Pastor’s Column With Heartfelt Appreciation

People say one person can’t make a diffrence in the world; but we know that isn’t true because we’ve seen the diffrence Eva, Director of Religiuos Education within our faith community has made in the lives of those around her. Eva has served the Lord with gladness – tirelessly; faithfully and with great compasion. Eva’s last day will be September 22nd. Now as the day dawns on the next chapter in her life, may God continue to richly bless her and watch over her. May the God of peace grant her peace now and always. May Eva continue to be sustained by His Grace and may she always be filled with Joy! Msgr. Joseph F. Rebman, V. G. Fr. Glenn Evers Deacon Michael Stankewicz and the entire staff

Forgiveness

Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?” Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As St. Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way. Your donations are critical to the ongoing vitality and sustainability of our parishes to carry out the Mission of Jesus Christ. We understand the financial strain that many of our parishioners may be experiencing. We ask those who are able to please continue to support our parish. Know that we are always thankful for your generosity, especially during this difficult time. Listen to Catholic Forum every Saturday morning at 11:00 on Relevant Radio 640. Next Saturday, September 19th, tune in to learn about the Share in the Spirit campaign that helps families afford a Catholic school education, when Deb Fols, diocesan Development Director is the guest. The collection will be taken up in the diocese on September 26th & 27th 19 Visit www.cdow.org

Religious Education Dear Religious Education Families, We have a wonderful, life changing year ahead of us! Please make sure you read the weekly Religious Education Newsletter which is emailed to you. This always contains the most up to date information. As you know, religious education at St. Joseph on the Brandywine will be virtual for the fall semester. Pflaum Gospel Weeklies, our catechetical series, has as its goal faith formation for the whole family: the antidote to stress! The focus of this series is the Sunday Gospel: listening to God's Word, learning to apply it to your life and things going on in the real world, and learning Catholic doctrine which springs from that Gospel and the other Sunday readings. You will have both the "in your hand" specific age appropriate versions of the Gospel weeklies and catechism book for each of your children, and will be given a passcode for access to online resources and videos for enrichment. Catechists will be checking in with their students in a variety of ways. Preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and Eucharist and Confirmation will of course be taking place as well. Specifics about Reconciliation and Eucharist sacrament prep will be communicated directly to parents of second graders (as well as any older students preparing for those sacraments). Specifics about preparation for Confirmation will be communicated directly to the parents of our ninth graders. Please return the registration packet which was sent to you by the Religious Ed office. If you did not receive one, please call us and we will be happy to send one to you: 302-656-7185. All registered families will be invited to a Faith Formation Pick-up Party: Drive Thru Disciples on the afternoon of October 4t.h

In 2020, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 20th, under the theme of “I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you.” On this day, catechists are commissioned for ministry to the community. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each baptized person plays in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

2021 Mass Intention Book is now open. Please contact Francine at 658.7017 or email [email protected] for the availability and scheduling of intentions for Masses or Mass cards. At this time, there will be a cap of five mass intentions per family since we currently have fewer masses. Please note that one mass intention on the weekend will always be for parishioners of St. Joseph on the Brandywine faith community, so there will be fewer intentions available for weekend mass intentions at this time.

Program sponsored by St. Joseph on the Brandywine Faith Formation Committee

Over the past several months, the Covid-19 pandemic and the country's response to it have turned our lives upside down, causing illness and death, separating us from loved ones, ravaging the economy, and wreaking psychological havoc. Additionally, the country is facing political and social upheaval--increasingly heated party divisions, protests and at-times violent demonstrations, and targeted attacks on Christian religious freedoms, beliefs, churches, and statues. How is a Catholic to respond to these trying times? Drawing on the wisdom of the Church--both ancient and new--Dr. Peach will analyze the challenges we face from a Catholic perspective and offer time-tested advice for addressing these crises as faithful followers of Christ. Additional details on the Zoom presentation, with instructions on how to sign up, will be sent in two weeks to subscribers of our mailing list. In their statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic Bishops remind Catholics about the call to participate in political life. "In the Catholic tradition," they write, "responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation" (no. 13). Visit ww.faithfulcitizenship.org

What Can You Do If You Are Experiencing Loneliness?

Your doctor can assess your risk for loneliness and social isolation and get you connected to community resources for help, if needed. The following national organizations also offer helpful resources:

Area Agencies on Agingexternal icon (AAA)—A network of over 620 organizations across America that provides information and assistance with programs including nutrition and meal programs (counseling and home-delivered or group meals), caregiver support, and more. The website can help you find your local AAA, which may provide classes in Tai Chi and diabetes self-management.

Eldercare Locatorexternal icon—A free national service that helps find local resources for seniors such as financial support, caregiving services, and transportation. It includes a brochure that shows how volunteering can help keep you socially connected.

National Council on Agingexternal icon—Works with nonprofit organizations, governments, and businesses to provide community programs and services. This is the place to find what senior programs are available to assist with healthy aging and financial security, including the Aging Mastery Program® that is shown to increase social connectedness and healthy eating habits.

Caring for God’s Creatures… If your pet gets sick after contact with a person with

COVID-19, call your veterinarian first and let them know the pet was around a person with COVID-19. Some veterinarians may offer telemedicine consultations or other plans for seeing sick pets. Your veterinarian can evaluate your pet and determine the next steps for your pet’s treatment and care. At this time, there is no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2 to people. COVID-19 is mainly spreading from person to person through close contact. There is no reason to give up or euthanize pets because of SARS-CoV-2.

A Gentle Reminder When you enter this church it may be possible that you hear "the call of God". However, it is unlikely that He will call you on your mobile. Thank you for turning off your phones. If you want to talk to God, enter, choose a quiet place and talk to Him."
