Collect of the Day

Officiant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Word of God

First Reading Ecclesiastes 3:1-7 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak. Reader The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 126

When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.* Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy;* then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”* The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.* Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the watercourses in the Neger.* May those who sow in tears reap with songs of joy.* Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed,* shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.*

The Epistle

A Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians Philippians 4:1-9

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy

The Gospel

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to

John.

People Glory be to you, Lord Christ. John 21: 9-17 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Homily The Rev. Timothy Boggs

A period of silence is observed. Prayers of the People The Leader and People pray responsively

In peace, we pray to you, Lord God.

Silence

For all people in their daily life and work;

For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone.

For this community, the nation, and the world;

For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace.

For the just and proper use of your creation;

For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression.

For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble.

For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy.

For the peace and unity of the Church of God;

For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth.

For Michael, our Presiding Bishop, and Thomas, our Bishop; and for all other ministers, lay and ordained;

For all who serve God in his Church.

For the special needs and concerns of this congregation, especially those we name now silently or aloud.

Silence

The People may add their own petitions

Hear us, Lord;

9

For your mercy is great.

We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life, especially those we name now silently or aloud..

Silence

The People may add their own thanksgivings

Our gratitude runs deep;

And we praise your Name for ever and ever.

We pray for all who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom. Silence

The People may add their own petitions

Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them;

Who put their trust in you. The Lord's Prayer Officiant

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us we are bold to say,

Celebrant and People

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Officiant A concluding Collect. The Ending of a Pastoral Relationship

Rector:

On the nineteenth day of November, 2011, Bishop Stephen T. Lane inducted me as rector of Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church. I have, with God’s help and to the best of my abilities, exercised this trust, accepting its privileges and responsibilities. After prayer and careful consideration with you, our Bishop, and my family, we now arrive at the season for my retirement.

Warden:

The Warden invites the congregation to unmute themselves

Our worshipping family is constantly changing. Loved ones come and go in our community’s life. Today we recognize the retirement of our Rector, The Reverend Timothy Boggs.

Do you, the people of Saint Alban’s, recognize and accept the conclusion of this pastoral relationship?

People: We do, with God’s help.

Rector: Let us pray.

Silence

Page 11: Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church Cape Elizabeth, Maine · Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church Cape Elizabeth, Maine Third Sunday after Pentecost: June 21, 2020 9:30 a.m. A gathering

11

O God, you have bound us together for a time as pastor and people to work for the advancement of your kingdom in this place: We give you humble and hearty thanks for the ministry which we have shared in these years now past.

Silence

We thank you for your patience with us despite our blindness and slowness of heart. We thank you for your forgiveness and mercy in the face of our failures.

Silence

Especially we thank you for your never-failing presence with us through these years, and for the deeper knowledge of you and of each other which we have attained.

Silence

We thank you for those who have been joined to this part of Christ’s family through baptism. We thank you for opening our hearts and minds again and again to your Word, and for feeding us abundantly with the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of your Son.

Silence

Page 12: Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church Cape Elizabeth, Maine · Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church Cape Elizabeth, Maine Third Sunday after Pentecost: June 21, 2020 9:30 a.m. A gathering

12

Now, we pray, be with those who leave and with us who stay; and grant that all of us, by drawing ever nearer to you, may always be close to each other in the communion of your saints. All this we ask for the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Silence

Then the Minister may express thanksgiving for the time of the tenure, with its joys and sorrows, and state hopes for the future of the congregation. The Minister may also express his/her thanks to the representatives of parish organizations and offices, and indicate that those organizations will continue to function. The Minister may then be joined by members of his/her family, who may express what life with the congregation has meant to them. One or more representatives of the congregation may briefly respond to the Minister and family, and bid them Godspeed.

The Warden Representative may then indicate what provision has been made for the continuation of the ministries of the parish. He/she may declare the name of the persons to have ecclesiastical responsibility, and may request, if it seems appropriate, other leaders in the parish to continue their leadership until a new iinterim is installed. He/she may express his/her feelings about the ministry now coming to its end.

Warden:

The Reverend Timothy Boggs, do you release the people of Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church from their pastoral relationship with you?

Rector:

I do, with God’s help.

Warden:

The Warden Representative invites the congregation to unmute themselves

Father Tim, we wish you joy on your journey as you begin retirement, surrounded by our love and by the promises of God, the presence of Jesus Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

People:

Amen!

The departing Minister then says

The Peace Officiant The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People And also with you.

The Ministers and People may greet one another in the name of the Lord.
