We the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We will encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We will celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We will gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Diocesan Pastoral Council The Grinnell deanery is being asked by Bishop Amos to have two representatives on our Diocesan Pastoral Council. One person would serve a three year term and one would serve a two year term. The Pas-toral Council is an advisory body to the Bishop. It is the responsibility of the Pastoral Council ―to investi-gate under the authority of the diocesan Bishop all those things which pertain to pastoral works, to pon-der them and to propose practical conclusions about them‖ so as to promote conformity of the life and ac-tions of the People of God with the Gospel. (Canon 511) The Pastoral Council assists the Bishop and the rest of the diocese in their efforts of evangelization by planning, overseeing, and evaluating these efforts. The Council, while not replacing any legitimately and/or juridically existing office, group or other council in the diocese, is advisory to the Bishop, is representative of the entire diocese, and serves at the will of the Bishop.‖ ―The Pastoral Council is to be convoked by the diocesan Bishop at least once a year. (Canon 514) It pertains exclusively to the diocesan Bishop to con-voke more frequent and even special meetings.‖ If you would consider this ministry to our dio-cese, please contact the Parish Office. More informa-tion can also be found on our diocesan website, (www.davenportdiocese.org) in the Priest's Handbook of Policies and Procedures under the chapter entitled, ―Constitution of the Diocesan Pastoral Council.‖

National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Seais May 22
WASHINGTON (May 13, 2011)—The National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Sea is May 22. The day is observed in conjunction with National Maritime Day in the United States of America, which has been celebrated since 1933 to honor those who serve as merchant mariners and to recognize the bene-fits of the maritime industry. A Mass in observance of Maritime Day will be celebrated Sunday, May 22, at 10:00 a.m., at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in the Crypt Church. The Mass is spon-sored by the Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) national office and the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Bishop Joseph Estabrook of the Archdiocese for the Military Services USA will be the main celebrant and homilist.
Bishop J. Kevin Boland of Savannah, Georgia and AOS Promoter, encouraged dioceses to mark the national day by remembering the men and women of the sea in the Sunday homilies on May 22, and by including special peti-tions in the Prayer of the Faithful during Mass. When Mass is celebrated on a day other than Sunday the text for the Votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Star of the Sea is encouraged.
―In a special way this year, let us remember those who lost their lives at sea, those who perished in the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the families left behind,‖ Bishop Boland said.
Ninety percent of the world’s goods are transported by sea and the waterways. There are approximately 1.2 million seafarers worldwide in 10,000 commercial ships and maritime vessels. Apostleship of the Sea is a worldwide Catholic maritime ministry for the spiritual and practical assistance to seafarers, fishermen, their families and all those who work and travel by sea and the waterways. In the USA, AOS chaplains, associates and volunteers carry on this ministry in 62 maritime ports representing 50 dioceses.

Seeking Volunteers for Haven of Hope
Approximately three years ago Haven of Hope, a church sponsored, non-profit home, opened its doors to receive families and individuals who were in need of short-term emergency shel-ter. The Haven of Hope’s doors con-tinue to be open thanks to support from local churches, agencies, businesses, and individuals who are dedicated to support-ing people who are facing adversity. The length of stay is one to three days and is for single families or for one to three individuals at a time. The house is furnished and is equipped with a mod-ern kitchen, laundry, and a handicapped accessible ramp. Referrals are provided by the Salvation Army. Volunteers do all the work in preparation during and after a respite stay. The board of directors is seeking churches and individuals to become in-volved with Haven of Hope to support and expand existing services. Sacred Heart Parish is going to take a turn hosting the Haven of Hope home here in Newton for a month or two beginning this summer. It is an ex-citing opportunity to help our brothers and sisters in need of short term emer-gency shelter. The Social Action Com-mission is looking for volunteers with an interest in this area. If you can help, call Kathy Hammerly at 641 792 2050.

Labels for education.
CLIP. EARN. HELP THEM LEARN.
Are you looking for a project to do as a family? This is the perfect ministry for you! We are saving Campbell's labels for All Saints Catholic School in Davenport. There is a detailed list of products on the bulletin board in McCann Center or go online to labels for education par-ticipating products. Then when you go to the store have the kids help you 'hunt' for the
products that are on the list that you normally get. When you use the products have Mom or Dad cut the label off the product and have the child cut the upc code off or have them put the whole label in an envelope or bag-gie. Then when you come to Church put the labels in the box that is located on the glass table in McCann. They in turn use these labels to order products for their school like, playground equipment, art supplies, or class-room supplies. I have put in a request to have them let us know what kind of fun stuff they are getting for their school.
Some of examples of items to save are; Campbell’s Soup at Hand, Chunky Soups, Select Harvest Soups, Spaghettio’s, V-8 (Regular, Splash, Fusion), Pepperidge Farm Products, Gold Fish, Prego Spaghetti Sauce, Campbell’s Supper Bakes, and Swanson Broth. If you are unsure on what the UPC code is, just take off the whole label and we can trim off the part that is needed. Thanks for your help!

Acts 6:1-7 / 1 Pt 2:4-9 / Jn 14:1-12
While working as a parish pastoral associate, I guided grieving families through the emotional process of planning funerals for their loved ones, including selecting readings for the funeral Mass. Today’s Gospel reading, particularly the first six verses, was the passage they chose most often. Jesus’ words about going to prepare a place for us can be incredibly comforting to those mourning the lost of a spouse, child, or parent. In fact, Jesus intended them to soothe the anxious hearts of his disciples prior to his own death and departure form them. Our ongoing celebration of the Easter season reminds us to treasure this gift of eternal life — a place pre-pared especially for us — that Jesus promised through his resurrection. Yet if God has prepared a place for us, have we prepared a place for God within ourselves? Today’s sec-ond reading from 1 Peter challenges us to think of ourselves as ―living stones‖ being built into a ―spiritual house.‖ I find that to be a striking image — to be living stones used to build a home for God. We’ve heard the Scripture passage about our bodies being ―temples of the Holy Spirit‖ (1 Corinthians 6:19), but do we really believe that to be true? Are we making daily choices that enable God to live within us? When we choose openness to others’ needs, when we choose forgiveness instead of fostering resentment, and when we choose honesty and integrity instead of taking advantage of others, it’s as if we’re putting mortar between the living stones of God’s home within us. We’re steadily building that spiritual home in our hearts where God can dwell. How better to appreciate God’s gift of eternal life, prepared especially for us, than to wel-come God into this life, into our very hearts?

Why “Spirit” instead of “Ghost”?
When and why did the Church start using “Holy Spirit” instead of “Holy Ghost”? Paula
Dear Paula, There is no magic date for a wholesale switch between ―Holy Spirit‖ and ―Holy Ghost,‖ but the ten-dency to refer to the third person of the Holy Trinity as the ―Holy Spirit‖ was strongly affected by the official translation of the sacred liturgy into English during and after Vatican II. The International commission on English in the Liturgy was set up in 1963 to guide the translation of our ritual prayers from the official Latin into English, and their option for spirit over ghost has shaped our official prayer ever since. The terms were also affected by the shift from older English translations of the Scriptures to more recent English translations like the New American Bible where, as in the liturgy, ―Holy Spirit‖ was adopted as the more standard translation of Greek and Hebrew terms. Over time, in common English usage ghost has moved form meaning ―the living essence of a person‖ to having a greater association with the dead and the paranormal, so the changes to the official translation were beneficial from a cultural as well as a linguistic standpoint.
