PREFACE
The Saint Mary's University Fact Book is a compilation of historical and current data designed to
facilitate internal communication, provide data to use in decision‐making, planning and
improvement efforts, and answer frequently asked questions about the university.
The SMU Fact Book is compiled and maintained by the Office of Institutional Research and
released annually in the fall. The current and previous versions of the SMU Fact Book may be
found online at http://www.smumn.edu/welcome‐tobrst‐marys/offices‐services/institutional‐
research. Requests for additional or more detailed information are always welcome and should
be directed to Kara Wener, Associate Director of Institutional Research.
Data are presented in varying time frames often following mandatory federal reporting
guidelines; notes on data time frames may be found in the tables’ footnotes. The SMU Fact
Book is presented in six chapters: academic profile, enrollment profile, student profile, faculty
and staff profile, financial data, and Nairobi and Jamaica data. Throughout the SMU Fact Book,
data is often presented in terms of the university’s two primary academic units: the College and
the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs (SGPP). The College consists of the
traditional undergraduate Bachelor of Arts program based on the Winona campus.
The SGPP includes continuing education courses, certificate programs at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, the Bachelor of Science completion program, master’s programs, the Education
Specialist program, and three doctoral programs. The SGPP are based on both the Twin Cities
and Winona campuses, with centers in Rochester, Apple Valley, and Oakdale, MN. Also of note,
data from programs offered in Nairobi, Kenya and Mandeville, Jamaica appear separately and
are presented in the chapter entitled Nairobi and Jamaica data.

Between fall 2010 and fall 2011, the university changed its definition of a full-time graduate-level student. In fall 2010 and earlier, a graduate student had to be enrolled in 8 credits or more in a term to be considered a full-time student. In 2011, the definition of full-time graduate student changed to require a student be enrolled in 6 credits or more in a term to be considered a full-time graduate student. This policy shift caused the number of graduate students considered full-time to increase and the number of graduate students considered part-time to decrease.

Undergraduate College Class Size
‐Only courses offered through the undergraduate College are included, i.e., bachelor completion courses are excluded.
‐A class section is an organized course offered for credit, identified by discipline and number, meeting at a stated time or times in a classroom or similar setting, and not a subsection such as a laboratory or discussion session. Undergraduate class sections are defined as any sections in which at least one degree-seeking undergraduate student is enrolled for credit. Excluded are distance learning classes and noncredit classes and individual instruction such as dissertation or thesis research, music instruction, or one-to-one readings. Excluded are students in independent study, co-operative programs, internships, foreign language taped tutor sessions, practicums, and all students in one-on-one classes. Each class section is counted only once and is not duplicated because of course catalog cross-listings.

Part-time Staff Headcount by Ethnicity Fall 2009 to Fall 2013
‐In fall 2010, the ethnicity/race categories were revised as mandated by the Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics.
-Non-Resident Alien is a person who is not a citizen or national of the United States and who is in the U.S. on a visa or temporary basis and does not have the right to remain indefinitely. The "Unknown" category includes staff opting not to self-report race ethnicity information to the university.
-The staff of color include American Indian/Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Black/African American, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, and two or more races. The Percentage of faculty of color is calculated by taking the sum of persons of color over the total number of staff.
- The faculty and staff charts offer unduplicated employee headcount. Employees who have responsibilities in both capacities are assigned as faculty or staff based on their primary responsibility.
