Confirmation Day! May 18th

In the Gospel Jesus tells us that he is the gate. He is the way the truth and the life (Jn 14:6). Jesus uses the analogy of the sheep and the shepherd. Each individual hears the shepherds voice and follows him because he knows him and trusts him. The true shepherd cares for the sheep unlike the hired hand who just cares about being paid and not doing his job (Jn 10:12-13). The shepherd is willing to give his life for the sheep. It’s interesting that Scripture uses the image of both sheep and shepherd to refer to Jesus himself. He is the shepherd who gives his life for those who have been given to him by the Father and he is the Lamb that was sacrificed for them. He is priest, sacrifice and altar, as we hear in Preface V for Easter. What does this mean for us? By virtue of our Baptism we become part of the Lord’s flock. But we still may wander off. Sheep just wander and before they know it they are lost and can’t get back. That happens to us when we get caught up in bad things around us. Why follow those who will do harm to us, to our family, our community, and our country. They are wolves in sheep’s clothing — licentiousness, rebellion, anarchy, impairment, selfishness, pornography — corruption at every turn, causing disruption and distress, all waiting to devour what they can. As St Peter says, “Repent…everyone of you…Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Jesus came so that we “might have life and have it more abundantly.” Take advantage of it. The Lord is waiting at the gate of the sacraments to bring us back by his love and mercy. Confessions are on Saturdays at 3pm and during adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursdays at 3 pm and again at 5:15 or by just asking.

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week are in loving memory of Aldo Corso. This is a gift from Carol & Larry Kurnentz.

A letter from Bishop James F. Checchio

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Risen Lord, We who live in NJ are fortunate to be only a few hours drive from one of our nation’s - indeed the world’s - most magnificent churches: the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. Many of you have, I’m sure, visited “America’s Catholic Church”; perhaps on one of the Diocese’s eleven pilgrimages to the Shrine over our 35 year history. The Shrine is, of course, more than a beautiful church. It is a powerful witness to our Catholic faith and a symbol of the historic importance of that faith in our national discourse, even - perhaps especially - today. As St. John Paul II proclaimed when he visited it in 1979, “The Shrine speaks to us with the voice of all America!” As the Shrine approaches its centennial anniversary (2020), Catholics throughout the country are being encouraged to support the mosaic ornamentation of the Shrine’s central and largest dome; the Trinity Dome. The mosaic, whose preliminary segment was blessed by Pope Francis during his own visit to the Shrine in 2015, will depict the Most Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception, and a procession of saints who have an association with the United States and the National Shrine. Encircling the base of the Dome will be the Nicene Creed. You can see a visual representation of how the Dome will look when completed at www.trinitydome.org. On Mother’s Day Weekend, May 13-14, a collection will be taken up in all parishes in the United States to help complete the Shrine with the completion of the Trinity Dome. As a member of the Shrine’s Board of Governors, I ask you to be as generous with the collection as your means allow so that the Diocese of Metuchen can do its part for this worthy project. I thank you in advance for you support of this church representing the peoples, cultures, and traditions that are the fabric of our Catholic faith and our nation. With my prayerful good wishes for a grace-filled Easter season, I remain Yours in Christ, Most Reverend James F Checchio, JCD, MBA Bishop of Metuchen
