NO COMPARISONS
How many times have we read or heard about someone who's gotten into trouble--maybe even fired from a job--because of a brush with the law? While our "Christian" minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, "I'm glad I would nev-er do anything like that." And perhaps we wouldn't. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God's eyes? Today's readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else's wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else's behavior as a way of reflect-ing our own goodness.

Luke 18:9-14: Pharisees and Tax Collectors
Years ago when I was doing my research on the history of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), I came across a very good commentary on one of the Council’s documents, Nostra Aetate—on the relations between the Catholic Church and NON-Christian religions. The Jews were the main emphasis of this document: the Church could no longer stay silent on the question of our Jewish brothers and sisters after the Holocaust claimed the lives of six million Jews! The main author of this commentary (if I remember correctly) was a German scholar and a convert to Catholicism from Judaism. Anyway, as I recall vaguely, his description of the Pharisees was quite perceptive. They were not as inflexible and rigid as we sometimes think. Rather they were quite up-to- date with society, willing to adapt Judaism to new circumstances. For that reason, they were able to survive after the destruction of the Temple by the Romans (70 AD); whereas the Sadducees, the other major group that was more conservative, vanished. Even though in some passages in the Gospels, Jesus seems to come down hard on the Pharisees, they should be remembered for their merits—St. Paul himself was a Pharisee before his conversion… With that in mind, I do not want my audience to have negative preconceived notions about the Pharisees. How about the tax collectors? Those people and the sinners usually go together in the Gospels: because by the very nature of their professions, they were sinners. They were the most notorious people during the time of Jesus. They were Jews, but collected tax for the Romans. They lived off the money of their own people while working for the for-eign invaders. In a sense, tax collectors were those who willfully renounced their own religious and ancestral heritage. That is why the Pharisees (and just any ordinary Jew) reacted strongly whenever Jesus ate with sinners and tax collec-tors… Against this background, we come to today’s Gospel reading about the proud Pharisee and the repentant tax col-lector. As mentioned above, we should not just categorize all the Pharisees in this negative light. This is a parable about one certain Pharisee and one tax collector. In any case, anybody who heard that parable from the mouth of Jesus would think that it is the Pharisee who would be justified. But not so quick… the tax collector is the one justified. Jesus indeed came to seek what was lost and to bring healing to the sick. The preaching of Kingdom of God by Jesus is really a re-versal of ordinary human expectations… No wonder why we often hear these phrases in the Gospels: “The first shall be last and the last shall be first;” and “whoever humbles himself will be exalted…”

Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

St. Barbara’s News
WORLDMISSIONSUNDAYWorld Mission Sunday is a call to local Churches on every continent to rediscover the urgent necessity to face the multi-ple serious challenges of our times in the light of the Gospel. The Lord addresses the missionary call to every baptized Christian. Established Churches have consistently supplied material means, priests, religious and lay believers for service in overseas missions. This has benefited not only the strug-gling mission Church, but also those who shared and served. Today, considering the crisis of the family, the decreasing number of vocations coupled with the progressive aging of clergy and religious, and questionable financial security, there is danger of looking with less hope to the future and slackening in missionary endeavor. For precisely these reasons it is time to show our confidence in God who accomplishes his plan of salvation.
Newly evangelized Churches are also called to mission. Many young dioceses are rich with great numbers of seminarians and religious which they exchange as gifts to the traditional, established churches. World Mission Sunday raises the awareness of the universal nature of Christ’s call to spread his Kingdom to the ends of the earth. “The Church is missionary by her very nature,” John Paul II writes in his Encyclical Redemptoris Missio. “For Christ’s mandate is not something contingent or exter-nal, but reaches the very heart of the Church. It follows that the universal Church and each individual church is sent forth to the nations.”
This special collection provides regular annual assistance to about 1,100 mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, and remote parts of South America to help support pastoral and evangelizing programs, catechists and catechetical work, the building of churches and chapels, the work of Religious Communities in health care and education, and communication and transportation needs. This fund is distributed in its entirety each year to ensure that the poor of the Missions receive help and the hope that comes from knowing the love of Jesus Christ.
SECOND COLLECTION WILL TAKE PLACE THIS WEEKEND OCT 22 & OCT 23 FOR THE WORLD MIS-SION TO HELP THOSE IN NEEDS IN AFRICA, ASIA, AND SOUTH AMERICA. ENVELOPES CAN BE FOUND IN THE VESTIBULES AND IN THE PEWS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY.
