so broad that it effectively allows abortion for any reason at any time… Most Americans are surprised and shocked to learn about the lack of any meaningful legal limitations for abortion. Most know things have gone too far. Together with those from many other faith communities, we work to bring about a society that recognizes abortion for what it truly is” (A Matter of the Heart -- A Statement of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on the Thirtieth Anniversary of Roe v. Wade)

On September 9, the Church celebrates the feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Frederic heard the call of Jesus to love and serve those who are suffering. And in the poor he found the face of

Christ. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to carry the mission of Bl. Frederic Ozanam by assisting families, providing food, utility, rent and other bills. God Bless You!

Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine

Plan: The Human Body “Pope John Paul II’s theology of the body speaks of the human body as having a spousal significance. This means that the human body by its very nature signifies that we humans are directed to relationship—that we are to seek union with others. It is only in relationship that we achieve a true wholeness as as a communion of persons.”

Mass Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

T he scribes and the Pharisees live according to a defective understanding that disregards God’s commandment and clings to human tradition. Since their hearts are far from God, evils like malice, deceit, blasphemy, and arrogance come “from their hearts.” God endows us with “statutes and decrees” in order to rescue us from our own inadequate ideas and to give us a way to “live, enter in, and take possession of the land.” By allowing our hearts to be formed by God’s commandments, we “give evidence of (our) wisdom and intelligence to the nations.” For such obedience reveals just how close God is to us who wills “ to give us birth by the word of truth.” “Humbly welcome the word that…is able to save your souls.”
