Noise Concept

 Noise means any unwanted sound.

It is hazardous at high intensity and long exposure.

Noise Levels are Expressed as Decibels (dB).

1+1+1 does not equal to 3 1+1+1 does not equal to 3

The Decibel is a logarithmic unit of measure so we can’t simply add numbers.

Noise Concept

 High Frequency Noise

- Deflects Easier, Easier to Shield and Easier to Insulate

- Power Tools, Saws, Grinders

- Sudden Release of Pressure

- Other High RPM Equipment

 Low Frequency Noise

- Harder to Shield and Harder to Absorb

- Power Presses

- Pumps, Compressors

- Other Low RPM Equipment

Noise Dose

Noise Dose.

How Loud, How long, How many times???

Noise Dose

Regulated as an 8 hour Time Weighted Average (TWA)

An 8 hr TWA of 90 dBA is designated as a Noise Dose of 100% (OSHA)

Noise Dose – Rule of Thumb

For each 5 dB increase in noise, in order to be equivalent to the previous dose you must half the allowable exposure time.

95 dBA over 4 Hour TWA Period

100 dBA over 2 Hour TWA Period

105 dBA over 1 Hour TWA Period105 dBA over 1 Hour TWA Period

110 dBA over ½ Hour TWA Period

Noise Dose – Rule of Thumb

Any sound over 90 decibels is considered hazardous with prolonged exposure

Effect of Noise – Hearing Loss

Major harmful effect of noise is Hearing Loss

It is called Noise-induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)

Hearing loss is partial inability to hear

Deafness is total inability to hear

 It is Preventable

“PARTIAL” --- “TOTAL”

How Noise Affects the Ear

Noise-induced Hearing Loss

Hearing Loss Symptoms

Difficulty in understanding what people are saying

Listening to the television or radio at higher volume than inthe past

Ringing, Roaring, Hissing, or Buzzing in the ear (tinnitus)

 Ear pain, Itching, or Irritation

Prevention of Noise-induced Hearing Loss

 Major Prevention is Ear Protection

Use - Earplugs and Earmuffs (@ Noise level > 85db)

– (Earplugs and earmuffs can provide the wearer with at least 5 to 10 dB of attenuation)

 Obey Safety Signs

Prevention of Noise-induced Hearing Loss

 Maintain moderate sound level

Avoid exposure to sounds of high intensities Avoid exposure to sounds of high intensities

 Parties, Bars, e.t.c

Last Words…

The functionality of our hearing contributes alot to our dailyendeavours. Verbal Communication is inevitable

Having heard this information about Noise Concept and itseffect on our hearing, hearing impairment should beprevented at all times.

 If exposure is not avoidable,
