My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is a great joy to read and now to share with you this annual report of 2012-2013! In my short visits to Saint Joseph this past summer, as I moved in and began responsibilities as your new pastor, I was reminded why I loved Saint Joseph Parish so much as a seminarian: that reason is YOU! The hospitality that I have personally experienced and the hospitality that I witnessed you share to new parishioners has been wonderful and inspiring. Thank you for your warm welcome to me and thank you for the joy you share with others!

There is much that I look forward to learning from you in the months and years ahead. What was apparent to me even before I moved to South Bend is your unwavering commitment to Saint Joseph Parish. The sacrificial giving towards the Living Our Faith, Building Our Future Campaign tells me that you value the relationship that you have with God and wish to share that with others in the community and with future generations! We worship so that God might continue to transform us to be more like God in our daily lives. As we become more Godlike, we necessarily will become more oriented to service of our neighbor. As our families and parish grow, it is natural to wish to pass our experiences on to the next generation so that they too might grow closer to God and thus serve others. I am very excited about the projects that the parish has envisioned in this campaign. I am grateful to come to Saint Joseph in a time when we are intentionally enhancing our worship, service, and education!

You will find in this annual report an accounting of our income and our expenses. It is important for us to be as transparent as possible. Should you have any questions about the finances, please let me know - I will track down an answer from our finance committee and share my findings with you.

While this report has as its focus the financial dimension of Saint Joseph Parish, let us remember that stewardship cannot be reduced exclusively to our treasure - it involves our time and our talent as well. Saint Joseph has a wide variety of programs and ministries in which we can become involved. For the many parishioners who are actively involved in service, thank you! For those who would like to become more involved, please contact Ms. Becky Guhin, our Director of Stewarship, who

can help put you in contact with the right program or organizing person.

As I learn from you the special gifts of Saint Joseph Parish, please know that I also hope to share what I have come to learn about God. Though I am not an expert and I am a “first-time pastor,” I have been blessed by my parents, education, and Holy Cross formation and ministry experiences. My parents recently reminded me of an art project that I did in the first or second grade. We were asked to illustrate what we thought we would be doing when we grew up. Though I was (and am) far from an artist, I drew a picture of a priest with the caption, “I want to teach people about God and Jesus when I grow up.” This desire to teach and to learn has only grown throughout the years.

If I can ever be of help to you or someone you know, please contact me!

God bless,

Rev. Kevin Russeau, C.S.C.Pastor

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH, in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, is a community of God’s people that has been led by religious of the Congregation of Holy Cross since the foundation of the Parish in 1853.

We are a people of diverse backgrounds united by God through the Gospels, the teachings of the Church, and the pursuit of common goals.

We seek to deepen our personal union with Jesus Christ and to grow as a faith community. We seek to enrich our heritage of care and concern for all, especially for those in need, by being instruments of God’s love and healing to the world around us.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we pledge ourselves to pursue this mission by participation in the liturgical, educational and social ministries of the Church.

We recognize that to be effective, these ministries require spiritual, physical, and financial resources, and we accept our responsibility as Christianstewards to provide them.

Greetings fellow parishioners,

What an exciting time it is for our Saint Joseph community! As we watch the old buildings come down and welcome the new Ackles Parish Center, the future looks bright for our parish and school. It is with the help of all of you that this has become a reality.

A few years ago, under the leadership of Fr. John DeRiso, C.S.C., we hatched a rather challenging plan. We set an auspicious goal of $4 million for our capital campaign to fund four major priorities: an addition to our school for athletic facilities and additional educational space; modest refurbishment in the church building; the renovation of 711 Colfax to become a parish life center; and improving our campus grounds to create more parking as well as green space for the students. We set these goals in the face of uncertain economic times and with both high schools completing their own campaigns. Once again, the Saint Joseph community stepped up! Not only did we hit the mark, we exceeded it raising over $4.36 million!

The commitment of so many has been inspiring to both of our families. Over the years we have seen all of you answer the call to serve. From your stewardship of time and talent in the various ministries the parish offers to the sacrificial giving of your resources when anyone within or outside our community needs help – you have all lived a life of discipleship in such a beautiful way. We are truly blessed to have such a dedicated community and are quite proud of the generous spirit of the parishioners and school families here at Saint Joseph.

As parents, between us, of 13 children that range from college down to kindergarten, we fully appreciate the remarkable Catholic education offered at our grade school under the leadership of our principal Suzanne Wiwi. We are grateful, as well, for the strength of the parish community and the gift of the Holy Cross priests who serve us. These are the foundations upholding Saint Joseph’s mission of worship, service, and education, and they have been invaluable in supporting us in raising our children to be adults strong in faith, character, and intellect. Thank you all for being a part of this place and ensuring its future.

May God continue to bless you and your homes and may Saint Joseph, protector of us all, pray for us!
