INTRODUCTION

Since its inception, the College has striven hard to cater

to the needs of its student community which is largely

from a rural background. It has always tried to make the

campus experience a fruitful and enriching one. Each

year in its life has been a step towards the realisation of

its noble vision. The programs and activities of the

academic year 2015-16 reflect the motto of the College

clearly.

REPORT OF THE YEAR 2015-16

The academic year 2015-16 was significant because of two important

reasons. The first was the promotion of Dr.Y. Ravindranth Rao as Principal

and the second, the College prepared its Self Study report for the third cycle

accreditations.

As per the guidelines of UGC, the College prepared the Self Study report

and sent it to NAAC office within the time frame.

Developments in the College after the submission of SSR for the Third

Cycle of Accreditation.

Change of the Principal

Dr.Y. Ravindranth Rao, Principal, from June 1, 2015, retired from service

on July 31, 2016.

Mrs. Susheela. R. Rai, Associate Prof. of Economics, assumed the charge of

Principal with effect from August 1, 2016.

During 2015-16, the College has achieved significant growth and expansion

in academic activities and acquisition of modern infrastructural facilities.

Measures taken for infrastructural expansion are as follows:

Additional floors, suitably furnished, added to existing buildings

A dining hall, exclusively for girls completed and put to use.

An auditorium- cum- indoor stadium completed with the help of

UGC grants and donations from the Alumni.

Ms.Monisha Gabriela Carvalho secured IV Rank in the university B.A

examinations, held in April/May 2015. This is for the third consecutive year

that our students are securing ranks.

Enrolment:

The College has B.A with two separate batches, B.Com with three sections

including Vocational Course, B.C.A, B.B.M and M.Com.

The total number of UG students on rolls stood at 982 and P.G students 55.

Total strength of students stands at 1037.

In addition to these courses, the College also offers add-on courses in the

form of Certificate course in Dramatics, Yakshagana, Survey Techniques,

besides Diploma in Computer Network Simulation, affiliated to Mangalore

University.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) / Research and Development:

Under the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, lecturers are encouraged to take

up research works, present and publish papers in journals, Mr.Robert

Rodrigues, HOD of History, Ancient History and Archaeology and

Mrs.Vidyalatha HOD of Kannada are pursuing Ph.D studies. Three UGC

funded Minor Research projects sanctioned earlier of which two have been

completed. The proposal for four more Minor Research projects has been

submitted to UGC.

The following special activities were conducted during the year 2015-16.

National Cadet Corps

1. Blood donation camps were organized on August 5, 2015 and

February 10, 2016 in association with NSS, Students’ Council

and Lions and Lioness Club, Brahmavar, Barkur in which 145

and 131 units of blood were donated respectively, to Blood

Bank KMC, Manipal.

2. Awareness programmes on Blood Donation, and AIDS and

Drug Addiction.

3. A programme on Disaster Management.

4. Leadership and life Skill learning programme.

5. Trekking camp to Yaana, North Canara to provide trekking

experience to students, 37 cadets along with ANO participated.

National Service Scheme

In addition to the routine programmes, the following special

programmes were organized by NSS during the year 2015-16

National Youth Day The following programmes were organized by Students’

Council in association with NSS.

a. A procession to publicize the messages of Swami

Vivekananda.

b. A special lecture on Swami Vivekananda –

c. An Elocution competition on Role of Youth in literacy and

group songs were organized

d. Swachhatha Andolona

A procession to create awareness about cleanliness was

organized by Students’ Council.

Rainwater Harvesting

NSS unit of the college in association with Lions and Lioness

club, Brahmavar, organized a programme on the importance of

water resources and the need to conserve water resources.

Street plays to encourage Organ Donation A unique street play was organised by NSS in association with

A.J Hospital,Mangalore, near Brahmavar Busstand to

demonstrate the need and importance of organ donation.

An exhibition of dishes prepared during the monsoons

To enlighten the students about various types of dishes that are

prepared in monsoon season using seasonal plants, leaves,

fruits etc. The exhibition was telecast by various local TV

channels and highlighted in News papers.

An orientation programme to motivate the first year NSS

students

A programme was arranged to provide information about the

role of NSS in all-round development of students’ personality.

A Demo on paddy sapling planting

To provide knowledge and interest in agriculture among

students, a practical programme on paddy sapling planting was

held in association with Regional Agriculture Research

Station, Brahmavar. It was held in the farm field of Mr. Jerome

Rodrigues, Airody, Sastan

Rural Sports To provide information about the rural sports of the past, a

programme was arranged to provide NSS volunteers an

opportunity to play Lagori, Pot breaking, And Tug of war etc.

Diabeties Awareness and Testing programme

Students’ Council, NSS, NCC, Red Cross and Rovers and

Rangers jointly organized a lecture programme on “Diabetes

Awareness”.

Students’ Council (U.G)

The Students’ Council was constituted through direct elections. .

The council organized many useful programmes.

The Council collected Rs.25,280/- through voluntary

contributions of staff and students to help Mr.Santhosh Naik

Muddumane who lost his leg in a tiller accident. The council

organized youth week to commemorate the 153rd birth

anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. A talk by Mr. Shashidhar

Shetty and Sri B.C. Rao, ‘Jatha’, Cleanliness Awareness,

Elocution Competition on role of youth in literacy movement

were the programmes conducted during the youth week. A 3D

film on national geography was also arranged.

Two blood donation camps in association with Lions and Lioness

Club, NSS and NCC, leadership and life skill training, ree eye

test camp, disaster management, talents day, inter collegiate

folklore competitions – Janapada Isiri 2016 were the other

constructive programmes successfully conducted by the council.

Students’ Council( P.G)

P.G. Students’ Council elections were held on 14th August 2015

smoothly under the guidance of Ms.Naina Sarika Sequeira. To

commemorate the 153 birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda

a talk by Mr. Shashidhar Shetty and Sri B.C.Rao, ‘Jatha’,

cleanliness awareness, Elocution competition on role of youth in

literacy movement were organized

HRD CELL

HRD Cell is providing regular training to the students preparing

for competitive examinations. Mr.Jaikishan, Centre Head

Western Institute of Technology, Udupi is the trainer. A Special

programme on “Career opportunities after graduation”, a talk on

“Courses that can be pursued after degree were arranged for the

benefit of Second Year students.

On 4th Feb.2016 a marathon campus recruitment drive was

held by Infosys BPO. A total of 515 students from 16 Colleges

including our College participated in it, 60 students including 12

from the College got selected.

The students of the college have also participated in the

placement drives conducted at other places and 5 BCA students

by WIPRO, one BCA student by Accenture, One BCA student

by Infosys, Two BCA and Four B.Com students by TCS

totaling 25 students of our College got selected in different

campus interviews.

Martial Arts Association

The Martial Arts Association, founded by Shihan. T.P.Baburaj in

1987, has been conducting classes in Karate, twice a week,

throughout the academic year.

Rovers and Rangers Club:

The club has conducted many constructive programmes under

the direction of the Rover and Ranger officers Mr.Raghurama

Shetty and Mrs.Sumalahta.

Mr.Anish Hegde, Rover attended Nipun examination held at

Manipal. He also attended moot camp held at Kondajji Basappa

Bharat Scouts and Guides, Davangere

Three Rangers attended a programme on ‘Gift Your Organ”,

held at D.C.Office, Rajathadri, Manipal.

Rovers and Rangers attended an awareness programme

followed by rally for prevention of diabetes held at KMC

Manipal in association with World Diabetes Foundation.

Orientation, Training programmes, Campus cleanliness, Pravesh

Examination, Accidents Awareness Programme, Crew Council

Day, Start- up India programme were the other activities

organized by the club.

Youth Red Cross Unit:

The youth Red Cross unit of the College was inaugurated on

August 20,2015..The unit organized several programmes such as

Disaster Management Programme, Blood Donation Camp, a

Seminar on Diabetics and Lifestyle in association with NCC,

NSS, Rangers and Rovers of our College. Sixteen students had

participated in National Youth Day at Udupi on Jan 1, 2016.

Fine Arts Club:

The Fine Arts Club has conducted many useful programmes such

as Talamaddale, Gundmi Balayya Sheregar Memorial

Mangalore University Level Intercollegiate Music Competition,

‘SPICMACAY’ programme by Internationally acclaimed artiste

Vidushi, Smt.Manjula Murthy..

Our students have participated in the intercollegiate competition

held at Shri Sharada College, Basruru.

Yakshagana Club

The Yakshagana club with 40 student artistes presented an

episode ‘Sudarshana Vijaya’ on students’ council day.

Drama Club

The drama club presented a drama on College day. The club has

also arranged a Kannada drama “Buguri” by Kinnaramela

Tumuri, Shimoga Dist.

Literary & Quiz Club

Th club organized one day Dr.K.Shivarama Karanth Memorial

Students’ Literary meet which was sponsored by Kota Mitra

Mandali. Students from nearby Colleges also participated in

it.The Club has organized a number of talks in Kannada,

English and Hindi by eminent speakers in which English and

Hindi are the distinct programmes conducted for the first time

under the aegis of the club. In connection with College Day

Celebrations, the Club organized essay and elocution

competitions in English, Kannada and Hindi.

Members of the Club participated in competitions organized by

other Colleges. Ms. Disha D Bhat, II B..Com won the second

prize in Kannada elocution competition held at Poorna Prajna

College, Udupi.

Women’s forum

Women’s Forum headed by Mrs.Rohini M Bhat has

conducted several activities during the year.

An orientation for first year girl students was conducted

resourced by in –house faculty members: Mrs.Susheela R Rai,

Mrs.Rohini M.Bhat and Mrs.Vidyalatha.

An awareness programme on ‘Healthy food practices’ by

Dr.Sridhara Bairy, Ayurveda College, Udyavara,

A lecture on ‘Legal Awareness’ by Ms.Chitra Shetty,

Advocate, Udupi,

A lecture on ‘Teenager and Adults Mental Health’ by

Prof.Nagaraja Murthy, Psychiatrist, Dr.A.V.Baliga Hospital,

Udupi,

A lecture on ‘Diet, Health and Hygiene’ by Dr.Rajalaxmi,

Gynecologist, Santhekatte, a skill development workshop on

‘Handicraft’ by Mrs.Amitha Prakash, of Kannada Dept, a

lecture on ‘Status of Women in Contemporary India by

Dr.Madhavi Bhandary, retired principal, Poornaprajna Evening

College, Udupi are the various useful programmes conducted by

the forum.

Workshop on Handicraft by Women’s forum

A Skill Development workshop on Handicraft was conducted for

the members of the women’s forum on four Saturdays where

students were trained in making dolls and earrings.

Independence Day Celebration

69th Independence Day was celebrated in a grand manner.

Dr.Y.Ravindranath Rao, Principal of the College unfurled the

National flag. Prizes were awarded to the winners of “Kargil

Vijay Divas” competition conducted by NCC. After this NCC

cadets took part in tree plantation programme.

Educational 3D film show

A 3D film on NASA and National Geographic was arranged by

Students’ Council.

Formation of language clubs

To encourage the students to develop their literary skill in

regional languages-Konkani and Tulu, two language associations

were formed.

Konkani Club was inaugurated by Mr. Gurudath Buntwalkar,

Asst. Director,world Konkani centre, Mangalore.

Tulu Club was inaugurated by Mr. Bannanje Babu Amin.

Tulu prasaropanyasa:

A special talk on “Aadhunika Tulu Sahitya” by Dr. Nikethana

was organized under the aegis of Tulu prasaropanyasa Male of

Mangalore University Tulu peetha.

An Inter Collegiate Tulu cultural competition and an exhibition

of antiques were organized in collaboration with Karnataka

Sahitya Academy.

Janapada Isiri-2016-Inter collegiate Folk Art Competition.

To create interest in the folk arts among the students, an inter-

collegiate Folk Art competition was arranged by Students’

Council.

College Counseling Centre

The College has a counselling centre with a qualified counsellor

Mrs.Padma Raghavendra, available for consultation every

Thursday from 9.30 a.m to 11.30a.m. It is sponsored by

Dr.P.V.Bhandary, Medical Director of A.V.Baliga Hospital,

Udupi. An exclusive room has been provided to protect the

privacy of the counseling seekers.

on August 5, 2015.

4. Awareness of Youth Red Cross by Mr. Jayaram Acharya on August

20, 2015.

5. “Mental Health” by Prof. Nagaraja Murthy on September 14, 2015.

6. Women and Modern Society by Mr. Sridhar, Advocate, Kundapura

on March 11, 2016

CRITERIA-I: CURRICULAR ASPECTS

On the reopening day of the College the Principal and staff met to chalk

out a blue print of the academic and co-curricular activities for the academic

year.

As ours is an affiliated College we have to follow the curriculum and

academic calendar prescribed by Mangalore university. In spite of that a lot

of flexibility is available in scheduling the teaching pattern, extension

activity, scheduling of extension lectures, invited talks, seminars and

presentations by the students. Different departments planned their academic

and other extra-curricular activities using this flexibility.

The following teachers attended various workshops relating to curriculum

design development and implementation, organized by the university and

other subject associations.

Mr.M.Sreepada H.o.D Commerce, attended a workshop on

Revised B.Com Curriculum

Mr.G.Balakrishna Shetty, Associate Professor of Commerce, was

the resource person of the workshop on Revised B.Com

Curriculum

Mrs.Namita Tolpadi H.o.D of English attended a subject workshop

at Besant Women’s College as resource person.

Mrs.Rohini M.Bhat H.o.D of Hindi has been appointed as member

of Mangalore University Board of studies in Hindi. She attended a

day’s workshop on new syllabus of Hindi held at University

College Mangalore.

Mr. T.P Baburaj, Associate Professor of English was invited as a

guest lecturer for optional English students at Milgres College,

Kallanpur.

Ms Jyothi of department of Hindi attended a day’s workshop on

new syllabus of Hindi held at University College Mangalore.

The department of Kannada organized an Intercollegiate Program

on “Bharatheeya Kathana Sahithya” in association with Ajapura

Karnataka Sangha, Brahmavar and T.M.A Pai Bharathiya Sahitya

Peeta, Manipal University. Students from eleven Colleges

participated in the programme.

CRITERIA-II: TEACHING LEARNING AND

EVALUATION

The admission process is made transparent by displaying names of all

selected candidates and those on the waiting list. Most of the admissions

done are based on merit. Other considerations are, Women, Minority

community, SC/ST/OBC and Differently abled SC/ST/OBC candidates are

selected as per roaster system of state policy. They are given financial

assistance like fee exemption, scholarship etc.

Department of English arranged educational 3D film show for making

teaching learning process more effective.

Students of Computer applications (BCA) and Office Management and

Secretarial Practice were being engaged in project work.

Department of postgraduate studies in Commerce conducted a competition

on “Designing Advertisement Copy”.

Department of History, Ancient History and Archaeology has conducted

historical tour to Barkur. The department arranged historical film shows.

All the departments conducted remedial classes for slow learners.

Special care has been taken to cater to the needs of advanced learners by

providing personal counseling.

Class tests were conducted, home assignments were given and internal

assessment examinations were conducted to enhance the learning level of

students.

Innovations in Teaching Learning and Evaluation

The College continued the various innovative programmes to ensure

quality in teaching and learning. The following are some of the initiatives

undertaken during this year:

1. ICT enabled class rooms:

All the classrooms are provided with LCD’s. The focus has been on

establishing effective learning environment necessary to address the

needs of learners in a complex changing world.

2. Academic calendar of events drawn up by the teaching/non-teaching

staff.

3. General class wise orientation of students on the reopening day by the

Principal.

4. Remedial classes for slow learners were conducted.

5. Home assignments were given.

6. Students have been encouraged to present papers in the class room

7. Class Tests were conducted.

8. Instruction and information were provided to first year students

regarding the proper use of library facility

The following special lectures were arranged by various departments to

enhance the knowledge of the students:

A seminar on the topic ‘CAPITAL MARKET AWARENESS’ was

organised on 29th

Department of Sociology has organised a university level ‘Dr. TKV

Bhat Memorial Lecture’ in association with Mangalore Sociology

Association on 8th

March, 2016. Dr .V.A. Vinaya Kumar, a noted

philosopher, Prof. and HOD of Philosophy of Goa University. was the

guest speaker.

A guest lecture on ‘COMPANY AUDIT’ by Chartered Accountant

CA Padmanabha Kanchan, Brahmavar was conducted.

A guest lecture by Prof. G S Ramachandra on “Stock market

operations” was conducted for the benefit of III B.Com Students.

Sahaydri College of Management Studies, Mangalore organaized for

. Department of History,Ancient History and Archaeology has

organized a programme on “Preservation of Historical Heritage” at

Udyavara on July 10,2015 in association with Archaeological

Lecturers are encouraged to take up research projects, present and publish

papers in journals, attend workshops, seminars and conferences.

CRITERIA IV: INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING

RESOURCES

During 2015-16 the College has achieved significant growth and expansion.

EXTENSION OF CLASS ROOMS:

Additional floors, suitably furnished, were added to existing

buildings.

New canteen building for girls was completed and it has been put

to use

Completion of Indoor Stadium was completed with the help of

UGC grants and the Alumni.

Two wooden Badminton Courts were inaugurated on September

11, 2015 by K. Abayachandra Jain, Minister for Sports and youth

Affairs

Approach road to College was constructed.

Finishing school

As per the guidelines of the Rastriya Uchhatara Shiksha

Abhiyana(RUSA) the College is training the students in soft skills

as required by the industry.

Rain water harvesting project A 25000 liter capacity sump was constructed by the management

behind the BCA block to harvest rooftop rain water. PVC pipes were

fixed on the roof of the building and a filter was incorporated to the

system near the sump. The filter will ensure that the sump is

recharged only after the first few rains. The water stored in the sump

is pumped to two overhead tanks located on the building and is used

in the ladies and men’s toilets till the end of the monsoon.

LIBRARY:

Our College is a member of UGC N-list for E-Resources consisting

of 6000+ journals and 1, 35,000+Ebooks

We have a total 0f 24,124 volumes in our library worth Rs.

31,30,854.

We subscribe to a total of 69 periodicals which include 10 dailies,

38 general and 21 subject journals. We have a total of 907 books

worth Rs. 4, 05,744 in our PG Library. We have 149 project reports

in our reference section and 220 subject related CD and 15 DVD’s.

College Canteen: Our canteen has been providing homely food to 636 students on every working day, among them 51 students are getting food free of cost. Prof.G.Balakrishna Shetty, associate professor of commerce has been managing and maintaining accounts of college food court.

Women’s Hostel: The number of inmates in the hostel has increased from

16 to 20 this year. Mrs.Sunitha Amin of Commerce Dept continues to be the

Hostel Warden. The inmates of the hostel distributed fruits on the occasion

of Republic day to the inmates of ‘Karunalaya’ an old age home situated at

Doopadakatte, Brahmavar

Achievements in Sports

College men Cricket team has won the Runners up place in the

MUIC tournament (Udupi Zone) organised by Dr.N.S.A.M

College, Nitte.

College Men swimming team has won the 3rd

place in the MUIC

tournament organised by Govt. College, Bettampady.

College Men Chess team has won the 4th

place in the MUIC

tournament organised by Govt.College, Karkala.

We got the 4th

place in the MUIC tournament organised by

St.Agnes College, Mangalore.

Boys Ball Badminton team has won the 1st place in the Udupi

district Dasara Sports meet held at Udupi.

Mr.Sukesh Amin of I M.Com has represented Mangalore

University in the South Zone Cricket Tournament held at

Chennai.

We have hosted MUIC Badminton tournament and Lawn Tennis

Tournament (Men and Women).

Major G.Balakrisha Shetty, Associate Professor of Commerce

has won the Second prize in inter district Lawn Tennis

Tournament held in the College in Doubles.

Scholarships and other assistance to students

SC/ST/OBC students are given financial assistance like fee

exemption,scholarships etc., SC/ST students have been given

facilities like book bank in the library.

Girl students are exempted from the payment of tuition

fees.They are given scholarships also.

Differently abled students are given scholarships and other

assistance as per UGC notification.

Minority community students are getting scholarships. They are

given facilities like book bank provided by the library.

The B.A faculty sponsors the First Year B.A students. They are

given free education, uniforms and free lunch.

CRITERIA VI: GOVERNANCE LEADERSHIP AND

MANAGEMENT

The College is committed to achieve its motto “Towards Moulding

Sublime Life”. The Management and the teachers are putting their efforts to

provide quality education to rural and financially disadvantaged learners.

Merited Students (90 and above) are required to pay only 50% of the

prescribed fees.

Interaction with Stake holders

We have a well organized Parent Teachers Association. A meeting of all the

teachers and parents will be held annually where the parents meet the

respective teachers to know about their children’s performance.

The problem of the students, parents and teachers in the course of teaching

learning are discussed and important points are noted for improvement.

Suggestions and feedback from parents is also sought during their visits to

the Campus and given due weightage.

Alumni

The College has an Alumni association which is supporting all activities.

Recently the 52 students of 1983-86 batch organized a programme in the

College campus and they donated Rs.1, 00,000 to the Food Court.

Society

College is maintaining cordial relationship with the community and has

organized various useful programmes such as Awareness about Cleanliness,

Health and Hygiene, Nuisance of plastic bags etc.

Faculty Development Programmes:

The College regularly organizes annual Renewal programmes to update the

knowledge of the teachers and to equip them with the new techniques and

skillsof teaching. Further they are encouraged to participate in workshops or

seminars, present papers, publish books.

Legal awareness programme – ‘Women and Modern Society’

for the girls was held on March 11, 2016 and the resource

person was Mr Sridhara P S, Advocate, Kundapur by lawyers.

National Cadet Corps

An awareness programme on blood donation, AIDS, Drug

Addiction was conducted in association with NSS, Students’

Council and Lions and Lioness Club, Brahmavar –Barkur

Dr.Hrishikesh, Associate Professor, KMC, Manipal and Dr

Karishma, Medical Officer, Blood Bank, KMC Manipal were the

resource persons.

Two blood donation camps were organised in association with

NSS, Students’ Council and Lions and Lioness Club, Brahmavar

–Barkur in which 276 (145+131) units of blood were donated .

A programme on ‘Disaster Management’ was organized. Mr

Prabhath Kalkur was the resource person and the programme

was sponsored by Lions and Lioness Club, Brahmavar –Barkur.

One day Trekking Camp was organised to Yaana in Uttara

Kannada district in which 37 cadets along with ANO have

participated.

National Service Scheme

To increase interest on agriculture among youth, a demo

programme on ‘Paddy Sapling Planting’ was held in association

with Regional Agriculture Research Station, Brahmavar. It was

held in the farm field of Mr Jerome Rodrigues, Airody.

Orientation to the first year NSS Volunteers was held on July 5,

2015.

‘Rural Sports and Entertainment programme’ was held on July

25, 2015 covering various rural sports and competitions.

A demo programme on ‘Agriculture’ was held in Agriculture

Station on July 30, 2015 for first NSS volunteers.

On August 14, 2015, in association with Lions and Lioness Club,

Brahmavar –Barkur a rain water harvesting programme was held

in Chittari Sri Brahmalingeshwar Temple, Balekudru.

With an intent of ‘Preservation of Historical Monuments’ a

cleanliness programme was organised on August 15, 2015 in

Shri Mahishamardhini Temple, Nilavar.

Forty NSS volunteers participated in a three days ‘Leadership

and Community Development Programme’ organised in

collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra and Brahmavar Sports

Club.

An awareness programme on blood donation, AIDS, Drug

Inter collegiate University Level Fest ‘Janapada Aisiri’ was held

on February 23, 2016

To encourage the student literary skills in regional languages –

Konkani and Tulu – two language associations were formed.

To encourage literary works of association members, it has

brought out two issues of ‘Lharan ani Taran’. First issue was

released by Mr Kishore Gonsalves, on August 20, 2015. Mrs

Sharada Bhat, a Konkani writer gave a talk on creative writing

on February 16, 2016 and also released second issue of the

newsletter. A popular feature film ‘Ujwadu’ was exhibited to the

members on February 11, 2016.

Inter group cultural competition was organized.

A special talk on Aadhunika Tulu Sahitya by Dr Nikethana

under Tulu Prasaropanyasa Male of Mangalore University Tulu

Peeta. Inter Collegiate Tulu Cultural Competition and exhibition

of antiques was organised in collaboration with Karnataka Tulu

Sahitya Academy.

Providing Healthy and Hygienic Food

College food court provides homely food to 636 students on every working

day, among them 51 students are getting free food.

Student beneficiaries increased from year to year.

In the year 2015-16, total amount collected is Rs 1,27,725/-
