Saturday Night Mass Survey This weekend we will take a preference poll bal-lot regarding the time for the Saturday weekend Mass. This is a follow-up to the fact that a number of people expressed great favor for the Saturday evening Mass being at 4:00, following our Confirmation Mass at 4:00 on a Saturday afternoon earlier in the spring. If you do not go on Saturday night, we ask that you not fill out the survey; unless this time adjustment will cause you to change your Mass attendance.

Thank You . . . Dear Prayer Shall Ministry, Thank you so much for the hand knitted cardi-nal. It is beautiful and very generous of you all to do these for us graduates, we appreciate them a lot. I will be taking mine to Coe College next year to keep me company. Thank you! Matt Thoma Thank you to all the ladies of Sacred Heart Catholic Church Prayer Shawl Ministry for all their prayers and beautiful prayer shawl. God Bless you all, Glorian Maki

Chicago Cubs Trip 2012 On June 14th, a full bus load of baseball fans attended the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers baseball game at Wrigley Field. This is the 2nd year of a KC coordinated trip to Wrig-ley and we really appreciate the support, fun and camarade-rie of everyone who at-tended. On the trip over to Chicago, the riders enjoyed some rest and several games of bingo with great baseball re-lated prizes. A few people came up from Ottumwa to meet us and join the game… they will be back next year with many of their friends. Thank you for your help and support with the great day of baseball at historic Wrigley Field.

Catholic Young Adult Network Catholic Young Adult Network is a new collaboration of leaders throughout the Diocese of Davenport working to provide opportunities for young adults (ages 18-39) to know, love, and serve God. Religious freedom is a hallmark of our democracy, and is being threatened at this point in history by the administration’s requirement that religious institutions pay for events in-flicted upon human beings which it finds mor-ally offensive. The government is way out of bounds in telling the church how to be church. That is an infringement on the right of the church to freely practice the tenants of its faith. On Tuesday July 3, the parish will celebrate Mass for the intention of religious freedom at 6:30 p.m. You are invited to attend.

Mass for Religious Freedom Tuesday, July 3rd

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty

    O God our Creator,

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,

you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,

bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel

    to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us

in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.

Give us the strength of mind and heart

    to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;

give us courage in making our voices heard

on behalf of the rights of your Church

and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,

a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters

    gathered in your Church

in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,

so that, with every trial withstood

    and every danger overcome—

for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,

and all who come after us—

this great land will always be "one nation, under God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

    The Library’s Latest

Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s col-umn of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items in the library. The parish library has some books and many DVDs in Spanish for both children and adults. The librarian is available after both weekend Masses to gladly assist you in selecting some. Are you fascinated by the marvels of the glorious Gothic cathedrals of Europe, most built over a 1000 years ago? The DVD, Building the Great Cathedrals, is a com-prehensive tour explaining the design and construction of one of the major cathedrals. Here we see how architects in the Middle Ages incorporated designs of ancient Rome with new inventions, such as clear and stained glass and flying buttresses. Today, these cathedrals still achieve their builders’ purpose: to give honor and glory to God. The Library is open after weekend Masses or by appointment. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

July 1, 2012 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

    Wis 1:13–15; 2:23–24 / 2 Cor 8:7, 9, 13–15 Mk 5:21–43 or 5:21–24, 35b–43

It’s said that a woman often marries someone like her father. It appears I married someone who resembles my mother. They’re both warm and generous—and seri-ously directionally challenged. If not for online maps and GPS technology, neither would get to their destinations. My assessment is that both are beyond hope and help when it comes to improving their navigational skills. Two of the people in today’s Gospel are also beyond hope and beyond help, but in much more dramatic ways. The woman who touches Jesus’ cloak has hemorrhaged for twelve years. She’s not only physically ill, she’s also considered ritually unclean and a societal outcast. Jairus’s daughter deteriorates from serious illness to death, and the crowds vocally discourage Jairus from bothering Jesus anymore. Both individuals appear to be too far gone to be helped. Yet that’s exactly where Jesus’ healing touch is found— where hope is lost and help is exhausted. The woman reaches out and finds healing; Jesus brings new life to Jairus’s daughter. Certainly we know the experience of feeling beyond help. Whether it’s a physical illness, battles with depression, patterns of sinful behavior we struggle to shake, or feelings of being unloved —at times many of us feel that human intervention can’t reach us. But Jesus isn’t afraid of those dark places, and that’s exactly where he reaches out to touch us with his gentle healing. Jesus may be unable to fix the navigational challenges of my family members, but in our true places of pain, he couldn’t be closer

dear Padre How can I feel God at Mass?

Our new pastor sings the whole Mass. Lately when I hear a Mass I can’t feel the presence of God. When I’m pray-ing, my heart is spiritually empty. Please help me feel the love of God at Mass again.

Alex Dear Alex, I am impressed by your pastor. It’s not easy to learn to sing the priest’s parts of the Mass and to sing them well. Many parishes would love a singing pastor, but you have your inclinations and preferences. Two thoughts may help. One, the Mass is public worship, and assisting at Mass is joining oneself to a crowd or community. And this is God’s command-ment—that a people will worship him. The command of God is directed to individuals only as they make up the group or community. This is why God had Moses lead his people into the desert: to worship him. Two, there are all sorts of folks at Sunday Mass. It takes a lot of learning to appreciate all of them. This is why love of other people is a keeping of all the com-mandments. This crowd is the Body of Christ, the Catho-lic Church in this particular place. And Jesus Christ loves this crowd as his own body; indeed it is his Mystical Body. You have a place in it. And you have the challenge of loving it as Jesus does his own flesh and blood. But who doesn’t also love a quiet Mass, where the only music is silence and soft speech? Weekday Masses are often like this. They are there for you.
