This is for non-Japanese speaking children who would
like to learn some basic words and phrases, Japanese
songs and children’s stories. They will also do origami
folding, as well as play traditional games.
This is a club for those who have a strong command of
English and do not speak Japanese yet. Reading and
writing in Japanese will not be taught.
A fee of 500 yen will apply for the purchase of materials
and snacks. Please pay fee at school store after receiving
the confirmation that your child is in the club.

Kendo Club (limit 16)
Students will be introduced to Japanese martial art of
Kendo. Emphasis is placed on proper manners, good
sportsmanship, and safety awareness, as well as the basic
swings of the bamboo sword (shinai) that they will be
required to purchase for approximately 1,800 yen after
the first practice day. The money should be paid to the
school store AFTER the first practice.
Note: Students with two year experience in the Kendo Club will be required to purchase their own full kendo gear (dohgi and armor) and
wear them during each session.

The Elementary Sports Club offers students in grades 1-5,
a balanced program of sports skill development to
encourage their participation in sports and cooperation
with others. Sports skills taught during the club focus on
soccer, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, circuit
training/fitness, floor and field hockey, handball, kickball
or t-ball and group games.
The club is held even on rainy days, with groups assigned
to indoor locations at such times. Come and join this club
to have fun learning sports activities.

Irish Dance
Practice Club (no limit)
A club for boys and girls to practice/learn Irish Dance in
a supportive and non-competitive environment. The Club
is happy to accommodate all levels and children learn at
their own pace. The goals are to encourage personal
development of coordination and of rhythm patterns as
well as teamwork and sportsmanship. Fun performance
opportunities are presented throughout the year. The

Irish Dance
Practice Club (no limit)
Saint Maur Irish Dance Club is most fortunate to offer
joint co-operation with founder of the Ardgah School of
Irish Dance Tokyo, Ms. Tomoko Shirasawa, TCRG, who
comes to Yokohama from Tokyo to teach the children.
Ms. Shirasawa is registered through the Irish Dance
Commission (An Coimisiun le Rince Gaelacha) in
Ireland. Ms. Shirasawa offers a huge benefit to the
children by guiding proper technique and teaching dance
steps at all levels. We are honored to have her on our
team!
The club will still be a volunteer club run by parent
volunteers in the same manner as past years but will be
asking for a nominal amount to pay for Ms. Shirasawa's
services. Parents will receive further information
regarding the exact amount after the number of students
has been determined.

This club is an opportunity for students to work on their
Math skills using the Mathletics computer programme.

the brand new St Maur Fashion Club! While looking at
the history of fashion and fashion around the world, you
will be thinking of your own way to create clothes and
how you can bring something different to the world of
fashion. You will be creating and customizing clothes,
bags and accessories so that your designs and all your
ideas can become reality! Welcome to the Fashion club!
There will be a 1,000 yen initial material fee; however,
students will be expected to purchase additional materials
depending on the projects they choose. Details will be

Build and program robots and then test your skills by
completing robotics challenges! Club members will
learn to program basic robotics behaviors using Lego
Mindstorms NXT robots. Club members can test their
skills by participating in the Yokohama Jr. Robot
tournament (February) and the Robo Sumo Friendly
(May) There is a 1000 yen fee to cover repair and
replacement of equipment. By the end of the year Lego
Mindstorms club members will be well prepared to
participate in next year’s First Lego League. Please pay

competition. Teams of up to ten will work together to

will participate in the Kanto tournament the last week in
December for the chance to participate in the Japan
Nationals in February. There is a 5,000 yen fee to cover

Club
Friendship Volunteers is a charity club that was once very active
at Saint Maur. We have tried last year, restoring this Saint Maur
tradition where students be engaged in voluntary charity
activities. We first worked on collecting pet bottle caps to donate
to ECOCAP to fund vaccination and related supplies to save the
lives of children around the world. The caps are to be recycled
into material to produce new products useful in our lives. Last

This club is for anyone who wants to have fun working towards a
short production of a piece of theatre. No previous acting
experience necessary – just energy, enthusiasm, commitment and
the desire to have fun. Recommended for anyone who is thinking
about doing curricular or extra-curricular drama in high school or
who just want to see what drama is all about. Students will
rehearse a one-act play which will be presented to an audience in

Students will meet once a week and on some Saturdays to
rehearse a full-length production. This is put on for a preview
performance for students and a public performance in September.
Some students from this group will be selected to participate in
the KPASSP Drama Festival in September. In addition,
interested members of this club will be able to take this show to
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the summer of 2012 as part of
the American High School Theatre Festival.

The Arts and Media Club, also known as Saint Maur Voice,
will provide students with an easily accessible and user-friendly
medium to bring the students closer together,
and invigorate school spirit within the student body. The Arts
and Media Club runs under the Blogger server and the URL
of http://stmaurvoice.blogspot.com/. The blog will
be updated on a weekly or cycle basis depending on the time
frame with articles, interviews, photos, and videos about St. Maur
sports, fine arts and student council events that take place. Posts
are not limited to these, as any new ideas will be welcome and
discussed upon amongst the members. Join this club if you are
interested in revitalizing school spirit, bringing the student body
closer together, and making our school events an exhilarating part
of every St. Maur students’ life.

HS ‘Art Club’ – Society of Artists Committed to Helping
Individuals--this club will involve students in responding to the
needs of the local and international community by producing
design and artwork aimed at helping others alongside developing
specialist art skills focused on building portfolios for application
to higher level courses. Active involvement could be used for IB
CAS hours.

Global Issues
Network
Meetings will discuss the 20 targeted Global Issues, identified by
Jean-Francois Rischard. Students will research, make
presentations and discuss these issues.
There will be satellite networking with other schools in Japan,
and the world, for ongoing communication, collaboration and co-
operation, raising awareness of and seeking solutions to some of
the 20 targeted Global Issues.
We will participate in a mini-conference at YIS in Nov.

Contest

categories to participate in. MS and HS students take part each
year.

This is an inter-school Kanto Plain Competition (team event)

he/she cannot participate as a contestant.

This is an inter-school Kanto Plain Competition (team event)
which takes place on 13 Oct at Saint Mary’s. Question categories

Olympians’ Math
Club
Students will prepare for the Math Olympiad contests which will
take place on or near November 15th, Dec. 13

. The preparation will enable students
collaboratively to develop strategies (such as flexibility, intuition,
and creativity) for problem solving. It is hoped that they will
discover the joy and thrill of meeting challenges in Mathematics.

Lunch Recess Club
This group is open to any student in the middle school band
program that plays a traditional jazz instrument. This ensemble
focuses on building basic foundation and key concepts for
performing jazz music. This ensemble will perform at various
concerts throughout the academic year.
