World Mission Sunday Next Sunday Catholic parishes around the globe will celebrate World Mission Sunday and take up a second collec on for the evangeliza on (missionary) efforts of the Church. Jesus gave us the com-mandment to go to all the na ons bap zing in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and to teach everything that he taught us. God wants all people to know his love for them and re-ceive his salva on. Many men and women have responded to God’s call and have le their homes, families and friends to proclaim the Gospel. The collec ons go to support them in the poorest are-as of the world and to make it possible for them to live and carry out this great commission.

Ul mately however, the collec ons are not about money. They are about the transforma on of the world, not just those who receive the message but those of us who support the collec ons as well. When we unite our prayers and our generous financial sacrifices to the needs of the world, God opens our hearts to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit that unites us more closely to himself and we receive the very gi of salva on that we share with others.

Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time The prophet Isaiah tells us that God will provide for all peoples a feast and that he will destroy death forever. He pro-claims that the Lord will wipe away the tears from every face. Because of this, we are told to rejoice and be glad for God has saved us. St. Paul tells the Philippians that it is essen al to rely on God in all circumstances, whether one is living in abundance or in need. He teaches them, and us, that all things are possible in Christ, since he alone is our source of strength. In Ma hew’s gospel, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a wedding feast. The king dis-patches servants to inform the invited guests that the me is ready for his son’s wedding. They refused to come, and even a er given a second chance by the king, they beat or killed the messengers. Enraged, the king has them de-stroyed, and tells his servants that the invited guests were not worthy to come. He tells them to go out and invite to the feast whomever they find. When one of the newly invited guests comes without a wedding garment, the king has him thrown out, explaining that many are invited but few are chosen. Isaiah 25:6-10a Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20 Mathew 22:1-14

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today’s scriptures con nue the theme of God’s invita on to par cipate in his heavenly kingdom. God wants us to share his life and his love. He calls everyone to share in this joy. But because God loves us, he respects our dignity. He has given us free will and allows us to make a choice of whether or not we will accept his invita on.

The Prophet Isaiah gives us the vision of the kingdom. On this mountain (heaven) the Lord will provide a banquet of rich food and choice wines. He will destroy the veil that prevents people from seeing the kingdom in front of them. He will dry our tears and destroy death forever. The people that come to the mountain will rejoice because they know that God has saved them. This is a wonderful promise that is available to everyone.

And yet, everyone does not accept the invita on. In the gospel Jesus tells us the parable of a king who gave a wed-ding feast for his son, invi ng all his friends. Oddly, they refused to come. Some ignored the invita on, and some even beat and killed the servants who brought them the invita on. Shockingly, the king responded by killing the invited guests, saying that they were not worthy. He then invited anyone he could find, the good and the bad alike.

Jesus provides a very stern warning on the consequences of refusing God’s invita on. We are the invited guests. Why would we turn down such a wonderful banquet that God promises? Many of us, like those in the parable, ignore the invita on because we are too busy. We don’t pay a en on to the presence of God in our lives or to the obliga ons that are part of our responsibility as children of God. We “beat and kill” his servants when we refuse to act on God’s Word, in our failure to love our neighbor as ourselves, when we fail to share the gi s and blessings God has given us, when we have a meanness of spirit, when we angrily judge others or their mo ves, when we re-fuse to forgive others or deny them the respect and dignity we claim for ourselves. This “bea ng and killing” of his servants is to deny God; who in turn, Jesus says, will deny us.

The servants go out and bring in anyone they find. One of the guest arrived without a wedding garment. This guest was cast into the outer darkness. Those who show up at the banquet without a proper gi will not be al-lowed to par cipate in the feast. God will ask each one of us, “Where is your wedding garment?” Have we put on Christ and shared the gi s he gave us? Will we celebrate with God in heaven or be cast into the darkness? Jesus invites us to hear the words of Isaiah, raise our eyes to the mountain and join him in his heavenly feast.

Respect Life Month is a reminder to seriously reflect on our knowledge of, and a tudes toward, all life issues. Today’s gospel reminds us that our own salva on depends upon our respect for the dignity of all people, honoring Christ in them by working for God’s kingdom here on earth where all our brothers and sisters have a place at the banquet table.

Our nation celebrates Columbus Day tomorrow. It is a good time to reflect on our history as a nation of immi-grants who came in search of a land of opportunity and a brighter future. My family has been blessed to be in this country for over 300 years. Our scriptures tell us to welcome the stranger and to take care of those in need. I am reminded that those who came first have the responsibility to “pay it forward” to those who come in search of those same opportunities. All parish and school offices will be closed for the holiday.

There will be a second collec on next weekend for World Mission Sunday to support the world-wide missionary efforts of the church. Please see page two for details.

We will celebrate the Confirma on Rite of Enrollment next Sunday with a special mass at 12:30. The young people are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirma on in March. Please keep our candidates, their families and sponsors In your prayers.

The Renew My Church team will meet this Tuesday to finalize our report on the proposed scenarios for the future of our parishes. We will present this report to Bishop Manz and the RMC Execu ve Commi ee on October 20.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Renew My Church: Preparing our Feedback for Cardinal Cupich

The Grouping Feedback & Discernment Team from all for parishes has mee ng to discern the strengths and challenges of the different scenarios that were presented at the Parish Town Hall Mee ng back on September 3rd. We are currently in the process of preparing a summary report of the input and our team’s reflec ons to be presented to Bishop Manz and the RMC Execu ve Commi ee on October 20. This is an opportunity for members of our local faith communi es to provide a voice to the Feedback Summary Report. There is only so much a document can tell someone about the local reali es and possibili es, so having our team members spend me with the Execu ve Commi ee allows us to have a deeper conversa on, sharing our insights about our local parish communi es.

BABY BOTTLE PROJECT Our parish is participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chi-cagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnan-cies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & mon-etary provisions, prayer, and other aid.

Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church, fill it with your spare change, and return it the week-end of October 24 / 25. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note: the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. If you are making a donation by check, please make it payable to: The Women’s Center. Thank you! You can also go directly to their website at: GoTWC.org or call 773-794-1313 to donate.
