Religious Education Dear Friends, If you have a student who will be in grades K-9 this fall, you should have received a Religious Education registration packet in the mail. This year there are several extra pages which need to be signed and returned, so we do not have an option for online registration. If you did not receive your registration packet, please call Linda in the Religious Education Office, 302-656-7185 and she will be happy to send you one. Registration information for the sacraments of First Reconciliation/Eucharist (grade 2) and Confirmation (grade 9) is included in the regular registration packet. If your son or daughter attends Catholic school and is in grade 2 or 9, please call the Religious Ed Office and we will be happy to send you sacrament registration information. In our diocese, all sacraments are celebrated at the parish to which the family belongs. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work out exactly what Religious Ed will look like this fall. Our desire is to do what is best for everyone, and our Pflaum Gospel Weeklies curriculum provides MANY excellent options and resources, including the option for you to choose home study even if the parish program as a whole should decide on "in person" classes. The most up to date information is found in your Religious Ed newsletter, emailed to you each Thursday. If you don't receive the email newsletter, please call the Religious Ed office and make sure we have your correct email address. Soak up some sunshine and enjoy the rest of your summer! Love and prayers, Eva
Pastor’s Column OUR DEEPEST NEEDS
The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts?” After material needs are satisfied and, in some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multiplied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill.
Random Acts
of Kindness
Write down what you’re grateful for, capture acts of kindness you’ve performed for others, and place them all in a rustic-style Gratitude Jar. Keep the thankfulness momentum going by trying a 30-day challenge and watch your family’s mindset change toward showing appreciation and expressing gratitude. Gather in a special place to review what you’ve written – you’ll be reminded it’s the simple things that make life worth living.
Let Us Pray For You Msgr. Rebman & Fr. Evers continue to fulfill all scheduled mass intentions. Submission of prayer
requests may be sent to the Silent Prayer Community, Cindi Clare at [email protected].
"I thank my God for you
every time I think of you; and
every time I pray for you all,
I pray with joy."
Philippians 1:3-4 (GNT)
Mission Statement
WE, the Roman Catholic Community of St. Joseph on the Brandywine, founded in 1841, profess our belief in the teachings of the Church founded on the Apostles Peter and Paul. We proclaim that it is our mission to increase God’s presence in the world by following Jesus and being faithful to the Gospel. Our mission calls us to:
• JOIN in active, conscious participation in prayer and worship.
• TEACH the way of Christ to youth and adults, imparting a sense of duty and purpose in life.
• DEMONSTRATE our love for each other by reaching out to our neighbors.
• WELCOME and bring together all parishioners to promote a spirit of Christian community.
• PRACTICE good stewardship of the resources we hold in trust.
Enhance Your Worship Experience
In addition to viewing our Mass online, we are now providing a worship aid (password-protected), which you can use to follow the Mass. Visit our website www.stjosephonthebrandywine.org (video section). Note: password-protecting the worship aid is a requirement placed by OCP, which is providing the use of the worship aid. Use your iPhone to follow along if you wish.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process through which interested adults are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic faith and way of life. The RCIA is a communal process and involves a number of stages punctuated by liturgical rites to aid and assist the potential convert toward the final rite at the Easter Vigil at which time they will become full members of the Roman Catholic Church. The most important thing to keep in mind about the RCIA is this: it is not merely a new way to prepare adults for baptism; these are only the first steps. The goal of the process is full communion which means “full, conscious, and active participation" in the Eucharist and in the whole life of the Catholic Faith Community. RCIA helps adults to grow in their relationship with God, become more familiar with Catholic teachings and practices, get acquainted with people in the parish, and get involved in service within the parish or the wider community. Who is RCIA for? Persons in need of Baptism; Persons baptized in another Christian tradition who desire to become Catholic and Persons baptized Catholic in need of First Communion and/or Confirmation.
According to the Catechism: “By the sacred anointing
of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole
Church commends those who are ill to the suffering
and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and
save them and indeed she exhorts them to contribute
to the good of the People of God by freely uniting
themselves to the Passion and death of Christ.” (CCC
1499). In case of serious illness, please contact the
parish priest and request the Sacrament of Anointing
of the Sick for yourself or for a family member. If you
have a procedure or surgery scheduled or otherwise
know that you will be entering the hospital, you may
also ask the priest to celebrate the Sacrament of
Anointing. Please call the parish office at 658.7017.

SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY (1786-1859) August 4
A busy pastor jokingly suggests the secret of John Vianney’s holiness: “He died seventeen years before telephones!” Call they didn’t, but visit they did, keeping Vianney eighteen hours a day in the confessional. Stories abound of reading hearts and exorcisms, but Vianney’s first miracle was getting ordained. Difficulty with studies delayed him, prompting the rector’s apology to the bishop, “So far to ordain just one, especially this one!” The bishop, who could not know he was ordaining the future patron saint of parish priests, replied, “No burden to ordain one good priest!” In Ars, only an elderly handful attended Mass, “praying,” one told Vianney, “for a priest with brains.” But he stayed forty-two years, fulfilling the promise he made the day he arrived. In a sculpture just outside the village Vianney points skyward: “Show me the way to Ars,” he tells a boy, “and I’ll show you the way to heaven.” To someone who feared there was no heaven beyond the grave, Vianney smiled, “My child, it would have been heaven enough to have lived as Jesus’ disciple on earth.”
Papal Blessings
Celebrate the Milestones of Life The Bible speaks of the passing of time by which we mark significant anniversaries of our lives: the days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is there strength labor; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. – Psalm 90:10. Seventy years, eighty years if you are strong – so swiftly flow the years! All the more reason for us to greet each year with joy and to celebrate it with gratitude, albeit a birthday or an anniversary of marriage or priesthood or profession of religious life. Visit www.vatican.va to obtain an Apostolic Blessing from His Holiness Pope Francis to solemnize those special days in your life or for someone that you love and respect. Birthdays: For those reaching 80, 90 &
100 years and above. Weddings Anniversaries: 25, 50, 60 years and above and Anniversaries of Ordinations.
The Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See is making available a downloadable book entitled “Strong in the Face of Tribulation”, containing prayers, supplications and the Pope’s homilies as “a sure support in time of trial”....
