Religious Education Some information and a few requests as we get closer to our first day of religious education: · Don’t forget! September 22, 10am in the Family
Center hall, it’s Family Day for parents and children together, as we begin our religious education year with prayer and a family project and a chance to meet the catechists.
· Please register your children for religious ed classes if you have not already done so!
· If you have questions, or need more information, call the religious ed office 656-7185 before the 22nd. It will make the day go more smoothly for everyone.
· Our theme for the year is “Serve the Lord with Joy!” It helps SO MUCH if in our homes we refrain from grumbling about attending classes Sunday mornings and instead see it as a joyful opportunity to learn more about the God who loves us more than we can ever imagine. Joy is contagious! Looking forward to seeing everyone soon, Peace and every blessing, Eva
Emmanuel Dining Room – Tuesday, September 10 Volunteers purchase and cook 24 chicken thighs and/or bring various desserts (stuffing is made the morning of delivery). Our next date to deliver our meal for Emmanuel Dining Room is Tuesday, September 10. Please have your cooked chicken and desserts at the Family Center by 9 A.M. on that day. If you would like to assist in making the stuffing, we meet at the Family Center at 8 A.M. to do that. We can always use more chicken cookers. Peg Janes (302) 656-3635.
“TITHING IS GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING!”
Our material gifts to God are our way of pledging our time, talent and our very lives for the glory of Christ,
our King. Thank you for your generosity! TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — You sent your holy spirit from on high and thus were the paths of those on earth made straight (Wisdom 9:13-18b). Psalm — In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge (Psalm 90). Second Reading — Paul asks Philemon to accept back his slave Onesimus as a brother (Philemon 9-10, 12-17). Gospel — Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? (Luke 14:25-33).
Pastor’s Column POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES
With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors. A Gentle Reminder Proper Dress for Worship Please show proper reverence for the Mass and the Blessed Sacrament by remembering to dress respectfully. Now, why is our attire here so important? It is not to impress God. God is not impressed with what we wear, but proper dress is important for us; it puts us in the right frame of mind for worship. When we dress up for a dinner we remind ourselves that this is a special occasion, not just any ordinary event. Dressing respectfully for Mass reminds us, and those who see us, that we are about to encounter our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and this is a special occasion.
The music ministry of SJOB welcomes new members to participate as choir members, cantors, or instrumentalists in creating music for liturgy and special concerts through the academic year. Adult choir rehearsals are held regularly on Thursday evenings, 7:15-9:15 in
the church choir loft. Rehearsals resume September 5. Interested new members should contact Mary Ellen Schauber, director of choirs, or Michael Marinelli, director of music and liturgy. Contact information is on the cover of the bulletin. Youth choir rehearsals resume on Thursday evenings from 6:15-7:00 in the Family Center, beginning September 12. Children in grades 2 through 9 are welcomed to participate. Weekly rehearsals can be somewhat flexible. Youth choir sings at the 9:00 AM mass once a month, and participate in special concerts with the parish. Contact Mary Ellen Schauber to register your child.

DRINKING WATER FOR VILLAGERS IN INDIA FUNDRAISER “…..for when I was thirsty you gave me to drink, come enter the home of my father…” Three villages in Fr. Clement’s Holy Spirit parish in a poor, drought-stricken area of S. India lack a
resource for drinking water and need bore-wells or salt water purifiers and rain harvesting tanks. The water is presently trucked in. Also the toilets in the primary school are in a terrible state and need to be replaced. Finally one village is 7 miles from the Parish Center and there is no public transportation so the people have to walk for Sunday worship. Hence he needs a chapel built there. Fr. Clement’s total needs are $20,000. The film “Pope Francis – a man of his word” will be shown at St Mark’s HS Auditorium, 2501 Pike Creek Rd., on September 15th at 3pm. Tickets are $15. Checks for donations or ticket money should be made to St. Andrew’s Charities. A kind donor will match all donations up to $10,000. For tickets contact Michael 302 415 2242.
