SEVENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

FROM THE DESK OF FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PASTOR…...

GRATITUDE Every year in the months of Octo-ber and Novem-ber a group of people begin to work in our par-

ish, organizing and selling tickets for the car raf-fle and many other prizes. We see how the volunteers are at the end of all the masses, no matter what the weather is, they are always there to sell tickets and some of us will benefit from the prizes. However, they are there too because we all benefit since they do all this for the parish and the school. When everything ends, they share with us a beautiful day in which the winners are an-nounced, we share time together and, for them, after several months, time to rest begins. For many uninterrupted years they continue to col-laborate for the welfare of the parish, that is why we must all thank them for all that they do. The amount of money that every year they collect for the church is admirable, they do that with the help of you who buy the tickets, but their dedica-tion and delivery is admirable. Raffle committee members, we thank you im-mensely and pray that the Lord continues to bless you and us with many people like you. With a sin-cere and grateful heart.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

One of the more difficult things to keep in perspective is pride. It’s not that in itself pride is bad but rather that we become too prideful. Today’s readings are a lesson in humility, a useful antidote to pride which shuts out the vision we need to be Christ for one another. The beautiful simplicity of purpose begins in the first reading. Leviticus makes it clear that God is to be the focus of what we believe to be holy. In humility we are not to “hate our brother or sister,” nor are we to seek revenge or hold a grudge against them. Then in concise words to live by, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” The call to humility and love could not be made more clear. But, and all too often there is a but, we fall short. We need to paste, even if only metaphorically, that last sentence on the wall to remind us what to do when we seem adrift in anxiety or misfortune. Paul tells the Corinthians of the futility of trying to align our reverence with anyone other than Jesus. He makes his point in unmistakable words, “If anyone among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool, so as to become wise.” To be really wise is to know that humble simplicity clothes us in respect that is given by others … not ourselves. Whenever we measure ourselves it can only be against the standard of care and respect for others, all others. Any thoughts of our own success or worth provide us with the proverbial slippery slope. What starts as perhaps innocent pride of self can soon begin to be the thing that separates us from others instead of admiring others. When we emulate Jesus, we see the value of others, reinforcing that God is the inspiration of the Spirit in all. Matthew continues the drumbeat, don’t try to “get by” with the least we can in connections to each other. Instead, as the expression invites, go the extra mile. Our attitude is formed by our respect for the other person, even if they seem undeserving or perhaps even unjust. It’s a matter of being able to take a deep breath, both physically and spiritually, and accept the challenge of being a disciple of Christ. Should we be looking for a easy way out, we get a message in words which seem unattainable, “So be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Fortunately we know this asks more than we can accomplish but it is the effort we make, in itself, not in the end result. Making our way in the world as a disciple of Jesus gives us the way…inviting others to receive and also to share love and care. Together we make the Kingdom present, here and now.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Small things which seem inconsequential add up when we all participate. Try putting a bucket or two outside to collect rain (when it comes) and use it to water plants. It’s free even if not always reliable :-).

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL P. SERGIO OVANDO, PÁRROCO….

AGRADECIMIENTO

At our winter Spirit Rally the 8th grade girls bas-ketball team played the 8th grade boys. The

girls were outsized and out-numbered but proved to be great ball handlers. Additionally, students from each class participated in a free

throw competition. Student Council planned and coordinated the rally. A great time

was had by all.

Save the Date---eWaste Drive The next eWaste Drive sponsored by our Green Team will be Saturday, March 28. Please save those appliances and tech items that you no longer use. Help St. Catherine School and our environment at the same time. The money raised from this event helps fund ceiling replacement in classrooms which en-hance the energy efficiency of heating and cool-ing the rooms as well as improving acoustics. This is also a great opportunity to get parent hours or student service hours. Contact Karina Salinas at [email protected].

A Legacy of Faith 2019-2020

The 16th Annual Appeal is well on its way! The school’s goal is to raise $65,000 this year. The funds help with annual operational costs. We are moving in that direction. You can still help! For more information regarding our Appeal, please contact Jeff Layne, Development Director at [email protected] or 779-9950. Funds raised by our Annual Appeal help bridge the gap between tuition and the cost of educat-ing each student as well as providing funds for new programs and tuition assistance.

St. Catherine School has been closed for winter break .

School reopens on February 24.
