TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1971, the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship completed a survey of the presidents of the national liturgical commissions around the world. How were children doing in the liturgical reform? Probably to their surprise, the cardinals learned of special weekday Masses for children designed to teach them how to participate on Sunday, Masses with separate components for children. The decision was made quickly to develop adaptations for Masses where children were a majority of the assembly. Changes would include a simpler structure, under-standable texts, a simplified Lectionary, more active participation, and most surprisingly, new Eucharistic Prayers. By 1973 the work was done, and with very specific advice from Pope Paul VI, including the need for two new Eucharistic Prayers, the Directory for Masses with Children was published on December 20, a timely Christmas gift for the children of the world. The prayers are the first to be written fresh in a modern language—not Latin, but French and Ger-man—then translated into English, Italian, and Span-ish. With a sense of caution, these new prayers were approved for three years, until 1977, but it soon be-came apparent that they had truly been embraced. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Come to the Feast! – In today’s Gospel, the invitation of the king to “come to the feast” is extended far and wide so that the banquet hall would be full for the wedding feast of his son. Likewise, God’s invitation to partake in the feast of faith is shared far and wide as he calls us to follow him to the kingdom. In

both instances, however, something is required of those who are invited. While there is an expectation that the Lord will feed and nourish us, there is also an expectation that we will be properly attired. For us, that means that we are put to on Christ and share his love with others as we take the responsibility of faith seriously. On Mission for The Church Alive! is an opportunity for us to build up the Church of Pittsburgh as a tangible witness of Jesus pre-sent in the world. Not only are we charged as individuals to answer the call to love God above all and our neighbor as ourselves, but to gather as one in worship and in work and give greater effectiveness to the Body of Christ, the Church. As On Mission unfolds more will be asked of us as we come to the feast at a new place or time or with new people, yet we can trust that God will provide more for us to strengthen us and through us to strengthen oth-ers. ST. JUDE NOVENA—BEGINS THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20TH As you read this lineup

please note the time for the Novena Masses. On more than one evening, the time will be different from the normal 7 PM time. Thus far we have lined up several guest preachers. The dates, times and preachers are as follows… Friday, October 20th— 8:15 PM—Fr. Nichols Saturday and Sunday regular weekend Masses with Fr. Nichols Mon., October 23rd— 7 PM—Fr. Nick Vaskov Tues., October 24th—7 PM—Fr. Jack Walsh Weds. October 25th—7 PM—Fr. Don Ware, CP Thurs. October 26th—7 PM—Fr. Nichols Fri. October 27th—8 PM—Fr. Albie Schempp Sat. (Closing) October 28th—4 PM—Fr. Nichols Also note that during the Novena, there will NOT be 7:15 AM morning Masses on Thursday or Friday. 3rd ANNUAL BLESSING OF BIKES—BICYCLES—ALL KINDS—BRING THEM HERE—TODAY AT 12 NOON– OCTOBER 15TH Bikes, bicycles, motorcycles, even tricycles or unicycles—we will have a blessing of these at 12 Noon—either in the courtyard or by bringing them into Church itself (depending on the number).

It’s no secret that “bicycling” is becoming more and more common and popular in the City of Pittsburgh. And so we thought that it would be a great idea not only to acknowledge that from our central location in such a predominant part of the city, but also, in the name of the Church, to bless the bicycles and their riders. This blessing is also meant to be a prayer for God’s protection for their vehicles.

So—all are welcome, just bring your bike to the area between the Church and the rectory. Bikers are welcome to join us for 11:00 AM Mass. (We will have persons watching over their bikes during Mass.)

(Incidentally, the custom of the blessing of bikes has its origin in 1949 in the Italian town of Ghisallo.)

ALL SOULS’ DAY— THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND In the liturgical calendar of our Church, November 2nd is the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed, which is traditionally called All Souls’ Day. At 7 pm on that day we will have a special Mass to remember all buried from St. Stanislaus Church from November 3, 2016 to November 2, 2017. More information will follow.
