Term 3 -Week 9 - 19th September 2018
We have ever confided largely
in Divine Providence and shall
continue to do so.
Catherine McAuley
Next Thursday September 27th we will hold our Annual
McAuley day to celebrate the life of our founder and to engage
in spiritual, educational and social activities. During the 9:30am
Mass we will be presenting our McAuley awards to one student
from each grade who we think most embodies the
characteristics of Sister Catherine McAuley. This is a very
difficult task for grade teachers and is akin to a parent
nominating a favourite child! The days activities are listed
elsewhere in this newsletter. Included in the day is a free
sausage sandwich lunch in appreciation for all those students
and parents who have been so generous this term with drought
relief, brain cancer fundraising and monster raffle etc.
On other matters I have noticed a lot of extra parents now using
Byng Street as the school drop off and pick up area. There are
certainly up to 10 available spaces at any given time and the
children appreciate being able to walk to their morning play
area. As well there is no temptation to use a "No Stopping
Zone" as a drop off area.

Whole School Assembly: KD will present their work at the next Whole School Assembly on Friday 28th
September commencing at 12:30pm in Kenna Hall. All welcome.
Year 6 Canberra Excursion: The Year 6 teachers have begun preparation for the Year 6 Canberra excursion that
will take place on Thursday 1st & Friday 2nd November. As it is a big responsibility to take over seventy children
away over night all Year 6 children must behave appropriately at school and all school functions to experience the
great privilege. Parents of children who are not exhibiting expected behavior will have to agree to a contract that
stipulates that the child won’t attend this excursion if their behavior continues to be unacceptable.
OSCH at McAuley: The McAuley OSCH has been up and going this term. It is going very well with numbers
growing. The relaxed setting, great afternoon tea, option of outdoor and indoor play has seen all children
attending being very happy. Thank you to Amy and Renai from Centacare for all her work and energy in running
this wonderful service up for the families of McAuley and our wider community. After school care is currently
on offer from 3:00pm – 6:00pm and before school care from 7:00am - 9:00am. Holiday care will be available in
the school holidays. For any information on McAuley OSCH please call Amy or Renai on 0439631686.
Kindergarten Enrolments 2018: The enrolment process has finished and letters of offer have been sent out.
Orientation for Kindergarten students will begin on Thursday 25th October with a parent evening. The children
will then visit the school for three consecutive mornings on Friday 26th October, Friday 2nd November and Friday
9th November.

McAuley School Rules
BE RESPECTFUL - BE RESPONSIBLE - BE SAFE
Focus of the fortnight: We are Responsible and Safe when we leave the school grounds. Being Responsible
and Safe during afternoon routines whether children catch buses, get picked up or walk home is very important.
All children teachers and parents must be aware of their responsibilities and the school’s expectations during the
afternoon routine.

Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A: In St Mark’s Gospel this weekend Jesus’ disciples are caught up in a
competition. They are arguing about who is the greatest among them. Jesus catches them out though, and they are a little
embarrassed to admit to their actions. Competition can spur us on, but it also can tear us up inside. Why can’t I look like
her? Why can’t I score tries like him? People often see themselves as failures because they constantly focus on how they
don’t measure up to others. We need to stop comparing ourselves with others and start loving ourselves for who we are –
like God loves us. According to Jesus your value doesn’t come from appearance or popularity or how well you compete. It
comes from God. And if you really want to feel great, go out into the world and show the people who are not valued just
how valuable they are. Is your talent making kids laugh? Develop it. Are you good at listening and offering comfort? Do that
more often. Maybe you like building things. Give your time to help build something for someone who lives on the margins.
Maybe this week we could spend a little time thinking about the things we are good at, and how we can put those skills to
good use for others.
First Reconciliation: The children in Year 2 will be receiving their First Reconciliation early next term. This Sacrament
will be celebrated over four dates and in both St Mary’s Church and St Joseph’s Church: Nov. 13, 15, 20 & 22. In
preparation for this Sacrament, Parents are expected to attend a Parent Meetings for First Reconciliation. If you didn’t
attend the meeting this morning, please come along tomorrow night, Thursday 20/9 at 7pm in Kenna Hall. It is very
important that all parents of First Reconciliation Candidates attend a meeting.
Diocesan Youth Festival: The annual Diocesan Youth Festival RISE commences
Thursday 11th October from 10am and concludes at 3pm, Friday 12th October at St
Joseph's Conference and Heritage Centre, Perthville. RISE is a chance for Year 6 to
Year 9 students to spend time together, have fun and learn more about their faith. It
will be an unforgettable experience! Cost for the two days is $120, but early bird reg-
istration is only $110. Payment to be made through the Parish Office or via the link

Christmas Art Competition 2018 The launch of the Diocesan Christmas Art Competition will take place tomorrow at the
Catholic Education Office in Bathurst at 11am. The students in Year 5 and 6 who were finalists from our school will travel
by bus to Bathurst to represent us at this opening. Mrs Croke will accompany them. I would like to thank Mrs Croke and
Mrs Hughes for all the hard work they have put into helping our budding artists in preparing their entries for this
competition. It has been a long process, beginning in Term 1. We wish our finalists well for this competition.
Catherine McAuley Celebration Day: Our celebrations for McAuley Day are nearly here! Next Thursday we will celebrate
our Patron, Venerable Catherine McAuley with a day of celebration. On Thursday 27th September we will start with Mass at
9.30am, followed by a host of activities, including a sausage sizzle, Trivia competition, the McAuley ‘Gift’ (race) and the all
-important Class Tug-a-war competition! We would love you to join us for Mass on this very special day, and stay for some
of the fun!
God Bless,
Robyn Petty

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 5?
"A Change of Heart" is the topic for our Religious Education unit on Creation in Year 5. With our change
of heart, 5C have decided we need to change some of our
habits and choices at school as well.
Lily Davis is leading one group to investigate how often we
use straws at school and are they really necessary? Children
can participate in a survey next week to see if it really
matters if we don't have a straw to drink our milkshakes.
5C are also trying different ways to manage our recycling at
school. They are trialling using smaller bins that children can see into and that are well labelled.
Watch out next term for days we can bring a "Nudie Lunch". No wrapping!!
Vegie Patch
With the Gardening Club, 5C are helping get the veggie patches going.
Watch out for what we hope will be a bumper crop of veggies we can use in
the tuckshop and cooking club in the summer!
Return and Earn
5C thoroughly enjoyed a delicious lunch with Pizza's from Alfio's, after collecting all
bottles that could be returned. We encourage all families to participate in this initiative.
Containers are being set up for all students to put their bottles in and then taken to the
Return and Earn Unit. Our money will go to the Missions next term and to resources for
our classrooms!
Space
The Science unit Earth's Place in Space has been exciting! An excursion to Parkes next
week to visit the Radio Telescope will help consolidate all we have learnt.
Cooking Club!
Last week children enjoyed making yummy meringues from all the lovely eggs being
laid by our reliable chooks.. Children weren't sure if they liked the mixture before it
was cooked or after! Yum!!

POLDING ATHLETICS IN NEWCASTLE
Congratulations to our students who competed in the Polding Athletics last week in Newcastle: Belvia
Bryant, Baxter Cook, Holley Dunn, Taj Jordan, Rachel Masling, Lachlan Newman, Jorja Taberner,
Tomma Tancred & Jordan Wykes. Thank you to Maddi Colquhoun and Becky Hughes for attending as
team mangers. From all accounts the children (and teachers) were well behaved and a credit to our
school. Congratulations to Lachlan Newman and Taj Jordan who have now been selected to represent
Polding at the NSWPSSA Athletics Carnival. What an amazing achievement.

So be a Lunchbox Legend…. enjoy a range of appropriately portioned foods from all the food
groups…. your body will truly thank you for it!
Cherie Rivas Catherine McAuley Parent & Partner in Health & Wellness.
Be a Lunchbox Legend!
Just because that fancy new lunchbox has got 5 or 6
tricky little compartments in it, doesn’t mean you have
to fill each and every one of them for your child’s lunch
each day.
While it’s true that children learn better when they eat
well, ‘portion distortion’ (over-estimating serving siz-
es), and generally overeating (even when it’s nutritious
food), is a contributing factor to our childhood obesity
crisis.
So what makes an ideal lunchbox? Aim to include a
range of appropriately portioned foods from all the food
groups:
Why Examples Recommended Daily Intake
(2 – 11 yrs)
Fruit Loads of vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and natural sugars for energy.
Fresh fruits where possible or tinned fruit in natural juice (not syrup).
Dried fruit in small portions only.
1 – 2 serves per day
Vegetables
Packed full of vitamins, miner-als & dietary fibre
Snack size pieces such as cherry toma-toes, capsicum strips, snow peas, carrot, celery and cucumber sticks. Salad vegeta-bles for sandwiches.
2.5 – 5 serves per day
Grains & Cereal
Carbohydrates to fuel the body and brain.
Opt for whole grain where possible: breads, flatbreads, rice, pasta, crisp-breads, crackers, pretzels.
4 – 5 serves per day
Dairy (& vegetarian alterna-tives)
Calcium for growing bones. Cheese, yogurt, unflavoured milk. 1.5 – 3 serves per day
Lean meats, fish, poultry, egg, nuts and legumes
Protein for growing bodies. Cold meats or chicken. Tinned fish, tofu, boiled eggs, baked beans.
1 – 2.5 serves per day.
