Officiant Let us pray.

We thank you, O God, that you have again brought us together

on the Lord’s Day

to praise you for your goodness and to ask your blessing.

Give us grace to see your hand in the week that is past,

and your purpose in the week to come; through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Officiant Dear friends in Christ,

as we turn our hearts and minds

to worship almighty God,

let us confess our sins.

People Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not

loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and

we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us,

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your name. Amen.

Officiant Merciful God,

grant to your faithful people pardon and peace,

that we may be cleansed from all our sins

and serve you with a quiet mind;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

People Amen. 4

Collect Almighty Gd, your Apostles and saints have striven to

live in the light of Christ Jesus, who you sent with the

message of peace.

For many the message of peace came with the way of the Cross.

We remember today saints who have witnessed to you love

with their lives and their deaths:

St. Peter and Paul, St. John the Baptist, and St. Alban of Britain.

Inspired by their word and example, and made one by your Spirit,

May your Church ever stand firm upon the one foundation,

Jesus Christ, Our Lord;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

One Gd, now and for ever. Amen.

READINGS FOR THE DAY

First Reading (St. Peter & Paul)

Reader: A reading from the Prophet Ezekiel

For thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them

out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep,

so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they

have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out

from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their

own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and

in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the

mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good

grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.

I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the

Lord GOD. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up

the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy.

I will feed them with justice. (Ezekiel 34:11-16)

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

Thanks be to God.

Psalm (cantor) 85:7-13 (Birth of St. John)

7 Show us your mer-\cy, O Lord, *

and grant us \your salvation.

8 I will listen to what you, Lord \God, are saying, *

for you are speaking peace to your faithful people and to those

who turn their \hearts to you.

9 Truly, your salvation is very near to \those who fear you, *

that your glory may dwell \in our land.

10 Mercy and truth have \met together; *

righteousness and peace have \kissed each other.

11 Truth shall spring up \from the earth, *

and righteousness shall look \down from heaven.

12 Lord, you will indeed \grant prosperity, *

and our land will \yield its increase.

13 Righteousness shall \go before you, *

and peace shall be a pathway \for your feet.

Amen.

Reading

Reader: A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians:

So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the

body we are away from the Lord -- for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do

have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the

Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For all

of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ. (II Cor 5:6-10a)

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel (St. Alban)

May God be with you.

And also with you.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

Glory to thee, O Jesus Christ.

"Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one

who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a

prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous

person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold

water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple -- truly I tell you, none of

these will lose their reward. (Matthew 10:40-42)

The Gospel of Christ.

Praise to you, O Jesus Christ.

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed

Officiant Let us confess the faith of our baptism,

as we say,

I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again

to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

For all who proclaim the gospel, and all who seek the truth.

For Melissa our bishop, and for all bishops and other ministers;

For all who serve God in his Church.

For our own needs and those of others.

Silence.

Hear us, Lord;

For your mercy is great.

About the Readings

June 29 is the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul who were both martyred in Rome by the

Emperor Nero. Last Sunday would have been our patronal feast except that it was

superseded by the Indigenous Day of Prayer. This week the feast of the birth of John

the Baptist also occurred. So your Vicar decided to pull them all together into one

Sunday, and will have a second “Saints of the Summer” sometime in August.

Readings today were chosen from the readings of the three holy days, the collect for

Sts. Peter and Paul was ‘massaged’ and one lesson was chosen to reflect the sense of

the ministry of these saints.

Ezekiel was a prophet after the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylon. Many of his

prophecies looked ahead to a time when Israel would be restored. In today’s lesson we

hear a condemnation of the shepherds of Israel – her kings and priests – assigning

blame to them for the conditions that led to Israel’s defeat, literally and theologically.

But Gd also promises to be their Good Shepherd, to gather them back together, heal

them, feed them and rule with justice. This passage is one that is thought of with

expectations of the Messiah, and we can also perhaps see the tradition Jesus was

drawing upon when he used the metaphor of the Good Shepherd to proclaim his

ministry in John’s Gospel.

A psalm seeking Gd’s salvation and rejoicing in its promise appropriately responds to

Ezekiel’s message.

In second letter to the Corinthians Paul speaks of he and his companion’s confidence

in Gd’s help in their ministry. He also speaks to the manner of life they live, following

the way of Gd’s covenant in light of the teachings of Jesus, and so they also have

confidence in their place beyond the grave as well as in this life. The reading seemed

most appropriate for the saints and martyrs we remember today.

From the Gospel of Matthew we hear Jesus’ instructions to his disciples and the

crowds around them makes clear that those who minister and preach in his name

should be welcomed as his representatives, and that those who do so will be rewarded.

These words can be a comfort to those who think what they offer is to little, and strong

encouragement to those who might pull back in fear of the cost of their help (to avoid

persecution). This reading is particularly appropriate for St. Alban, who hid a Christian

priest from the authorities.
