Transcript of ANNUAL REPORT 2015 - Alpha Supported Living … REPORT 2015 Providing Support. ... Jackie D’Souza...
The day in and day out life of a nonprofit can be exhilarating, exhausting, satisfying and frustrating all at the same time. We are constantly trying to meet various demands, all while living within the constraints of a government-funded program. It often seems like there is not sufficient time to reflect on all that has been accomplished and take stock of both the challenges endured and the rewards of the lives changed through the services provided. Now is that opportunity.
Nonprofits, like Alpha Supported Living Services, continue to face the nearly unattainable challenge of serving more people with resources that have not kept pace with continually increasing costs. Our dedicated employees, board, donors, families and community partners have stood with us as we reached new heights, created new systems to meet the support needs of those we serve, and expanded to meet the needs of those wishing to receive our services. All of this at the same time we are facing challenges beyond our control. Somehow, we have made the seemingly impossible, possible.
For our Seattle programs, we have been faced with the Seattle Minimum Wage Ordinance that mandated a minimum wage of $13 per hour starting January 2016 and will increase to $15 per hour effective January 2017. Our funding comes from the state legislature and our rates are set in a manner that would only allow us to pay our valued employees around $11 per hour. Through our fundraising efforts and remaining administratively lean, we are able to shift funds toward our Direct Support Staff to increase this wage and in Seattle, to the minimum wage mandate. We are looking to 2017 after the legislature, once again, decided to not increase funding to meet this mandate. We are caught in the middle of wanting to pay staff a livable wage and to meet this mandate, but not receiving the state funding to pay the increased cost.
If that was not enough, we also continue to be asked to serve more people through our various programs and contracts. This last year, we were approached to assume the contract for an agency when the Developmental Disabilities Administration decided to discontinue the contract with this other agency due to concerns. With just 12 days notice, we assumed the care for 27 individuals with developmental disabilities in Snohomish County, hired over 100 of the former agency’s employees, purchased and leased vehicles for each of the homes, negotiated the contract, and transferred the deed for one of the properties. Thanks to the tireless work of our dedicated
employees, we were able to accomplish all of this with little disruption to the clients being served.
With all of this going on, maintaining consistent quality care has been first and foremost on our minds and our top priority. Was it challenging? Yes. However, 2015 will go down as a year that we faced these challenges and made them opportunities for growth and future possibilities. These are challenging times, but Alpha will continue to put the client first and find ways through the obstacles. We never rest on our accomplishments or accolades, but instead strive to lead the way and provide support, empower choices and encourage individuality as we have since 1974. To all of our families, friends, employees, volunteers, community partners and donors, we thank you for your continued support and vital role in all that we do on a daily basis.
